G B Mason

From The Head of the Junior School

Last Monday I was pleased to welcome past Chairman of School Council and current Chair of the 150th Organising committee, Mr Bruce Lithgow, to a special Prep to Six Assembly. Mr Lithgow was joined by the Senior School Captain (and ex-Junior Schoolboy) Brendan Ferguson.

Mr Lithgow outlined the School Crest and highlighted the meanings of the various elements, and then presented a representative from each class with their commemorative tie. This tie is a gift from the Old Collegian's Association and is to be the tie for boys in Years Three to Six for 2001. It would seem there has been some confusion regarding ties for the boys of the Lower Primary. As these boys do not wear ties as a part of their winter uniform, they have received the tie as a gift and, hopefully, a meaningful momento of this special year.

Best wishes are extended to Year Four who will enjoy their camp next week and I look forward to visiting the campsite on Thursday. I know a lot of pre organisation has already occurred and I wish all campers and staff happy few days away.

I advise parents that Mr Rodney Carson will be relocating to Western Australia at the end of this term. Mr and Mrs Carson have family in WA and it has been an ambition for them to return to the west. Mr Carson will be joining the staff of the Middle School at Tranby College in the suburbs of Perth. Whilst there will be opportunities to extend our thanks and best wishes later on, I do extend congratulations to Mr Carson.

Mr Brian Sampson will be Acting Deputy Head and Director of Studies from the beginning of Term Two, until an appointment has been made.

Due to our major Assembly this week, we have had no theme. I do however briefly outline the School Crest for your interest.

The Burning Bush - eternal flame, never consuming.
The shield is quartered by the Cross of St Andrew - our Scottish heritage.
Above, the Royal Crown - symbolic of our association with the Commonwealth.
Left, the Southern Cross - recognisable from everywhere in the Southern Hemisphere.
Right, the Torch - symbolising the place of learning, eternal light.
Below, a Lymphad or Galley - in the great pursuit of knowledge and endeavour.

Each of these symbols is represented on the 2001 commemorative tie.

My thought for the week...

We are not here by chance.
God put us here for a purpose,
and our lives are never fulfilled and complete
until His purpose becomes the foundations
and centre of our lives.

Information Technology Department:

An Information Technology Club has been started in the Junior School and all boys in Years Three to Six are welcome to join. The club will meet each Day 3 in the Resource Centre during lunchtimes.

Members of the Information Technology Club will be taught advanced skills relating to current applications and will have the opportunity to experiment with new applications and technology. Various competitions will be run each term, allowing boys to apply their new skills and show their creative flair.

More details about the Information Technology Club will shortly appear on the Junior School web site. Stay tuned...

JSPA

I was delighted to see so many friendly Scotch parents and staff members mingling happily at the JSPA cocktail parties. We were lucky with the weather being refreshingly cool on our cocktail evenings, despite the recent hot spell. The new chef also lived up to his reputation. I believe everyone had a merry and enjoyable time and, once again, I thank you for your support!

As announced in last week's newsletter, the JSPA is holding a stall at the Highland Gathering on Saturday, 7 April 2001. Your JSPA committee has been preparing for the Scottish Provisions Stall and ovens in the homes of various members have been fine tuning the recipes of shortbread, Dundee cakes, etc to perfection. These recipes will be provided to you.

Highland Gathering Working Bees will take place on Tuesday, 6 March and Wednesday, 7 March in the Ramsay Room from 8.30 am onwards. They will finish around 12 noon (please stay as long as you can) and coffee/tea will be provided.

We will be putting together the Highland Gathering Kits to be distributed to every Junior School family. It will be lots of fun. Hope to see you there. Please ring Gabriel Goldsmith on 9822 9995 for any queries you may have.
