G B Mason

From The Head of the Junior School

What a wonderful week it has been and I congratulate each boy on the way he has settled into the routines of a new school year. If this first week is any indication of what is to come, then we are set for another fantastic year.

Today I was pleased to present badges to 18 boys in Year Six who have been selected as School Officers for this term. All boys in Year Six who do not hold School or House roles, will be given the opportunity throughout the year to perform this important role. As all Year Six boys are considered leaders of our Junior School, it is appropriate that each boy will be acknowledged as such.

Congratulations are extended to Term One School Officers: Sam Cruickshanks, Marco Parisi, Stuart George, John Pang, Edward Brockfield, James Pearse, Thomas Caldwell, Camerin Grossman, Alexander Tallent, Toby Walker, Boyd Martin, George Mills, Matthew Rees, Robert D'Agostino, William Barbour, Edward Bourne, James Lacey and David Fekete.

Congratulations are also extended to Term One Class Captains:

3T Jackson Finlay

4I Nicholas Paltoglou

5A William Bernard

6D Matthew Tsang

3W Charles Goodacre

4K Thomas Ryan

5Y Edward Keating

6G Oliver Kerr

4M Daniel Blyth

5W Callum Maxwell

6P John Pang

In January, Derek Yu (4I) travelled to Canberra to compete in the Australian Junior Chess Championships. Competing in the Under 10 division, Derek finished equal first, with four other students. This is a wonderful achievement and I congratulate Derek on his efforts. Co curricula chess will be available later in the year.

February is always a busy time for staff and parents and this year is no exception. I remind parents about the forthcoming Parent Information Evenings scheduled over the next week or so. (See 'Forthcoming Date's.') These nights provide an important facet of our communication process, where parents can hear directly from their son's teacher, their expectations and the programme outline for the year. The Principal, Dr Donaldson will be speaking briefly at our P-3 and 4-5 evenings, before parents move to classrooms. I urge parents to move directly to the hall (not classrooms) for a prompt start at 7.45pm. Supper will follow afterwards for those parents who are able to remain a little longer.

As mentioned last week, a special service of thanksgiving will be held at the Scot's Church this Sunday, commencing at 11.00am. All families are welcome to share this service of worship. I again remind parents of the Torch Relay on Sunday 18 February, which is a compulsory school activity for all boys. Details can be found attached to this Newsletter.

Parents who may wish to claim for the Education Maintenance Allowance should contact the Junior School Office for further details.

My theme for this week has been 'Friendliness'. Boys were reminded that friendliness is taking an interest in other people, being warm and courteous. When you are friendly, you share the things you have, your time, your ideas, your feelings and yourself. When you are a friend you share the good times and the bad. Friendliness can be a smile or a kind word. It is caring without being asked to.

The Bible reminds us that, "The sweetness of a friend is better that one's own counsel"

(Proverbs 27:9)

My thought for the week....
People will forget what you said.
People will forget what you did.
But, people will never forget how you made them feel.

Guy B. Mason

Information Technology

The Junior School web site has been updated and now contains all of the relevant information for the new school year. Some pages have student work samples and others contain photos of activities, which have occurred in the Junior School. There are also many links to external Internet sites. Spend some time looking around our updated site.

In order to publish student names (first only), work samples and photos on the Internet, the school requires parental consent each year. Could you please complete the attached Internet Consent Form (Prep-6) and Acceptable Use Agreement (Year 1-6 only). These forms should be returned to your class teacher as soon as possible.

If you have any suggestions regarding the Junior School web site or any questions relating to Information Technology, please feel free to contact me through the Junior School Office.

Celebrate 150 Merchandise

Collection of Celebrate 150 Merchandise was stated as 12 February in last week's newsletter. Unfortunately this date has been changed to Friday 16 February. The orders will need to be collected from the Bookroom between 8.30 am - 3.30 pm.

Art Display in the School Foyer

Year Six boys have been studying the opening of Parliament at Federation in 1901. The boys have been looking at the painting by Tom Roberts of this special function in the Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne. They have painted important people who would have attended this function. Boys painted a portrait in profile or the front view and tried hard to make them look old fashioned and important. On display in the school foyer and the Assembly Hall are a range of these excellent works. In the foyer these boys' paintings are framed for display - Tom Caldwell 6G, Guy Robey 6D, Andrew Yuen 6G, Jonathan Wilcox 6D, Sam Cruickshanks 6P, Edward Ripper 6G, Ryan Sutton 6D.

Susan Ferres - Head of Junior School Art

Address Lists

Reminder to parents to please check their address lists on their sons' class door from Monday onwards.

Drama Costumes

As you are probably aware Year Four Five and Six boys have started drama this year with a loud, but productive, bang (?)

I am looking for some assistance with costumes. If you have any preloved, looking for a new home jackets, ties or hats around, please send them along to school with your son.

Thank you
James Robertson - Drama Teacher

JSPA

It was great to see so many Prep and Year Four parents at Morning Tea. I hope you had an enjoyable time getting acquainted with new parents and catching up with the ones you already know. Years One, Two, Three, Five and Six Parents, please do join in your Year level Morning Teas.

The JSPA has faithfully organised the traditional Term One Year Level Cocktail Party. Dates below:

Prep

Tuesday 13 February

Year 5 and 6

Thursday 1 March

Years 1, 2 and 3

Thursday 22 February

Year 4

Tuesday 27 February

Time: 7 pm - 9 pm
Venue: Junior School Courtyard

The caterers for the cocktail party have a great new chef and I have had good reports from Scotch parents! The ticket price has increased, as health regulations now require the catering staff to serve the food and drinks thereby introducing an additional cost factor, and lastly, the GST component.

Still, the cocktail parties are fun and relaxing evenings, so I urge you to come along, and sample the gourmet delights of the new chef over a glass of wine or two with your fellow Scotch parents.

Alice Chan - President, JSPA
