G B Mason

From The Head of the Junior School

Welcome back to our Year Four boys and staff who have spent three days this week on their annual Camp at 'Weekaway'.

I was pleased to visit the camp yesterday and it was a most enjoyable day sharing in the various adventure activities.

Our camping programme is such an important facet of the personal development of our young men and I am confident that each boy will have benefited from the extensive programme undertaken.

I again extend thanks to the staff who attended the camp. Their care for each boy and attention to detail throughout twenty four hour supervision is always of the highest level. I trust each Year Four boy takes the time to extend his own thanks in his own way.

My theme for this week has been 'Trustworthiness'. The boys were reminded that being trustworthy means you think before you promise to do something; to remember what you promise to others and to do the things you have promised to do.

We shared a passage from the book of Ecclesiastes that tells us, "....do what you promise to do. Better not to promise at all than to make a promise and not keep it. Don't let your own words lead you in to sin......" (5: 4 & 5)

I then left the boys with the following affirmation;

"If you are good, you are guided by honesty.
People who can't be trusted are destroyed by their own dishonesty".

(Proverb 11:3)

German for new boys

In addition to the after school German programme being offered every Tuesday in the Language Centre, new boys can supplement their learning by borrowing various materials from the German room. Three audio tapes per class are now available, containing basic vocabulary and songs, and these can be taken home and recorded. The CD Rom 'The Language Market' is a fun way to learn the language and 15 - 20 copies are available to borrow, along with a huge selection of reading books.

Please encourage your boys to make full use of these materials, as they really do need to add to the 105 minutes of classroom learning time. If you are searching for additional materials to use at home, try the Language International shop on the corner of Glenferrie and Barkers Roads. They have an excellent selection and are extremely helpful.

Mr Ian Clarke -Head of German

Reading Room

We have recently purchased a wonderful supply of many fiction and non-fiction texts for boys to use during Guided Reading sessions and to take home to share.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who have contributed their time and energy in helping cover these texts. It has been greatly appreciated by all staff and boys.

There are still more books and literacy resources to be covered and we will be holding another 'working bee' on the morning of Wednesday 14 March. Look forward to seeing you there.

We also require some typing done for the Reading Room If there are any parents with word processing skills and would like to help out, it would be appreciated if they could let the school know.

Miss Larissa Raymond - English Co-ordinator

Medical Information

The Junior School is currently updating the medical information that is available to staff. Please inform your classroom teacher if your son's medical condition has altered during the last 12 months.

It is also important to inform staff, if your son has any serious medical conditions.

Resource Centre

On Monday 26 March, poet Steven Herrick will be visiting Years Five and Six boys and introducing them to the delights of contemporary poetry.

His publishers have supplied us with copies of three of his books, which are now for sale, at a cost of $9 each (this is a great saving on RRP).

The books for sale are:

1. Poetry to the Rescue
2. My Life, My Love, My Lasagne
3. The Spangled Drongo

Years Five and Six are able to purchase these titles now from the Resource Centre. The author can sign them on the day of his visit.

JSPA

Highland Gathering

Thankyou to all those parents who helped pack the Highland Gathering Kits on Tuesday and Wednesday. A great time was had by all. These kits will be sent home via your son's school bag on Friday 23 March (please look for them then) and this will give you enough time to bake some goodies and get them back to us in the last week of Term 1, or bring them on the day, Saturday 7 April.

Re-enactment Day Thursday 22 March 2001

As part of supporting the 150 Celebrations, the JSPA is party to Re-enactment Day. The day promises to be interesting and fun for the boys and other family members! The JSPA will be providing a sausage sizzle for the boys and your committee members will be busy cooking and serving food on that day.

We are in need of some parents to help out in the Art Room and some others to assist our caterers, Spotless, with tea and coffee. The session times are as follows:

Art Room

1. 9.00 am -10.00 am
2. 10.00 am - 11.00 am
3. 1.30 pm -2.30 pm

Coffee & Tea

11.00 am - 1.30 pm

It would be great if the helpers could be in 1850s costume and although it is not mandatory, it would certainly add the atmosphere of the day. The women wore long, full gathered skirts with petticoats and lacy blouses. One could even be creative with fabric shower caps, shawls/pashimas, period-style brooches, etc. The men dressed in attire as suggested for the boys.

If you are able and would like to be a helper on Re-enactment Day, please ring Jan MacLean on 9885 0356 indicating your preference of stall and session time. Jan would also love to hear from you if you have any useful garments for dress-up that you are happy to loan to a parent helper.

Mother's Day Luncheon

This year the lunch will be at Fenix Restaurant, Richmond on 11 May. Mark it in you diary. Invitations will be sent out soon.

As in previous years, the JSPA has relied heavily on the generosity of parents and the wider school community for donations of prizes for the lucky envelope draw. This is one of the major JSPA fundraising events for the year. As you know, funds raised go back into the school for the benefit of the boys.

Please give some thought as to what you, or someone you know, may be able to donate (eg vouchers and subscriptions, as well as goods). All donations will be gratefully acknowledged on the day.

Offers of donations and queries to Jo Wormald on 9818 4572.
