From the Head of Junior School
Congratulations are extended to the Junior School Choir, who under the leadership of Miss Jenni Allen and Mrs Julia Piggin, performed admirably at the May Concert on Tuesday evening. The boys were fine ambassadors of our Junior School and each can feel proud of their efforts.
My thanks are also extended to the many families who were able to support not only the choir, but the various musical groups from the Senior School.
Teachers are in the process of writing Mid Year Reports and with this in mind, I remind parents that reports are collected at Parent/Teacher Interviews held towards the end of this term. Today, all boys received details of these interviews and should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the Deputy Head, Mr Rodney Carson.
The interview process is an important aspect of your son's development and I urge parents to respond to his teacher's invitation at your earliest convenience.
Yesterday, boys in Years Three to Six participated in our first House Chapel for the year. Healey House presented a meaningful service around the theme of 'Unification.' At this Chapel we welcomed Pastor Wilhem Stern from a local Lutheran Church, who officiated in conjunction with Reverend Bradbeer. Congratulations are extended to Mr Irvine and the boys of Healey for a wonderful start to our day.
Today was Grandparents' day for the boys in Prep. Once again a wonderful turn out of Grandparents and special friends enabled the Prep boys to share this important day in their first year, with very important members of their own family. I trust all visitors enjoyed themselves as much as we enjoyed sharing the day with them.
My theme for this week has been 'Assertiveness'. Boys were reminded that being assertive involves: recognising that God created each one of us as special and unique; sharing your unique point of view, feelings and gifts/talents with others, but not necessarily meaning you get your own way; telling people what is true for you when asked for your opinion; refusing to react to others without thinking how you really think about things first; saying 'no' to things that make you feel uneasy, that may hurt or get you into trouble; to seek help when you need it; and to keep from bullying others to make yourself feel important.
The Bible reminds us that each one of us is extremely important to God, as he made each one of us to be special in our own way. Luke's Gospel (12:6 - 7) tells us:
'Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs on your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more
than many sparrows.'
My thought for the week:
There are two types of people who will tell you that you cannot make a difference in this world: Those who are afraid to try themselves, and those who are afraid you will succeed.

Bike Education
The Department of Education Employment and Training have held a Bike Education training course at Scotch College Junior School on Thursday and Friday of this week. A number of people from all over Melbourne have attended this course. We have been fortunate enough to have three parents trained. They have participated in the sessions and have kindly offered to be trained as Bike Education Instructors. Wendy Dawson (Luke 4L), Bronwyn Peters (James 3N) and Stephen Grover (Hugh 4W) have successfully trained and will now assist the Year 4 classes in our Bike Education programme which occurs in Term 4. We appreciate their efforts, just like we appreciate the many parents over the years who have successfully trained and then assist with the worthwhile bike sessions and road safety skills that are held in Term 4.
