From the Head of Junior School

Last week, all boys participated in Easter Chapel services, and whilst Easter is still two weeks away, it provided an opportunity for boys to be reminded of why Easter is celebrated by Christians. The boys were reminded that God sent His only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross in order for our sins to be forgiven and I encourage them to spend some time thinking about this over this important period.

Swimming Sports for boys in Years Three to Six have once again seen maximum participation over the past week. I congratulate every boy on 'having a go' and making every effort for both personal and team gain. Final results can be found elsewhere in this Newsletter and I extend thanks to the many parents and friends who were able to display their support for the boys by being present at each carnival.

Special congratulations and thanks are extended to Mr Hawkins, Miss Colaneri and the Junior School staff for ensuring the success of these events.

A number of small projects are due to be completed during the holidays and when boys return our Junior Primary playground should be complete. We will certainly be pleased to reclaim this space for boys in Years One and Two. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Junior School Parents' Association for their contribution to this project and the School Council for the additional funds that this project has required since its commencement.

Older boys will return to additional 'handball' courts around the playground, relieving the congestion on the available courts.

From the start of next term, the Junior School will have its own Student Representative Council (SRC), involving boys from Prep through to Year Six, enabling boys to provide 'real' feedback to the staff on issues that are important to them. Details and selections are still being finalised, with parents and boys being advised of these early next term. I look forward to this opportunity for our boys to become more involved in 'having their say.'

Some parents have expressed interest in their sons learning 'Greek' as an after school program. Any interested parent should contact Mr Sampson (Director of Studies) to determine if this program will be viable, as a minimum of ten students is required.

Attention all dads and special males in the lives of our boys! Please see the attached flier for details of a 'Dads' Night' to be held in May, where our special guest will be Paul Reifel. This will be a great opportunity for dads to come together socially. I look forward to seeing you all there!

My theme for this week has been 'Determination'.

Boys were reminded that Determination requires focus and effort on a particular task and then sticking with it until it is finished. It also requires the willpower to do something even when it is not easy, or it means caring about something so much that even when it is really hard, or you are being tested, that you still keep on going.

The Bible tells us:

'...let us run with determination the race that lies before us. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from beginning to end.' (Hebrews 12: 1-2)

My thought for the week:

One day a boy went to his athletics coach and told him of his dream to be the fastest human being on earth. His coach replied, 'It's great to have a dream, but to attain your dream you must build a ladder to it.

The ladder has four rungs.

The first rung is determination.
The second rung is dedication.
The third rung is discipline and
the fourth rung is attitude!'

The boy was Jessie Owens, who went on to win four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics!

Accompanying today's Newsletter is the Term One edition of the Junior School Memoirs.

This document is a celebration of the writing skills of Junior School boys from Prep to Year Six.

Nearly 150 Junior School authors are represented in the Term One Memoirs. By the end of the year all boys will have had a piece of their writing published.

Boys in Years Five and Six were encouraged to produce a cover design for our first edition. I thank all those boys who submitted designs and congratulate them for their creativity and effort.

The chosen design was created by Marco Parisi of 5A. It is eye catching and detailed.

I hope you all enjoy reading the Junior School Memoirs.

Art Request

Thankyou to all parents who have supported the Art program with their time and supplies over the last term, it is greatly appreciated.

Over the Easter Break, I am asking boys to collect and smooth out the coloured wrapping paper around the Easter eggs. This attractive foil has many uses in Art and I will give house points to boys who collect Easter egg wrapping paper.

I am also collecting cylinders from lunch wrap rolls, margarine containers, ice-cream containers and small boxes.

JSPA

Many thanks to all of you who have supported the JSPA functions this term: the morning teas, cocktail parties, hot cross bun purchases and Easter egg guesses. Congratulations to the winner.

Next term brings the Mothers' Day stall (11 May), Luncheon (12 May), and the lecture by Professor Michael Carr-Gregg (31 May).

We have had a wonderful response to the Mothers Day Lunch invitations - don't forget to send your RSVP or get a table together over the holidays. It will be a great day.
