23 June 2000 No. 19From the Head of Junior SchoolLast Friday saw the running of our Years Three to Six Cross Country and I congratulate all boys on competing to the best of their ability. I was particularly delighted to see the many displays of sportsmanship, especially being extended to boys who finished well behind the main field. Encouragement and enthusiastic support, regardless of House membership, was evident throughout the afternoon and I was extremely proud to have observed this personally. Well done, Scotch! Results of this competition were announced at this morning's Assembly and can be found attached to this Newsletter. Yesterday, media identity Tim Lane spoke to the boys in Years Three to Six as a part of our pre Olympic studies. All boys enjoyed hearing Tim's anecdotes and this provided a wonderful way to conclude our week. Years Five and Six presented a wonderful concert yesterday afternoon, which culminated in a massed choir of all boys. I am always so impressed with the quality of items presented and I extend congratulations to all performers and the many staff involved in the preparation of the boys. These concerts always form a memorable part of our school year. A special effort was extended throughout the week in the raising of funds for 'Sudden Infant Death Syndrome' (SIDS) via the sale of Red Nose items. I sincerely thank the boys for their generosity and am pleased to announce that over one thousand dollars ($1000.00!!) was raised for this very worthy cause. Thank you, Scotch!! Last Friday evening saw the Club 150 'Kick Off Ball' at the Grand Hyatt. The Junior School was well represented by many parents and I trust all in attendance enjoyed the night as much as my wife and I did! (Who else is now sick of 'Smarties'?) Parents are still able to join 'Club 150' and application forms can be collected from either myself or the Development Office. My theme for the week has been 'Enthusiasm' and much enthusiasm has been displayed across so many activities throughout the term. I reminded boys that being enthusiastic involves: giving 100% to everything undertaken; thinking positively; smiling and laughing whilst you are having a good time; thinking of imaginative ways of doing dull jobs; and, doing something just to serve God. I hope all boys will enthusiastically enjoy their holidays and I trust all will return refreshed for the start of the second half of the year. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Stephanie Shield who has been working in our Office during Mrs Armstrong's absence. Miss Shield has made a wonderful impact on the Junior School in a very short time, and we all wish her well as she commences her travels around Australia! Thank you, Stephanie! My thought for the week comes from children writing enthusiastic letters to God.... Dear God, Guy B Mason Misprint in Last Friday's NewsletterThe Year Six lunch is on Wednesday 19 July. It will be held at Heide Museum of Modern Art, with the optional extra of a guided tour through the Jeffrey Smart exhibition. More information next term. Jan Goldsmith Club 150 BallI hope all who attended the Club 150 'Kick Off Ball' last Friday night had a wonderful time. Next term offers more excitement. Fathers Day Breakfasts on 30 and 31 August and 1 September are other dates for the diary. Have a relaxing holiday, and thank you for your support this term. Susan Hughes - President of Junior School Parent Association From the Music DepartmentThe Scotch College Junior School Occasional Choir will be rehearsing and performing during Third Term. This is a non auditioned choir for boys in Years Four to Six who are not currently in the Junior School Choir. Rehearsals will take place in the Junior School Assembly Hall on Wednesday afternoons from 3.30pm to 4.15pm during Term Three. Any interested boys who have not received a notice should contact Miss Allen as soon as possible. Jenni Allen - Head of Music Attention All Grade 5 ParentsWe will be having a dinner on the evening of Saturday 29th July 2000. Please mark this date in your diary. Further information will be forwarded in the first week of Term 3. Sports NewsletterFootballAndrew Murdoch - The 6A Football Team completed a season of mixed results. During the brief season, the boys worked hard to develop their kicking, marking and handball skills, and began to demonstrate sound team play by the final game. The 6A's unfortunately lost to stronger Grimwade and Burke Hall teams, but recorded good wins against Brighton Grammar and Carey. Rodney Carson - The Year 6B Football Team finished the season on a positive note with a solid win over Burke Hall. It was pleasing to see the boys showing more desire to get their hands on the football as the year progressed. Consistent players throughout the season were Paul Silver, Alastair Gurney, Christian Toll and Oliver Thomas. Gary Irvine - The 5A Football Team had a short but exciting season, winning all their games but one. The main game against