From the Head of Junior School

'A Scotch guard against dangers of drugs, alcohol'

(The Age, 12 June 2000)

This head-line was used on Monday when it was announced that the Principal of Scotch College, Dr Gordon Donaldson, was awarded the Order of Australia for his contribution to education and his efforts in the promotion of drug and alcohol awareness in the wider community.

I know the whole Junior School community joins me in congratulating Dr Donaldson on this highly appropriate honour.

This week has seen the commencement of our Parent/Teacher Interview programme and I trust that parents have found these sessions of value. The staff spend many hours behind the scenes, on top of their normal duties, preparing reports, portfolios and feedback for boys and parents and I sincerely thank each one of them for the professional way in which they perform these important roles.

Should parents feel additional time is required with a particular teacher, then please feel free to contact the Junior School Office in order to arrange a mutually convenient interview time.

Our Year Three boys travelled to a Nursing Home in Bayswater yesterday, where they presented their German Concert. Every boy was a fine ambassador of the school and can feel justifiably proud of their performance! Well done, Year Three.

Special thanks are also extended to Mrs Nash, Mrs Taylor, Mr Clarke, Miss Allen, Mrs Piggin, Mrs Richardson and Mr Ferguson for their efforts on the day!

Year Five and Six boys are in their final preparations for their mid year concert next Thursday and I wish all boys well for their final preparations.

Congratulations to Mrs Robertson, the staff and boys of the Junior Primary on a wonderful Chapel yesterday afternoon. With the theme 'Our World - God's World', many parents and friends shared this special service of worship.

I once again seek the cooperation of parents by asking that boys not be dropped off in the Boarding House precinct. This is a private area for the Boarders and under no circumstances should parents or carers be entering this part of the school in a vehicle. Your assistance is appreciated in this important matter.

Due to the short week, we have not had a theme, but I leave you with the following as my thought for the week….

There are no such words as 'coulda', 'shoulda', or 'woulda'.

If you shoulda and coulda, you woulda!

From the Resource Centre

A number of Year Six boys have recently participated in the Primary Research Project. This Australia wide project requires students to find answers to questions from a number of categories. This year the categories were Language, Continents, Olympic Games, Communications, Children's Literature, Money, Federation and the Solar System.

Boys were allowed to use any materials they needed from the Resource Centre to answer the questions. These included books, CD Roms and the Internet.

The challenges were to interpret the question carefully and then to decide which resource would be best used to answer the question. All boys worked independently. They showed great perseverance and determination and are to be congratulated for their fine efforts.
