JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORTS DAY - TOMORROW!

After months of planning and weeks of training, Sports Day is finally here and all is set for a wonderful day. It is exciting that all boys from Prep through to Six will be involved throughout the day. Parents, families and friends are very welcome to share in this very important day in the life of our Junior School.

Please note the following:

Year 3, 4, 5 and 6
Boys are to be in their House areas on the Main Oval in Senior School at 8.45am, at the latest.

Prep, 1 and 2
Boys are required to meet at the bottom of the Chapel steps at 10.20 am and will be dismissed from the track at 11.45 am.

For all boys

Correct sports uniform and hats should be worn. (School Tracksuit if it is cold)

Opportunities will be provided for boys to meet parents and purchase food items from stalls at appropriate times during the morning.

The sports will end by 1.05pm. Boys from P-6 will participate in the closing formalities.

For Parents!

Please encourage your sons, but in order to ensure the safety of boys and smooth completion of planned events, DO NOT proceed onto the oval at any time.

I wish all boys, our JSPA organisers (who have put in many hours behind the scenes), and parent helpers a wonderful day.

Congratulations to all boys in Years Three to Six who competed in the field events during the week. I was so pleased to see so many boys having a go and giving each activity their best shot! In my book, every boy was a winner - well done to you all.

150 Celebrations

As a part of the 150 celebrations next year, a variety of clothing items will be available for purchase by boys and, in fact all members of the Scotch community, for wearing on special occasions.

As an example, parents will have already noted that, in order to celebrate the arrival of the 150 Torch Relay to the school, Sunday 18 February 2001 has been designated a compulsory school day (or have you not yet read the 150 booklet??!!) . Final details will be available later, but this will be the first day when the Junior School community can come together in '150' apparel.

For boys, items such as t-shirts, polo shirts and special caps will become an optional part of the sports uniform for 2001.

Items will be displayed tomorrow and I encourage families to take the time to view them, as I would love to see the Junior School community get right behind this exciting venture. Order forms will be sent home in the next couple of weeks, but we will be the first section of the community to have the chance viewing the range available. A display will also be set up in the Junior School foyer for a short time.

This Week

Congratulations to Mrs Robertson and her Junior Primary boys for a wonderful Chapel service yesterday. With the theme of "God's Family" we heard a number of the parables from the New Testament based around life in families.

My theme for the week has been Modesty.

I spoke to the boys about how different athletes at the Olympics responded to winning and how most displayed modesty and humility after their wins, whilst others seemed boastful and brash in their success.

I reminded boys that being modest means that you do not need to brag or boast to attract attention and that you respect yourself by being comfortable with who you are. In relation to sports day tomorrow, we spoke about Saint Paul, who reminds us that life is like a race in which we are all runners. His message is that our reward is in the way that we finish the race, not merely getting there first. Our assistance in finishing our own race, is in having faith in God.

The following words from the book of Romans was shared on our weekly sheet...

"Do not think of yourself more highly than you should. Instead, be modest in your thinking, and judge yourself according to the amount of faith that God has given you."

(Romans 12: v3)

My thought for the week...

"The only honest measure of your success is what you are doing compared to your true potential."

Family Day Prep - Year Two

Just a reminder that Prep-Year 2 boys are to meet their teacher at the foot of the Chapel Steps at 10.20 am on Saturday. Please collect the boys from their teacher (beside the running track) at the conclusion of the P-2 events (approx 11.45am). Boys are to wear their normal PE uniform, plus their grey hat, and please include their windcheater if the weather calls for it. Similarly, please apply sunscreen if the weather calls for this. Thank you.

Mrs Chris Robertson - Director of Junior Primary

MS Readathon

Special congratulations go to James Sansom, Nicholas Paltoglou and Scott Sansom for their amazing efforts during MS Readathon. All three boys read over 30 books and raised an incredible amount of money for the MS Society. As a result they have been invited to attend the official Presentation Day on Sunday 15 October to receive their award.

Well done to these boys for their wonderful efforts with MS Readathon.

Mrs Emily Taylor - Social Services Co-ordinator

JSPA

Thank you to all who offered to help tomorrow at Sports Day. If there are any of you who could help between 11 and 12.30, could you speak to one of the stall convenors tomorrow morning as we are short of volunteers for this time slot. It should be a great day, weather permitting, and we particularly look forward to receiving your cakes. Could I reiterate that your cake will not be sold with your name on it, so please don't be self-conscious about your cooking abilities!

The Annual General Meeting of the JSPA will be held on Monday 20 November at 9.00 am in the Cardinal Pavilion. All welcome.

Next week we will be sending out forms for class reps for 2001. Please don't hesitate to put your name forward. It's not an onerous position. Apart from organising year level functions, we mainly ask that you support JSPA functions and encourage others in your year to do so also.

Mrs Susan Hughes - President, JSPA