Grimwade proved to be a tight physical contest with Scotch just edging out Grimwade by the final siren. All boys improved in their endeavour at the ball and the team started to play a quick running brand of football that will be continued next year when they play on the MCG against Grimwade. Matthew Dickinson - The 5B Football Team had a mixed season winning two of their four games. After two standout games Will Dungey was promoted to the A's. In return, we gained valuable size and strength from those boys who joined us from the A's during the season. Other noteworthy players for the B's were Oliver Kerr, Robert D'Agostino and Jordan Crawford, who was the most improved player. NetballJocelyn Pride - A gallant squad of boys persevered each week to improve their skills and to learn the game of netball. Teamwork was evident in every match, and despite some big losses to far more experienced sides, the boys maintained tremendous enthusiasm and put 100% effort into every game. We struggled to find consistent form in the goal circle, however congratulations to Gordon Koh who emerged as a very handy goal scorer. Andrew Fairservice kept the team's spirits high and skillful play from John Kafkas, Finlay Newnham, David Speight and Charlie Morshead steered the team in a positive direction. As the season went on, improved performances from Peter Chandler, Stuart Thomas, Campbell Phillips and William Li added to lifting the standard of the team. Above all the boys enjoyed the high participation rate of this fast moving sport and developed excellent skills that will transfer into other ball sports. Dean Gregory - Year Five Netball has been an outstanding success during the Term Two season. All boys have improved their fitness levels, skill levels and knowledge of the game. The team was undefeated for the season. All players contributed during each game with special mentions to Andrew Rawlin, Derrick Tsang, Justin Sloane, Josh Bonney, Ned McNeice and Harrison Wilcox for their frequent games of outstanding quality. Cross CountryPeter Hawkins - Congratulations to Jad Hamzi (57th), John Fingleton (67th), Angus Brougham (4th) and William Lockwood (29th) on their efforts at the Victorian Cross Country Championships. Angus has been selected to represent Victoria in the National Championships in August - a fantastic achievement. Several Junior School boys competed with the Senior School Cross Country squad at the Victorian Cross Country Championships at Bundoora Park on Saturday. Angus Brougham (50th), William Lockwood (53rd), Andrew Earle (66th) and William Marshall (76th) all ran very strongly in the large field of over 150 runners, even though they were much younger than most competitors. Term Two provided some very close racing and some pleasing individual performances for the students who selected running as their sport. Our first meet was at home, down at Fairview Park, and the boys put up a strong showing with Will Lockwood finishing second. In the last race of the season Will Lockwood bettered this performance by finishing first. Other notable performances during the term were from Stuart Watson, Stephen May and David Tuckwell, with these three boys finishing in the top 10 consistently. Volley StarsBelinda Colaneri & Jane Arter - The Year Six volleystar players enjoyed a successful and fulfilling season. All boys worked very hard on improving their volleyball skills, which strengthened as the season progressed. The boys also showed good organisation, thinking and team work skills. The most consistent players throughout the season were Nicholas Mollison, Andrew Prowse, Nicholas Trowbridge and James Drummond. The most improved players were Michael Yassa, Christopher Eliadis, William Simpson and Warren Lee. Alistair Webster - The Year 5A boys quickly learnt the skills for volleystars and established good team spirit. It was a very successful season with four wins and only one loss. While all players were effective team contributors, special mention goes to Tim Udorovic, Tom Gin and David Fekete for their participation and leadership on the court. Peter Hawkins - The Year 5B boys worked extremely hard to learn and develop the difficult skills of 'digging', 'setting' and 'spiking' for the volleystars game. Special mention to William Kyrou and James Franet for their improvement over the season. Term Three Training NightsTraining for boys will run from 3.25pm to 4.30pm. Boys are able to leave the school in their Scotch tracksuit. Monday - Year Five Basketball, Year Six Soccer and Year Six Hockey Tuesday - Year Six Basketball, Year Five Soccer and Year Five Hockey Year 3 - 6 House Cross Country EventDespite the threatening skies above, the cross country event was held in wintery conditions at Fairview Park last Friday afternoon. Fairview Park provided boys with a challenging course. Congratulations to all participants and thank you to all parents who attended. The individual and House winners of each Year group races were:
