From the Head of Junior School

Another busy week has passed in the life of our Junior School.

On Tuesday, the boys of Years 4 to 6 presented a wonderful concert at the Camberwell Civic Centre. Using this venue for the first time resulted in high quality performances in an auditorium designed more specifically for performer and audience comfort.

Congratulations are extended to each performer, Miss Allen, Mrs Piggin and the many instrumental teachers for making the concert such a success. The Music Captain, Thomas Naughton, is to be commended on the initiatives he has implemented and way in which he has fulfilled his role this year. His solo performance on Tuesday was one of the highlights of our concert and reflects the qualities displayed by this young man. I also thank the parent community for their support of this new initiative - I trust all enjoyed this memorable evening.

On Wednesday, Year Three attended a concert performed by the author of 'Die Vogelhochzeit', the play they presented earlier in the year. Writer Rolf Zuckowski was delighted to hear that an Australian school had performed his production and he has been presented with a souvenir program and video of Year Three's performance.

Year Five visited Sovereign Hill today and I have no doubt that they enjoyed their special excursion very much. I look forward to hearing about the day in more detail next week.

Over the last weekend, several boys competed at the Victorian Primary Schools' Athletic carnival and the results returned are most impressive. Competing at the second highest level possible for students of this age, each boy can justifiably feel proud of himself, regardless of result.

Special congratulations to: Sandy Buchanan - 1st place 11 years Shot Put (new State Champion)

11 years 4 x 100m Relay - 2nd place (Luke Woodard, Sandy Buchanan, Andrew Earle, Anthony Zielke)

Luke Woodard - 3rd place - 11 years 80m Hurdles

All results can be found elsewhere in this newsletter.

Next Monday evening will see the final lecture in a series presented by Scotch and St Catherine's regarding the 21st Century IT Revolution. John Craven, David Myles and John Stuckey will be presenting the lecture and details can be found in the accompanying letter from the Director of Computing, Mr Greg Baker. Come along to hear these three key figures discuss and debate the implications of change for Australia and today's students.

I remind parents of Years 3-6 that Junior School Speech Night is rapidly approaching and that it is a compulsory activity for these boys. Speech Night will be held in the Memorial Hall on Thursday 7 December and, unless the weather is oppressively hot, boys will require their formal uniform. Please ensure that this date is added to the family calendar.

My theme for this week has been 'Courage'. During Monday's assembly, I reflected on our Remembrance Day ceremony last Friday and discussed the courage displayed by so many men and women on our behalf. I reminded the boys they are practising courage when they do what is right, even when it seems hard or scary; that they should be willing to try new things; to admit mistakes and learn from them; to make it up to people when they do wrong; and to ask God for His help and guidance.

I left the boys with the following affirmation:
I have the courage to try new things. I admit my mistakes and learn from them.
Today, I will listen to my heart. I have the courage to do what is right.
My thought for the week:
Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point."

Class Representatives 2001

Thank you to all who have offered to act as class reps in 2001.

Your first meeting will be held on Friday 1 December 2000 at 8.45 am in the Junior School Staffroom. Please contact Alice Chan if you have any queries.

As this is my last week as President of the JSPA, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your encouragement throughout the year and your participation in functions that the JSPA has organised. The support of the school community has made my job so much easier.

I would also like to thank my Committee who are a remarkable group of hardworking and enthusiastic women. We have shared some happy times, as well as some more nerve wracking experiences.

I am delighted to be leaving the Committee in the capable hands of the incoming President, Alice Chan, who will do a terrific job in continuing the JSPA's dual role of friend and fund raising.

My thanks to the staff of Junior School - another neverending source of support and laughs. Lesley Armstrong and Sally Laity in the office have been very generous with their time and patience. Rod Carson and Guy Mason have been great friends to me and to the Committee and I thank them for that.

The JSPA AGM will take place in the Cardinal Pavilion at 9 am on Monday 20 November. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Mrs Susan Hughes - President, JSPA

Second Hand Book Exchange

As a service, Scotch College offers boys - and their parents - an opportunity to purchase some textbooks required for the next year at a reduced price through Second Hand Book trading.

This is a non-profit exercise staffed by volunteer parents who happily give their time for a worthy enterprise.

The Second Hand Book sale is to be held on Monday 4 December - all day (7.30am - 3.00pm). We accept cash or cheque only on the day. If cash, small denominations please.

A notice regarding Second Hand Trading will accompany your son's booklist. Please watch for it and we hope to see you there.

Sue Swan - Co-organizer Second Hand Trading

Environment Day

Just a reminder that next Friday (24 November) is the annual Prep - 3 Environment and Picnic Day. Details of the day have already been provided in a letter which requires you to send back a signed permission slip.

Please note that we have been advised that we will not be able to take our own ponding equipment, so please do not send any of this equipment on the day. All other arrangements remain the same.

Thank you

Chris Robertson - Director of Junior Primary

Year Five Family Day - Fairview Park, Hawthorn 12.30 pm - 3.30 pm

Park your car in Leonda car park (off Riversdale Road) and join us for a light hearted picnic before the end of the year. Come and play cricket with you son or just enjoy the company of other parents.

Past experience has shown that some games involving water (water pistols, super soakers) can become very 'rough and tumble. Parents are expected to supervise children for the afternoon.

We look forward to seeing you all there. Year Five Co-ordinators for enquiries are:

Ros Franet and Carol Johns

Year Six Family Day & Cocktail Party

This Sunday is the 'Picnic Lunch' on the rugby oval, with the CUTTING OF THE GRADUATION CAKE at 2.30pm.

Remember boys, to save a bit of pocket money for the Year Six gift. The special yellow collection boxes will be in your classrooms on Tuesday and Wednesday 21 and 22 November.

It's on again. Year Six Parents' Cocktail Party is on Thursday 30 November. Look for more details on the flyer.

Jan Goldsmith - Year 6 Class Rep

Physical Education

Last Sunday and Monday, the Victorian Track and Field Championships were held at Olympic Park. Despite warm and windy conditions, we had some excellent results. Congratulations again to all of the boys who competed.

Mr Peter Hawkins - Head of Junior School Sport
