3 March 2000 No. 5From the acting Head of Junior SchoolThe Year Four Parent function last evening was well attended and I would like to thank parents for supporting this important and worthwhile social event. May I also take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Scotch Family for the many kind wishes and thoughts that have been conveyed to my wife and myself on the birth of our son, Brent. We have been overwhelmed by the interest and loving support that parents and boys in the Junior School have provided for us; thank you sincerely. This week our theme has been "Helpfulness". At Monday's Assembly I discussed with Years 3-6 what helpfulness is and how the boys can be of service to others and themselves. We talked about different ways in which we can help one another, such as physical help and also helping others through understanding and appreciation. I concluded this Assembly with the following affirmation....... I am helpful. I will look for ways to be of service. I will offer help that people really need. I ask God to show me how. I can serve others and myself today. The Bible also reminds us... "Whenever you possibly can, do good to those who need it. Never tell your neighbour to wait until tomorrow if you can help him now." (Proverbs 3: 27-28) Rodney T CarsonJunior School Parents AssociationEach year, in carrying out our fund raising role, the JSPA holds raffles and the like at school functions. It would be a tremendous help to us if you or your business could donate items or services that would be suitable to raffle. Local businesses, while generous, are becoming a little tired of being approached by us, not to mention by every other school in the area, so help from our own parents would be wonderful. Your donation would be acknowledged at and before the function, or could remain anonymous if you preferred. We are particularly keen to obtain gifts that we can sell at the Mothers' Day Stall in early May. These would be items that the boys would buy for between $1-$5 and would be suitable as gifts for their mothers. Even if we could purchase items wholesale from your business we would be very grateful. If you can help us, please contact me on 9819 1870. I know many of you are looking for ways to support the school and I look forward to hearing from you.

Lost ClothingA number of parents have approached me in regard to lost items of school clothing, particularly sports clothes. Whilst it is incumbent on the boys to be responsible for their own belongings, things sometimes do go missing and obviously need to be found. To avoid confusion and loss, the naming of all personal belongings is essential in a school setting. Many of the items reported to me as being lost are named and therefore should be easy to identify and to return to the owner. As the lost items are not in the Lost Property basket at the foot of the Resource Centre, it would seem that some boys have in their possession items of clothing which are not theirs. Would all parents please check their son's clothing this weekend and ensure, firstly, that they are his clothes; and, secondly, that his own items of clothing are clearly named. Thank you,
Chris Robertson
SportWe wish Andrew Hardeman (6W) well as he competes in the Victorian Tennis Championships in Bendigo over the weekend. Andrew had previously won the APS singles championships. Last reminder for any boys who wish to get a mouthguard fitted. Forms must be in by Monday.

Year 6 Excursion to the Art GalleryIt was a cloudy, but hot day on Friday 25 February. The Year Sixes were excited about their excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria on Russell Street. This gallery is next to the State Library and is temporary until the renovations in St Kilda Road have finished. The main purpose of going to the gallery was for our art assignment, which is about an artist and one of their works that was in the gallery. We had to buy a postcard of the painting that we chose to research and then bring it back home to write the assignment about the artist. At the gallery we were given a guided tour around part of the building with a professional gallery guide. The tour which lasted for an interesting hour and a quarter was about famous paintings such as The Pioneer (by Frederick McCubbin) and Shearing the Rams (by Tom Roberts). We discussed the textures of the paintings and the history of the artist. There were also many famous paintings by the Heidelberg School of Artists, especially the 9 inches by 5 inches exhibition. The gallery also had overseas paintings that were donated and collected from other galleries. Some are priceless and worth many millions of dollars. The Weeping Woman by Pablo Picasso was worth 7 million Australian dollars. It has been a famous painting in the gallery for a very long period of time. Phar Lap was also seen in the gallery and Ms Pride was just so happy! She has admired Phar Lap since she was a little girl - so lucky her! The stuffed horse was donated to the Museum and is now priceless. We were told that if there was a fire in the gallery, the staff would try to save Phar Lap first and then try to save the other paintings! All the students and teachers enjoyed the trip to the Gallery.
