3 November 2000 No. 32From the Head of Junior SchoolIt has been another very busy week in our Junior School and the four day Exeat weekend ahead has been well deserved by all. Year Six boys represented the school at the Paralympic Parade through the city and were fine ambassadors for us all. Year One enjoyed their 'Hands on Science' experience and Year Three have returned from their overnight camp at Cowes. Year Four have completed their Bike Education Unit and have been well supported by an extremely capable group of parents. We were especially pleased to welcome our Bike Ed parent helpers to last Friday's Assembly in order to thank each helper individually. Special recognition was given to Jennette Newnham for completing ten years of service to this worthwhile program and we sincerely thank her for her enthusiasm over the years. (Long service leave has now been granted!) On Tuesday, we saw the running of the annual Year Two, 'Bungle Wungle Birdman Rally', where a variety of home made aircraft flew in various flight patterns, taking off from the Library balcony. All boys (and their family flight crews) are to be congratulated for creating such imaginative designs and for taking such an interested part in this exciting activity. Year Five have been busy with their 'Gold' unit and each class has been visited by a local bushranger, who gladly took possession of gold and money not under the protection of the local bank. Some sources have implicated my own involvement here, but this is denied!! On Monday I was pleased to present a number of trophies to boys who have been participating in the co-curricular Chess program (run by 'Chess Ideas')during Terms Three and Four. My theme for this week has been "Generosity". This theme was chosen in recognition of some wonderful news late last week, when the SIDS organisation notified us that our boys raised the most money amongst Victorian Primary Schools. This was wonderful news and the staff are so proud of each boy. Our prize is a 48cm television and VCR unit, which we have decided to pass on to the Principal and students of 'Very Special Kids'. This then extends the generosity of the boys. A special Assembly will be arranged to receive and pass on our prize. Well done Scotch! We also heard from the Bible, focussing on the parable of 'The Widows Offering', from the book of Luke, where an old lady gave two small coins at the temple, compared to others who gave much, simply because they could. This message encourages us to think about our giving to those less fortunate, rather than just giving because we can. With this theme in mind, I leave you with the following as my thought for the week: "Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant."I trust everyone enjoys a restful, extra long weekend. Guy B MasonSafety at 'Drop off-Pick up' zoneA number of complaints have been made to me by members of the Scotch Family that parents are parking their cars illegally in Callantina Road when dropping off or picking up their children up from the Junior School. By double or even triple parking, the boys' safety is being put at extreme risk. Please use this area in a safe and unselfish manner so that all of our boys can arrive and depart from school safely. A notice went home today to all families about Pertussis (Whooping Cough). If you did not receive the notice please collect one from the Junior School Office. Mr Rodney Carson - Deputy Head Year Six ParentsUnfortunately the Cocktail Party planned for Tuesday 12 December will NOT take place.
