31 March 2000 No. 9From the Head of Junior SchoolIt is hard to believe that next week sees the conclusion to Term One and this highlights the busy nature of the school. I commend all boys on a positive start to the year and I trust that each one can sit back and feel confident that he has given his all in everything attempted. I keep reiterating to the boys that we encourage them to do their best, as they should accept no less and we, as parents and teachers, should expect no more. With this in mind I am confident each boy will enjoy success at his own level, throughout the rest of the year. Three members of staff have been busily working with state and national bodies lately and this involvement enables Scotch to keep up to date with latest trends in curriculum. Mr Walker currently sits on the National Science Accreditation Committee; Mr Clarke is providing advice to the Board of Studies in LOTE; and Miss Raymond consults through the Association of Independent Schools on the Early Years Literacy Program. I commend these staff, who are already extremely busy with their preparation, planning and teaching in their own classes, for taking on these noteable roles. The 'Milk for Schools Program' continues to operate in the school and I am becoming increasingly concerned at the number of full, or only partly full milk containers that are being discarded (often inappropriately!). Our bins are becoming havens for wasps who are attracted to the discarded milk (and other items) and I urge parents of boys participating in this program to discuss their son's involvement, as it would seem an enormous amount of wastage is currently occurring. I again remind boys that the stickers from the bottles should never be attached to buildings or other items of school property. Boys have already been reminded of this matter during school assemblies. My theme for this week has been 'Compassion.' Boys were encouraged that being compassionate involves noticing when someone is hurt or needs a friend; Caring enough to stop what you are doing to help someone; asking others how they are feeling; and forgiving others and yourself when mistakes are made. The Bible reminds us: 'So then, you must clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Be tolerant with one another and forgive any of you who has complaints against someone else.' ( Colossians 3: 12) This verse ties in so nicely with many of our themes throughout the year. My thought for the week:'Never be afraid to try something new.Remember...amateurs built the ark, professionals built the Titanic! Guy B Mason EnglishEach term, a third of the boys in each class from Prep to Year Six, will have a piece of writing published in the Memoirs. By the end of the year, all boys in the Junior School will have had a piece of their writing, published. I encourage all members of the Junior School Community to read this publication and enjoy the quality and variety of writing styles that are represented.
