From the Head of Junior School

Our week commenced with a special assembly where we heard from the Year Six and Year Seven Brass Ensembles. This was a wonderful way to start our week and it is encouraging to see our young musicians developing so confidently. It was especially pleasing to note the many past Junior School boys representing Year Seven!

Robyn Stephens was also our guest speaker at this assembly. The Junior School sponsors Robyn, who is a Paralympian representing our great country in Goalball. Goalball is played by people with impaired vision and Robyn provided an overview of the game and some interesting anecdotes from her travels around the world. This will be Robyn's fourth Paralympics and we wish her well for her final preparations. We hope that Robyn will be able to visit again before the Olympics.

Parent/Teacher Interviews are scheduled for next week and I encourage parents to be prompt in attending their allocated time. These evenings are a busy time for teachers and keeping to the allotted schedule is extremely important. In order that the necessary feedback is received, parents requiring additional time are welcome to arrange this directly with their son's teacher.

On Wednesday of next week we will welcome students from the United States at a special assembly. These students are being billeted by families from the Senior School and will share a presentation with our boys. Stay tuned for a report next week!

I trust families will enjoy our extended weekend break and I look forward to seeing all boys back at school next Tuesday.

We have not had a theme for this week, however, following my theme and poem from last week, I will leave you with the following as my thought for this week....

If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn;
If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight;
If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy;
If a child lives with shame, he learns to feel guilty;
If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient;
If a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence;
If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate;
If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice;
If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith;
If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself;
If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns
to find love in the world.

Centennial Banner for the Junior School

Boys from Years Three to Six have been working in the Art Room in small groups to create a large banner which depicts a 100 years of the Scotch College Junior School. The banner is for an International Children's festival to be held at Warrnambool during the next school holidays from 25 June to 2 July 2000. Schools and children all over Australia have been invited to draw artistically the centennial of their school or local area and to present this in a banner. Banners are then to travel to International Children's festivals in Seattle, Vancouver and Edinburgh in 2001.

Our banner shows the Junior School buildings at Eastern Melbourne in 1901, Glen House, the mansion on the hill in Hawthorn in 1916, the modern school building of today and the Chapel among the trees. There are the Yarra River and Gardners Creek and Glenferrie Road and the railway line framing the buildings and the green ovals of the school. The boys have painted old fashioned coaches and horses, modern trains, trams and cars, lots of Scotch boys playing a variety of sports, and boys playing instruments. Some of the school buildings will be 'open' to show the 'chalk and talk' teaching, as well as computers and modern teaching methods. We hope that the banner will showcase the history of our school, as well as create an artistically pleasing banner of which we can all be proud.

Mrs Keating and Mrs Ferres have been instrumental in planning and organising the banner. We hope to display photos of the completed banner in the school foyer in the near future.

Mrs Ferres - Head of Art and Craft

Red Clothes Day

On Tuesday, 20 June the Junior School is having a Red Clothes Day to raise money for the Red Nose Day. Everyone is encouraged to wear something red and bring a gold coin donation. As part of this activity a variety of Red Nose Memorabilia will be available for sale during this week. There will be badges, pens and noses, plus many other things for sale. I encourage you to assist your sons in supporting this very worthwhile and important organisation.
