16 March 2001 No. 7From The Head of the Junior SchoolThis week saw the first meeting of our Student Representative Council (SRC) for 2001. A boy has been selected to represent each class, bringing to this regular meeting issues and concerns for discussion amongst the student community. Issues raised are then brought to me for further discussion. I am pleased that the boys have this opportunity to provide me with feedback and I reassure the boys that the concerns they raise are given serious consideration. I extend congratulations to the boys who have been elected as the SRC Representative for their class for the first semester: 1851. Gold has been discovered, but school goes on……dare to enter through the gates of the Junior School and be transformed…….it is not Harry Potter, the Twilight Zone or Stargate…… it is… JUNIOR SCHOOL RE- ENACTMENT DAY!!!! So, next Thursday, accept the challenge and get ready to be beamed back in time as you visit the school, as it may have been in it's early days in East Melbourne. Mr Irvine, Mr Sampson and a dedicated committee of staff have been working for nearly two years, preparing the finer details of the day. So many activities have been planned and parents, families and friends are welcome and encouraged to visit the school throughout the day. The day will commence with an opening assembly at 8.25 am which will be held in the courtyard and, again, all are welcome. Families received a copy of the day's activities with last week's Newsletter - make sure you have your dancing boots on, as all are expected to join in! Period costume is not required, but anyone wishing to enter the spirit of the occasion would be most welcome to join in 'dressing up' for the day! (See last week's information sheet for ideas.) This is going to be a wonderful day and I look forward to welcoming those of you who can make it, to life in the 1850s……. "Beam us back, Scotty!" As it has been a short week, we have had no theme, but I leave you with the following as my thought for the week… "Just how old in Victorian history is Scotch College may be assessed from ("First Hundred Years - Scotch College Melbourne" Page 3) Guy B. Mason Art NewsMany classes have painted boys running with the Scotch torch and at present there is a good sample of paintings of the Torch Relay painted by Year Four boys in the Junior School foyer. As part of this display there are also some great photos of the Torch Relay day. Year Six boys visited the National Gallery of Victoria on Russell Street last Friday for an excursion. The boys had an education officer who helped them look at a range of paintings, with a view to studying an artist and doing some Art History research. I am still collecting tiles, as our tile project will be conducted in Terms Two and Three of 2001. So any kitchen, bathroom or pool tiles of any colour or shape will be gratefully accepted. Our Pioneer House from shoe boxes has now been completed and the boys are happily playing in their Pioneer cubby house. Three or four boys can fit inside the house and it has been painted to look like a 'Wattle and Daub' house of 150 years ago. Thank you to all parents who support the Art program. Mrs Susan Ferres - Head of Art and Craft Year Six Visit to the National Gallery of Victoria on RussellOn Friday 9 March, Year Six went to the National Gallery of Victoria on Russell Street. We were divided into four groups. Each of the groups had a guide. Our guide explained in detail about each of the paintings we saw. The most unusual painting was by Mark Rothiko. The name of the painting was 'Untitled Red' and it was painted just red. The paintings that most of the Year Six boys liked were 'The Banquet of Cleopatra' by Tiepolo and 'Shearing the Rams' by Tom Roberts. Before we went back to school, we bought a postcard of our favourite painting for our Art project. We learnt a lot about painting. 6G Prep-Year Two 'Tinkering'Thankyou to the parents who have sent us small, broken, household appliances and toys which we can dismantle during 'tinkering' time. We are in desperate need of more items before we can begin these lunchtime sessions. If you have any small items which no longer work, please send them to me at the school. Naturally we ask that you consider the safety aspect of these items, ie no glass components, electrical cords removed, no heavy items, etc. Thank you Chris Robertson - Director of Junior Primary Re-Enactment DayA reminder to all boys and parents that the Celebration of 150 years hits the Junior School next Thursday 22 March RE-ENACTMENT DAY. It is important that all boys dress-up for the day and get involved in the spirit of 1850's. I hope parents and family are able to visit the school for some time throughout the day. Please note the change of dismissal times on this day. Prep activities will finish at 2.30 pm and, if their parents are present, Prep boys may go home at this time. All other boys in Years One to Six will be dismissed at 3.30 pm. Year One and Year Two parents are asked to take special note of this later than usual dismissal time, for this day only. Mr Brian Sampson - Director of Studies Year Six Great Scot Biography PartyAs part of their term's programme of study on the history and development of Scotch College, Year Six students, have been researching a member of the College community. Many of the boys have personally interviewed their chosen 'Great Scot' as they have sought to acquire information about the School and the 'Great Scot' in past times. The boys have sought information on the person's early life, their education, family life, career, personal and professional challenges and achievements, memories of the School, Melbourne and Australia, advice for the future, along with advice for future generations. In order for the Year Six boys to adequately thank and recognise the contributions that these members of the Scotch Community have provided, boys and their 'Great Scot' are invited to an afternoon tea party to be held in the Scotch College Junior School Assembly Hall, on the afternoon of the Thursday 29 March, 2001. Afternoon tea and refreshments will be served. Year Six boys are asked to bring along a plate of afternoon tea for this occasion. Displays of the boys' work from this unit will be on display, along with the autobiography project that the boys have individually completed. At the 'Great Scot Biography Party' it is expected that students will introduce their guests, meet other guests and learn of their association with the college. Further information regarding this event will be provided by your son's class teacher: Ms Pride; Mr Dickinson; or Mr Gregory. Mr Andrew Murdoch - Head of Information Technology JSPARe-Enactment Day Thursday 22 March 2001As mentioned in the newsletter last week, the JSPA is participating in the Junior School Re-Enactment Day at Scotch College in the 1850s. We are still in need of some parents to help out in the Art Room or with serving tea and coffee. The session times are: Art Room1. 9.00 am -10.00 am 2. 10.00 am - 11.00 am 3. 1.30 pm -2.30 pm Coffee & Tea11.00 am - 1.30 pm It would be great if the helpers could be in 1850s costume and, although it is not mandatory, it would certainly add to the atmosphere of the day. The women wore long, full gathered skirts with petticoats and lacy blouses. One could even be creative with fabric shower caps, shawls/pashimas, period-style brooches, etc. The men dressed in attire as suggested for the boys. If you are able and would like to be a helper on Re-Enactment Day, please ring Jan MacLean on 9885 0356 indicating your preference of stall and session time. Jan would also love to hear from you if you have any useful garments for dress-up that you are happy to loan to a parent helper. The Committee and I look forward to seeing you on Thursday, it will be a great day! Alice Chan - President, JSPA Forthcoming Events
