14 July 2000 No. 20From the Head of Junior SchoolI extend a warm welcome back to all families to a new term. Where did last term go? It just seems time is passing more quickly every day and Third Term is set to pass equally as fast. Fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride! Year 6P have enjoyed their camp at Lake Nihllacootie this week and participated in a variety of activities that set many personal challenges. I enjoyed my visit on Wednesday and am proud to report I successfully completed the 'High Ropes Course' overcoming a fear of heights! 6W will attend the camp next week and 6I the following week. It is interesting to note that when I speak to boys in the Senior School, they often comment on their experiences at the Year 6 Camp - it is certainly one to look forward to for the younger boys. On Tuesday, we were delighted to officially open our new Junior Primary Playground. At our Prep to Six Assembly, Mrs Hughes, Mrs Chan, Mrs Brown and Mrs Worth from the JSPA joined in our celebration and this enabled us to thank them appropriately for their financial contribution to this project. Prep to Three then joined together just before morning tea to officially cut the ribbon. This was completed by Harry Hughes who had suggested this form of opening. Early use of the playground would indicate that it has been widely accepted and greatly appreciated. We also gratefully acknowledge the enormous contribution of the School Council who supported this project both financially and in concept. I am pleased to announce the following boys as Class Captains for Term Three. Congratulations are extended to:
An opportunity has arisen for electronic communications ('E-Pals') to be established with Scotch Oakburn in Launceston. This is simply a pen pal type situation, except email is used to transmit letters. A number of parents indicated earlier in the year that they do not wish their sons to use email and this is respected. However, should parents wish their son to participate in this activity please contact your class teacher. With the Olympic Games just around the corner, a team of staff have spent many hours planning a variety of activities throughout the term. Under the leadership of Ms McBride, our Olympic Theme will conclude with an 'Olympic Day' on Friday 18 August and whilst details will be provided later, put this date in your diary now as parents will be most welcome to share in many of the activities. Earlier in the year I mentioned the dangers associated with vehicles fitted with towbars reverse parking along Callantina Road. This week, I received a telephone call from a parent who suffered a nasty leg injury in the last week of term, which was a result of such parking. In the interests of the safety for all members of our community, I urge parents to consider this infringement of Council By Laws, as fines can also be issued in such cases. This week I left the boys with an underlying theme for the rest of the year. I encouraged them to reflect on their Reports and the feedback provided through Portfolios and Parent/Teacher Interviews to enable personal goals to be set for the rest of the year. I left the boys with the following... In everything, do your best. You should expect no less of yourselvesand we as your teachers, expect no more of you. My thought for the week.... "What we want to see is the child in pursuit of knowledge, and not knowledge in pursuit of the child." George Bernard Shaw Guy B Mason Music DepartmentThe Scotch College Junior School Occasional Choir has begun rehearsing and will operate during Third Term. This is a non-auditioned choir for boys in Years Four to Six who are not currently in the Junior School Choir. Rehearsals take place in the Junior School Assembly Hall on Wednesday afternoons from 3.30pm to 4.15pm. Any interested boys who have not received a notice should contact Miss Allen as soon as possible. Photographs from the Years Five and Six Concert are on display in the foyer of the Junior School Reception. Order forms for prints are available at the Junior School Office. Jenni Allen - Head of Music I require parents who are willing and able to cover books. If you are interested, please contact me through the Junior School office, and I will be in touch. Debra McMenamin Junior School MemoirsThe Term Two edition of the Junior School Memoirs was distributed today. Congratulations and thanks to Adrian Li of 3T who designed this term's cover. Debra McMenamin - Junior School English Coordinator Jeffrey Smart Exhibition. There is a major retrospective of the paintings of Jeffrey Smart. He is a modern Australian artist who has lived for many years in Italy. Jeffrey Smart paints the urban landscape of roads, trucks and buildings. The exhibition is being held at Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen until 6 August, 2000. This exhibition would really appeal to the boys as many of his works have an unusual twist to intrigue the viewer. All boys in Years Three to Six have discussed this exhibition in Art classes. Mrs. Ferres - Art Department From the Educational Support TeamWelcome back - we hope you all had a wonderful relaxing break. At the closure of the busy Term Three we had the opportunity to meet with many parents regarding their son's Access Program. We thank you for this time. If you were unable to see the appropriate Educational Support Teacher please do not hesitate to ring for an appointment. Again, for the Second Semester we will continue to offer all year levels remedial or consolidation programs in mathematics, reading, spelling and language development. As we are constantly reviewing the boys' progress there may be some changes to the groups. Other challenging extension and enrichment activities include problem solving and Literature groups. These are offered as small group withdrawal sessions or as part of a team teaching strategy with the class teachers at Year Three and Year Four. The Year Five and Year Six accelerated mathematics groups participate in the NSW Maths Olympiad Competition. The Singapore MOP (Yr 6) Competition and The Maths Challenge have recently been completed and we await the results. I would like to congratulate all the Year Five and Year Six boys who completed a Maths Talent Quest Project. I am sure many parents enjoyed viewing these at the Parent Teacher Evenings. The following projects have been submitted for the MTQ State Finals to be held in July Year Five
Year Six
The Day of Excellence to be held on Friday, 11 August, is rapidly approaching. This activity is offered to 30 Year Six boys from Scotch and they will join with approximately 150 boys and girls from seven independent schools. They will have the opportunity to participate in one of a range of exciting and challenging workshops. Scotch will be hosting Build an Environmentally Friendly Resort - Mrs Ferres, Electrifying Engineers - Mrs Wyatt and Mr Eilenberg and EcoSmart - Advertising and public relations Co - Ms Pride and Mrs Buchanan. Thirty Year Six boys have been invited from Scotch College to participate in this day. World Cyberphere Mission. the project linking Scotch boys with students in Germany, Canada and Singapore has concluded with a range of final presentations, highlighting the boys' in depth research into Global issues such as Pollution, Global Warming, Nuclear Testing and Extinction. The boys researched the topic, identified the problems, the causes and solutions, and have shared these with their Global Team members. The video conference with Canada offered a wonderful venue for discussion. As the Global Project concludes, I feel confident that the boys are more aware and appreciative of our cultural diversity. Many will maintain communication with their 'global' friends. They also have a greater understanding of the many environmental issues facing the world. I am sure as they grow up they will be very responsible citizens - always seeking to make a difference. A small group of boys will continue to consider environment issues and learn about the Community Problem Solving Program (CmPSP). We look forward to once again working with your children. Ms Marcia Bacon - Director Educational Support Services Parents AssociationI hope you have all received your invitations to the Caberet Evening on 19 August. We have had a fantastic response already and hope you can join us. Apart from the Australia Club being a beautiful venue the performances from parents and teachers will ensure a memorable and fun evening. A reminder to all class reps that there will be a short meeting in the Ramsay Room on Friday 21 July at 8.30am. Have a happy term Susan Hughes - President JSPA New Junior Primary PlaygroundAfter about 12 months of waiting, the newly constructed section of the Junior Primary playground, situated behind the Arthur Robinson boarding house, was declared 'open' on Tuesday, 11 July. Built thanks to generous funds from the School Council and the JSPA, the playground includes exciting and challenging climbing equipment, a sandpit, amphitheatre, grassed are and landscaped gardens just waiting to be planted, all nestled beneath a number of beautiful, established elm trees. Since the opening, the playground has been in heavy use and it has received a huge seal of approval by the Junior Primary boys. Normally, boys are not permitted to `use the area before school, but they are most welcome to give their parents a tour of the grounds before or after school for the next week or so.
