G B Mason

From the Head of Junior School

It has been pleasing to see some rain this week but this has not dampened spirits around our great school. Our 6I campers returned today having enjoyed their week away, with only a few activities being affected by the welcome rain.

I would like to thank the many staff who have been involved in these camps. The extra commitment and time required away from their own families is sincerely appreciated.

Our Outdoor Education Programme concludes in Term Four with our Year Two Sleepover and the Year Three visit to Phillip Island for an overnight stay.

During the week the boys welcomed Suzie Chapman-Popa, who spoke about her experiences at the Los Angeles Olympics, where she won a bronze medal in rowing. She told the boys how as a nine year old she dreamed of being involved in sport and how, when she was sixteen, she accidentally discovered the sport she later became involved in at a higher level. The boys loved her story about the gender card that all female athletes have to use at the Olympic Games

This week I received a letter from the City of Boroondara reminding us that Council Officers will be actively monitoring supervised school crossings and parking zones around schools, especially targetting those drivers who double park.

I have been asked to inform parents that changes to road laws decree that 'No Parking' areas now have a two minute limit, much shorter than the previous fifteen minute limit.

The Council is working hard in order to make the drop off and collection of boys as safe as possible and I urge parents to adhere to the regulations as indicated on signage around the school perimeter.

I extend best wishes to Waller House, who will be presenting their Years Three to Six Chapel Service next Thursday, and to Year Four, who have been eagerly preparing for their concert, also on Thursday.

This week, Mr Carson spoke to the boys at Assembly about 'caring for others' and doing things without being asked.

He read from the Book of Acts (chapter 3:1-10): the story of a lame man being healed by Peter. This story highlights how small acts of help, kindness or generosity can have such a great impact on the lives of others. Boys were encouraged to offer their help to others, not just this week, but every week.

My thought for the week ...

"From what we get, we can make a living,
What we give, however, makes a life."

JSPA

It was with much pleasure that members of the JSPA committee recently attended assembly to celebrate the opening of the new playground and the JSPA's contribution towards its cost. Around the same time we were delighted to hand Mr Mason a cheque to fund the teachers' wish lists for this year. Without the support of you, the parents, all this would be impossible.

I hope that many of you will now join us at the Cabaret Night on 19 August. No audience participation is required - just the ability to have a good time. Your class reps will be organising tables for your year level, so please contact them. We have had a fantastic response so far and are hoping for a full house.

Social Service

On Friday 4 August the Junior School will be participating in Good Sports Day. This is a fundraising and awareness campaign for the Children's Cancer Institute Australia. All boys will be encouraged to support this day by coming to school dressed in the uniform of their favorite sport, eg. football player, tennis player, basketball player. The boys will participate in a walk around the Scotch grounds with their Cross Age partners. Following the walk we will be having a sausage sizzle. All boys are encouraged to donate a gold coin for the privilege of dressing in their favourite sporting uniform. Information about the sausage sizzle will follow in next week's newsletter.

This is a reminder to MS READ-a-thon READERS and parents that it is now time to stop reading for the MS READ-a-thon.

Olympic Games Lunch

Thank you to all parents who have offered to help prepare lunches for their class. This lunch will take place on Friday 18 August. Please note that previous letter had the incorrect day. Many classes still need help on this day so if you are able to help out this would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me or your class teacher.

Mr Brian Sampson - Director of Studies

Student Absences

Thank you very much to those parents who responded to last week's request that boys arrive at school between 8am and 8.20am. The teachers have remarked that the prompt arrival of all boys ensures a smooth start to day, whereas late arrivals not only unsettle the boys who are late but they also disrupt the rest of the class and class programmes. This is particularly true for the younger boys.

This week your attention is drawn to the section of the Junior School Handbook which deals with Student Absences. The Handbook states that 'Any absence from school during normal office hours because of illness must be accounted for with a note or record book entry from parents on the return of the boy to school. If an absence of more than one day is anticipated, we appreciate a telephone message being left for the teacher concerned.'

Your attention to this matter would be most appreciated. It helps us to keep track of the boys and assists us in the effective planning and implementation of programmes.

Prep-Year Two Football Day

Last Friday a record crowd of supporters braved the cold and blustery conditions to cheer on the Junior Primary boys as they took part in the annual Prep to Year Two Footy Day. Jumpers representing most AFL teams were worn proudly and many budding AFL stars of the future were spotted during the course of the morning.

Prep boys were ably led by Year 6 boys in a football skills clinic, while the Year One and Two boys played a series of round robin matches within their year levels. As well as an impressive array of skills, the boys demonstrated commendable team spirit and sporting behaviour. The future of Scotch football is very bright!

This year we were very fortunate to have three players from the Richmond Football Club come to address the boys and to umpire some of the matches. We are very grateful to Matthew Richardson, Darren Gaspar and Andrew Kellaway for taking time out of their busy schedules to join us on the day. Perhaps Andrew owes some of his impressive form in his game against St Kilda to the tips he picked up from watching our young footballers. Thank you to Mr and Mrs Casey for arranging for these players to visit us.

Thank you also to the Mr Hawkins, Miss Colaneri and the Year 6 boys for the various parts they played in making the morning so successful. Congratulations and thank you to the Junior Primary teachers who took over the umpiring when the League players left. I don't know of anywhere you could go to see four simultaneous games of football being controlled by an all female umpiring panel. Is there anything these teachers can't do?

In fine football tradition, the morning finished off with pies and sauce all round. The boys then departed for the playground and more football, while the staff repaired to the warmth of the staffroom to recover with a hot drink and a comfy chair.

Some of Miss Carney's wonderful photos of the day will be included, along with Mr Hawkin's article, in the next edition of Great Scot. Make sure you take the time to look. You might want to get in early for the autograph of the next Nathan Buckley, James Hird or Wayne Carey.

Lost Cello Bow

During Term Two one of our students lost his cello bow within the school grounds. If any one has come across a cello bow, could they please report it to the Junior School Office.

Thank you
