12 May 2000 No. 13From the Head of Junior SchoolToday's 'Mothers' Day Luncheon' was extremely well attended and I trust that all the 'mums' who were able to share this occasion enjoyed the day. Congratulations are extended to the inaugural 'Mothers' Choir' who performed admirably in their first 'gig' at this luncheon. Stay tuned for future performance dates! On behalf of all who attended, I thank the JSPA for their outstanding organisation. Dads may have noticed there has been no report on the planned 'Dads' Night' that was scheduled last week. As only ten dads responded, I had no alternative but to cancel the night. I will push ahead with plans for a future night with the aim simply being to provide dads with an opportunity to get to know other dads in a social setting. If any dad has a great idea for a get together, then please do not hesitate to contact me. (I have already had one vote for 'Go Karting!') Next week is set to be another busy week for many boys with 'Prep Grandparents' Day' to be held on Friday and the Junior School Choir will be performing at the May Concert on Tuesday night at the Robert Blackwood Hall. The boys of Healey House will also be presenting our first House Chapel for boys in Years Three to Six on Thursday. I wish all participants well for their preparations towards these exciting activities. My theme for this week has been Loyalty. The boys were reminded that being Loyal involves; making a commitment to God, a person, a country or an ideal; being strong in what you believe in; being supportive through the good times and the bad; being loyal to your family; standing up for your friends when others are acting unjustly towards them; and that being loyal, means you are worthy of trust. The Book of Proverbs reminds us: 'Be loyal and faithful, and God will forgive your sin. Have reverence for the Lord and nothing evil will happen to you.' (Proverbs 16:6)My thought for the week: Anyone can stand by you when you are right, but afriend will stand by you even when you are wrong! I wish all mums a very Happy Mothers' Day on Sunday, and hope that you enjoy a day of being pampered by your loved ones. Boys made drawings and paintings in the art room using a wide range of mediums and they were sent to SOCOG in Sydney. All boys who participated will receive an Olympic sticker and those entered for selection will receive a certificate. The 'Welcome World' program will ensure that approximately 10,500 pieces of students' artwork will be hung in the bedrooms of the athletes in the Olympic Village. Consequently there is a strong possibility that some of the Scotch Junior School artwork will be hung. This means that some boys will receive a 'thank you' postcard from an Olympic Athlete. These postcards will be sent to the school and will be posted from the Olympic Village during the games - so we will have to look out for them in Term 4! Boys art work that has been retained by 'Share the Spirit' program are
It will be exciting if any Scotch boys receive postcards, we will just have to wait and see. Mrs Ferres Scholastic Book Fair:It's on again! We are keen to receive more responses to our Cabaret Evening. Although we're off to a promising start, we need to hear from other acts so we can start working with our accompanist and organising our schedule for the evening. If you've lost your form, telephone Janie Sinclair on 9572 5193. Gregory AlexanderDuring the week Year 4 walked down to Hawthorn Town Hall to see an illustrator named Gregory Alexander talk about his illustrations on folk tales from Africa. He told us about his travels in Kenya and folk tales he learnt while he visited the different tribes. He showed us how he gets ideas for his sketches. He used photographs, rugs, postcards, and ideas from other countries to help him with his illustrations. He also specialised in borders around his paintings. He showed us how to do three different water colour paintings with different borders. Many boys helped Greg paint the pictures that we brought back to school. He uses lovely bright colours and also he could draw African animals very well. He gave us lots of ideas which we will now use in class.
