From the Head of Junior School

Parents will be aware that last week I visited the King's School in Auckland. It was fortuitous that, from the Headmaster's office, we were able to view Team New Zealand being escorted back into the Viaduct by a flotilla of hundreds of boats, after their convincing victory over Prada in the America's Cup. It was strange that New Zealand colleagues did not want to talk about cricket, rugby or netball.

Whilst I am still taking in the many different facets of my visit, exchanges such as these provide a wonderful opportunity to share ideas, to discover fresh ideas for implementation and, more often than not, simply reinforce that what is happening in your own school are valued practices. Whilst there are many similarities between our two schools, there are also many differences and it is on these that I will be reflecting over the next few weeks.

Today Year Four returned from their annual camp and, on all accounts, a terrific time was had by all. Stay tuned for reports over the next couple of weeks. Year Five head off to Camp Kangaroobie next Tuesday and I look forward to my overnight visit on Wednesday. Best wishes to our Year Five campers as they make their final preparations.

ATTENTION all dads and special males in the lives of our boys!! Make a note in your diary for the evening of 4 May 2000. Paul Reiffel, Captain of Victoria and member of the Australian World Cup champion cricket team, will be joining us for a casual get together in the Cardinal Pavilion. More details will be available later, but put this in your diary now!

My theme for this week has been Kindness.

Boys were reminded that practising Kindness includes, noticing when someone or something needs care; thinking of things that would make others happy; practising habits that help the environment; resisting the temptation to be cruel to others or animals; accepting that we are all different and all special; and, remembering your connection to all of God's creation.

Our weekly quote from the Bible was...

"So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Be tolerant with one another and forgive any of you who has a complaint against someone else."
(Colossians 3:12)

My thought for the week...

The kindness you spread today will be returned to you tomorrow.

Junior School Parents Association

This week has seen the last of the year level cocktail parties and I would like to once again thank all the class reps who were involved in collecting the RSVPs, ringing around to all the parents, preparing name tags and generally being welcoming on the night. I hope those of you who attended enjoyed yourselves. Our caterers were a little thwarted by the high number of late RSVPs, but did their best. Our thanks also to the teaching staff who attended.

Later this term you will be receiving hot cross bun samples to tempt you to order for Easter, so keep an eye out for these in the school bags. And not long after, invitations to the Mothers' Day Lunch (12 May) will appear. We also still have a few spots in the Mothers' Choir, so please call if you're interested.

My thanks to parents who have already responded to my request last week for donations for raffles etc. and items for the Mothers' Day Stall. Your generosity is much appreciated, and adds to the sense of community within the parent body.
