11 August 2000 No. 24From the Head of Junior SchoolToday we welcomed approximately forty five children from other independent schools, who were visiting Scotch in order to participate in what has become the annual 'Day of Excellence'. This activity brought like minded children in Year Six under the banner of learning to work, explore, investigate, design, think, contemplate and create together. Ms Bacon once again coordinated this activity and I look forward to hearing reports of this exciting day of activities. Congratulations are extended to Christopher (Year Six) who earned first prize in the Regional finals of the German Speaking Poetry Competition. Christopher now competes in the State Finals on 26 August, for which we wish him well. Benjamin Wong (Year Six) was third in this section and was a credit to himself and his school. Unfortunately, Benjamin missed selection for the State Finals, as only first and second moved to the next round. Last Friday saw most boys coming to school dressed in their favourite sporting outfit. A walk-a-thon around the school in Cross Age Buddy groups was most enjoyable on a beautiful day, and concluded with a delicious sausage sizzle, cooked perfectly by members of the JSPA. Boys made a donation to the Children's Cancer Institute of Australia and, I am pleased to report, raised over $1800 for this worthy cause. Many thanks to families for their generosity and to the JSPA for their continued support. Our Olympic Day is to be held next Friday, with the opening ceremony due at 9.30am. Parents, families and friends are welcome - don't forget your camera! As a part of our lead up, we are running a '16 Days of Glory' programme involving boys running laps of the Junior School Oval each morning. Parents are more than welcome to join in a morning saunter around the oval at 8.00am. All you need is a pair of running shoes and plenty of energy! My theme for the week has been 'Tact'. The theme was introduced by words from Proverb 15, which reads: 'A gentle answer quiets anger, but a harsh one stirs it up.' Boys were reminded that being tactful involves thinking about things before you speak; keeping unpleasant or critical thoughts to yourself; being sensitive to the needs of others; using only kind and thoughtful words; and thinking of ways to tell the truth without hurting the feelings of others. My thought for the week...... The real art of conversation is not onlysaying the right thing in the right place, but to leave unsaid wrong things at the tempting moment. Guy B MasonMusic DepartmentThere will be aural test tuition for boys who are sitting for AMEB music examinations. Boys should meet Miss Allen at 8am on Wednesday mornings in the Upper Shergold Building. Miss Allen - Head of Junior School Music
Resource CentrePrimary Research Project:Congratulations to the group of Year Six boys who participated in this Australia wide project. They worked independently and enthusiastically. Categories this year were the Olympic Games, Federation, Children's Literature, Communication, Continents, Language, Money and Exploring our solar system. Students had to interpret the question carefully and then decide on the most efficient and reliable resource to find the answer. Well done boys! Ms A Hindson - Resource Centre Co-ordinator Christmas Service 2000Apologies for having to mention the word 'Christmas' at this time of the year. However, reluctant as I am to bring the end of the year even closer, it is in third term that the Junior Primary staff start to turn their minds to the much loved Junior School Christmas Service. This year we are planning to present a service with a multicultural flavour, hence we need a range of costumes which represent the national dress of many countries. If you have costumes which would be suitable for the boys to wear, and are willing to lend them to us for the service, please contact me at the school as soon as possible. Many thanks. Susan Hughes - JSPA President Book Launch ExcursionOn Friday the 4 August, ten Year Six boys jumped on a minibus and headed to Trinity Grammar. We were bound for the launch of Ernie Dingo's biography. The book is called 'Ernie Dingo: King of the Kids'. The author, Ernie's wife Sally, introduced it. Then Ernie gave us a brief history of his life before describing some of his meals in his earlier life. He told us how good snake really is. He went on to tell us how amazing he is at basketball and how it helped him into show business. Before being able to buy a copy of the book and get it signed, we saw under Ernie's trademark hat. We saw that he really has hair under there. When it was over we hopped on a minibus back to school. We donned our sports clothes and prepared for the rest of the day. I am looking forward to reading the book. Andrew - 6I ReminderAt the beginning of Term Three a notice was sent out in relation to an Asthma Survey from Latrobe University. It was a study looking at children who have asthma and how parent's beliefs, knowledge and coping styles can influence the daily functioning of the child. Any parent who is still interested in the questionnaire can still participate by contacting Ava Vujovich on 9846 7519 or Dr Greenwood at Latrobe University on 9479 1728 (Post Graduate Section).
