24 March 2000 No. 8From the Head of Junior SchoolAt Monday's Assembly, we were pleased to welcome the Principal, Dr Donaldson, and the Senior School Captain, Tom Cade. Dr Donaldson and Tom presented the badges of Office to our to our new school leaders whose names appeared in the Newsletter last week. Tom spoke to the Assembly and stressed to the boys that whilst the official leaders of the school wore badges, they are no more important than any other member of the school, they simply have the important job of being there to help others. This has been an underlying theme for the week and all boys have been encouraged to think about the way in which they can make the most of opportunities presented to them. The Bible speaks many times of leadership and in Luke's Gospel we are reminded, '..The greatest one among you must be like the youngest, and the leader must be like the servant.' (Luke 22:26) I wish all leaders well for their duties throughout 2000, and I also look forward to witnessing leadership from all boys. My thought for the week... 'A good leader inspires people to have confidence in him/her; a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves.' Guy B Mason Junior PrimaryOur Prep to Year Three Easter Chapel Service will be held next Thursday, 30 March at 2.15 pm in the Littlejohn Chapel. We look forward to as many family and friends as possible being there to mark this very special event. This will be the last Prep to Year Three Chapel for Year Three boys, as next term they will take part in the Senior Primary Chapel Services. I still have a bag full of clothing worn by some boys in last year's Christmas Service. If you are missing winter hats, gloves, scarves, etc, then I may have them. With Winter on its way, you may appreciate some extra warmth. Please send your son to see me if he hasn't yet brought home any of the items listed above.

Art NewsIn Art lessons over the past few weeks, boys in Year 6 have been mastering the skill of printing using lino cuts. They have used the class topic of 'Natural Disasters' as their theme for the lino cuts. This is quite a complicated process and the boys have mastered it very well. A display of the some of excellent lino cut prints completed by the boys is presently in the School Foyer. To remember the 'Nine by Five' exhibition by the Heidelberg School Artists in Melbourne in 1898, Year 6 boys have also painted on small canvas boards that are nine inches by five inches. The Heidelberg School artists used the lids of wooden cigar boxes to paint upon and these lids measured nine by five inches. If any parents or grandparents would like to donate a wooden cigar box to the Art room it would be a wonderful teaching aid for this topic. The box does not have to be 9 x 5. A display of the mounted paintings 9 x 5 is in the Art room at present. I am collecting small boxes, cardboard cylinders and margarine containers at present. Thank you to all parents who collect items for the Art Room. Susan Ferres Head of Junior School Art Social ServiceNext Thursday 30 March will be the Easter Chapel Services for the Junior School. Years Four to Six will have their Service in the morning and the Years Prep to Three Service will be held in the afternoon. At the beginning and end of these services, two boys will be at the entrance of the Chapel with collection baskets. Families are encouraged to place money into the basket, and this money will be donated to the Royal Children's Hospital Easter Appeal. If you are unable to attend either of the Chapel Services, but however would still like to donate money, please send it with your son next Thursday in a sealed envelope stating on the front: Royal Children's Hospital Easter Appeal. He can give it to his class teacher, who will then pass it onto me. Please consider donating to this very worthwhile cause to assist with the continuation of the excellent services which are available to our children. Emily Taylor Social Service Coordinator Olympics 2000Recently a working committee was established amongst the staff to plan and implement whole school activities involving the Olympics during the last three weeks of Term three. A component of the plan is to invite individuals, groups or organisations to speak, demonstrate or run workshops with the boys on their area of expertise during Second and/or Third Term. This might include a past (or current) athlete, coach, historian, collector and so on. The committee would like to extend their search further into the community by asking parents if they have any contacts who could possibly speak and eventually organise a visit to the school. If you do know of someone who we could contact would you please speak to Mr. Brian Sampson (Director of Studies) or Cheryl McBride (Year Two teacher). Your help will be greatly appreciated and will ultimately enhance the learning of every boy in the school.
