From the Head of Junior School

Music and new friendships have been celebrated throughout the Junior School this week as many boys shared their musical talents with like minded boys from St Peter's College, Adelaide. Our week included a Chapel service giving thanks to God for the talents he has blessed each one of us with, numerous ensemble rehearsals and a combined concert, displaying the talents of the musicians involved.

Special thanks are extended to Miss Allen, Mrs Piggin and the instrumental teachers for making this exchange so successful. St Peter's have been most appreciative of the welcome they have received and boys have been pampered by their 'temporary' families. Thank you again to each family who so generously opened their home to our visitors.

My theme this week has been based around appreciating the lives we have. I stumbled across a book of poetry that I had been given in 1990 and the first line of poetry I was drawn to was, "For my life with all its problems, would be the dream of many."

I was moved by this line and had to find out more about the author, who it turns out was Jonathan Wilson-Fuller. Many parents may remember Jonathan as the 'boy in the bubble', a term which he detested. Allergic to just about everything, Jonathan was confined to his home, leaving it only in a special suit. Jonathan wrote the poem below as an 11 year old and I shared it with the boys in Assembly. I leave it with you as my thought for the week.

Daydream
On a stream of light
I float with ease
Through the window and through the green.
My mind is free and travels with speed,
For I'm out of myself, my problems left far behind.
I'm visiting that land, I don't know where,
The land where dreams come true,
With images of my mind's delight
Where pain is quite unknown
And time, of course, stops ticking.
Reality is so hard.
Soon my journey ends
And I am back where I was before,
Refreshed, but in my unchanged scene,
This is earth not heaven,
So problems are just a part of life.
Yet
For my life with all its problems would be the dream of many,
For I have food and shelter,
I have love and understanding,
I enjoy the right of freedom
And the security of peace.
I'll not complain.

Year Three are eagerly awaiting their camp next Thursday and Friday to Cowes. I look forward to sharing this experience with Year Three and wish them well for an enjoyable two days away.

Merchandise for 150 Celebration Year

Proposals for a range of special merchandise, including pullovers, sports singlets, caps and other items were recently considered by auxiliary representatives. Samples were also displayed at the Junior School Sports Day.

After further consideration of the problems associated with identifying specific sizes, minimum order requirements, financial guarantees and the necessity for ordering by 20 October to enable overseas manufacture, a decision has been made that the original proposal is unworkable. Alternative arrangements are now under consideration.

Junior School Art Project for the 150th Celebrations

As part of the 150 Celebrations in 2001, the Art Department of the Junior School will embark on a major project. This project will involve every boy in the Junior School from the very new Preps to Years 6 boys.

Boys will be working in the medium of mosaics to construct a bird bath surrounded by clay tiles made by Junior Primary boys, with a special insert of the Scotch Burning Bush and the letters '150', made by Year 6 boys in mosaic tiles. The bird bath will be a sculptural piece with bird, frogs and lizards set into the mosaic tile work. Boys in Years 3, 4 and 5 will makes these animals and birds.

An Artist in Residence will be assisting boys in this major project but we will need parent assistance as well. The project will start in Term 1 of 2001.

To start the project, donations of tiles are needed. Any type, colour or thickness of bathroom or kitchen tiles are needed for this project. Tiles that are plain and with patterns are also great for the boys to use. If any parents could donate tiles to the Art room it would greatly assist, as we need a large range of colours and types for this major project. Tiles will be broken by the boys into small pieces so that

they can be arranged and designed into different shapes, therefore any tiles donated do not have to be perfect.

In 1998, the Ocean Mosaic Wall was constructed outside the Art room and we hope to use this similar technique to build this sculptural piece.

Mrs Ferres - Head of Art and Craft.

Karate World Championships

We would like to congratulate Rafe Wilson in 2C for coming second in the Karate World Championships held on the 15 October. Well done Rafe!

Bike Education

A great big thank you is extended to the following parents who have taken groups of Year Four boys over the last three weeks as part of the Bicycle Education Programme. Many thanks to Astrida Cooper, Wendy Dawson, Diane Eves, Libby Fekete, Roslyn Franet, Jan Goldsmith, Stephen Grover, Wendy Haines, Judy Latta, Jennette Newham, Bronwyn Peters and Margaret Watson. Without their efforts we would not be able to run a successful programme and all boys and Year Four teachers appreciate all the time and commitment they have provided.

At our Assembly this morning we thanked our helpers and also presented Mrs Jennette Newnham with flowers in appreciation of assisting with Bike Education for TEN years. We admire her dedication over the years.

Liz Wyatt - Year Four Co-ordinator

Year Six Parents

A reminder to Year Six parents, today was the RSVP date for the Cocktail Party on Tuesday 12 December at the Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club.

The cost is $33.00 per head

This function will not be held unless we get sufficient numbers.

Any enquiries - Sally Robertson

JSPA

The JSPA were very disppointed to cancel the Tennis Day scheduled for today. Unfortunately, the weather was against us. We hope to have a similar day next year.

I would still like to hear from those of you who would like to be a Class Rep for 2001, particularly parents of Years Two, Three and Five.

Don't forget we have a couple of vacancies on the JSPA Committee next year.

Thanks

Susan Hughes - President, JSPA
