Family Day - JSPA
|
20 October 2000 No. 30From the Head of Junior SchoolWhat a pity it was that the rain tried to mar our Family Day last Saturday. However, nothing could dampen the spirits of all competitors. All track and field events were completed and it was only the relay events that were interrupted. These were completed on Tuesday afternoon in beautiful conditions, enabling the sports to conclude on a very positive note. Congratulations are extended to every boy who participated, for it is through participation and a conscious effort in achieving one's personal best, that success can be looked upon proudly. Special congratulations are extended to Timothy Mursell who broke a school record in the 10 years 800m, with a new time of 2 minutes, 45.30 seconds. Well done, Timothy! The competition was close for most of the carnival and final results can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. I extend thanks to the staff for their tireless efforts and who, after a busy week in the classroom, ensured such a smooth carnival. To Mr Hawkins and Miss Colaneri, another huge 'thank you' for organising such a successful athletics competition. The JSPA and volunteer helpers, under the guidance of Mrs Susan Hughes, are also to be thanked for the many facets of organisation, enabling the family atmosphere that we have come to appreciate, to be evident all day. Special thanks are extended to our Grounds and Resource staff who so capably prepared the oval and resources required for the day. Their efforts happen quietly behind the scenes and are rarely noticed, but sincerely appreciated. I also thank the many parents, families and friends who were able to join with us in encouraging the boys; your support was sincerely appreciated by all. On Monday I was pleased to present 10 certificates to boys in Year Six who participated in the Year Seven section of the Australian Mathematics Competition. I was pleased to award a high distinction and award for finishing in the top 0.3% of students to Oliver Baxter. Oliver also won a cheque for 40 dollars and a badge of recognition. High distinctions were also awarded to Andrew Fairservice, Thomas Sutton and William Li. Distinctions were awarded to Christopher Acton, Andrew Black, Thomas Naughton and Christopher Robson. Credit certificates were awarded to Clay Latta. It is interesting that each boy above finished above the state average for Year Seven students - a remarkable achievement and we congratulate each boy. Today is the last day for Year Twelve students and throughout the week we have been pleased to welcome back to the Junior School boys taking a trip down memory lane. It is reassuring to know that our little boys turn into such fine young men and I know the whole community joins me in wishing each boy well for his exams and future endeavours. Next week we welcome St Peter's College, Adelaide, on their annual music exchange and I look forward to the many exciting facets of this program. My theme for this week has been Humility. Boys were reminded that being humble involves the realisation that everyone is a human being, but each one so different; to respect what each person contributes; to admit and learn from your mistakes; and, to learn from others and to acknowledge personal accomplishments without thinking that it makes you better than others. We then read from Mark's Gospel where Jesus called His disciples and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must make himself last of all and servant of all," reflecting what it means to be truly humble. (Mark 9:33) My thought for the week.... "Never look down on anybody unless you're helping them up." (Jesse Jackson) Guy B Mason Family Day - JSPAThankyou to all of you who helped out on Sports Day by cooking cakes, helping out on a stall, or simply buying hamburgers, etc. Even though the weather was against us, it was still a very successful day. Tennis Day on 27 October is proving popular. Please contact Belinda Carmichael if you would like to play or come along for lunch. We will find you a team, hopefully with others from your year level. Please don't feel you have to be a great tennis player to join in. We are still seeking tennis related prizes for the day, so please let me know if you can help (9819 1870). Today in your son's school bag you will receive Class Rep nomination forms. Please consider taking this on. It will be an exciting time next year with all the 150 anniversary celebrations. We also have a couple of vacancies on our JSPA committee next year. If you are interested, please contact Alice Chan.
