From the Head of Junior School

Congratulations to all staff and students on an absolutely spectacular Olympic Day last Friday. The colour, the activities and the participation from all were a real sight to behold.

It was especially pleasing to have so many families in attendance. This added greatly to our day and I trust all visitors enjoyed the day as much as we did.

Sincere thanks are extended to the many parent helpers on the day, but in particular to the following staff for their energy, enthusiasm and hours of preparation behind the scenes:

Ms McBride, Ms Pride, Mr Sampson, Mr Hawkins, Miss Colaneri, Mr Irvine, Mr Gregory, Mr Clarke, Ms Hindson, Mr Dickinson and Mrs Wyatt - they are all Gold Medalists!

Congratulations were also extended to Miss Allen, Mrs Piggin and the boys of the Choir for a beautiful performance at the JSHAA 2000 Music Festival. The boys were great representatives of the school and we all feel justifiably proud of their efforts.

This week, over forty boys are representing Scotch at the Interschool Skiing Competition. Results will be published next week.

The Parent Cabaret Evening was a huge success on Saturday night and I congratulate all performers for having a go and providing such wonderful entertainment. The planning committee did a wonderful job and I know all in attendance will join me in thanking them for a great night out.

Next Tuesday is Foundation Day. This important day in the life of our school celebrates the schools' birthday (actually in October!) and sees the annual Foundation Day Concert at the Melbourne Concert Hall. Once again, our choir will be performing and I wish them well for another successful performance.

Due to the conclusion of our Olympic celebrations there has been no theme for us during the week, but I do leave you with the following thought....

There are two types of people who will tell you
that you cannot make a difference in this world
Those who are afraid to toy themselves and
those who are afraid that you will succeed.

Olympic Day

Our Olympic day was a huge success thanks to the hard work of staff and also parents. As always, a small group of parents was able to provide the necessary assistance required by classroom teachers so that the healthy 450 lunches were made and stored within a short time frame. I extend my thanks to those hard working parents.

I would also like to thank the parents who gave up their morning to watch and support the boys for the Opening Ceremony and our Scotch Mini Olympics. It was wonderful to see so many parents cheering on their boys and helping the staff to create a most memorable day.

Many parents were also photographing and videotaping. As all of the staff were utilised in other areas, we were unable to tape the opening ceremony for our archives. If anyone has a video of the ceremony that they are willing for us to copy, I would love to hear from them.

Art - Visit from Cartoonist for Year Five boys

Professional cartoonist, Jeff Taylor or better known as 'Joffa' worked with the Year Five boys in the Art room this week. He showed boys how to draw simple cartoons using basic geometric shapes of squares, circles and triangles. All boys produced some great cartoons based on the Olympic theme, using a background and lots of expression and personality.

I am saving stockings, wool and small boxes at the moment. Thankyou to all parents who send materials to the Art room.

Mrs Ferres - Head of Junior School Art

Soccer Training

Reminder to parents there will be 5A soccer training on Monday 28 August at 3.30 pm instead of Tuesday. It will include a 5A v 6A practice match.

Mr Ian Clarke and Mr Andrew Murdoch

Music Department

Thankyou to all those people who have volunteered to billet students from St Peters in Adelaide for 23-27 October in Term Four.

We still need places for approximately twenty boys. Forms are available from the Junior School Office.

Miss Jenni Allen - Head of Junior School Music

Lote Department

Following the great success of the Grade Three 'Vogelhochzeit' concert at school and in Bayswater, Year Three boys will have the opportunity to see Rolf Zuchawski in concert. He has been one of Germany's most popular childrens' singers over the past 25 years and we are very fortunate to be able to experience one of his performances here. This will take place on 15 November at 12.30pm. If you are interested in extra tickets contact me at school and information can be found at: www.elbtour.de or at www.musik-fuer-dich.de

Mr Ian Clarke - German Teacher

JSPA

Thank you to all parents and teachers who attended last Saturday's Cabaret Evening. I'm sure you'll all agree with me that it was a fantastic and extremely fun evening with a wonderful sense of camaraderie. Our performers were sensational - so much talent in our school.

Some acts were videoed and viewings can be arranged - or payment will be accepted to prevent us showing them!

Thank you to my committee for their hard work, and thanks to those class reps who organised year level tables. To all who attended, thank you for your generosity of spirit and wallet! A special thanks to the donors of the raffle prizes. Apologies to Ros Franet for omitting her name from the list of Mothers' Choir members. We owe two parents change from their purchase of goods on the night. Please contact me on 9819 1870.

Everyone who is coming to Fathers' Day Breakfast next week should receive by Monday their confirmation slip setting out details of date, times and where to park etc. If you haven't, please telephone Sandra Dick 9815 1242
