From The Head of the Junior School

What a wonderful day we celebrated yesterday when we came together to experience life in the 1850's. Whilst the weather could have been a little nicer to us, not one spirit was dampened and the many activities steamed ahead in slightly modified conditions.

Boys learned from Bruce Hargraves about the history of bicycles and even shared in some Australian poetry as they journeyed through time; boys experienced a traditional Colonial School, where slates replaced paper and the threat of the 'cuts' ensured proper manners and respect by all; damper was made, cooked and eaten enthusiastically and all danced to the melodious tunes of the "Shenanigans". There were bush stories, complete with live donkey; colonial games; a trip around the Boarding House in a horse drawn buggy; paper making; Coconut Ice; art activities, building our own log cabins - I am getting tired again just listing all of the activities that were shared, but what a day that we will remember!

I was so impressed with how the boys entered into the spirit of the day by dressing so appropriately and I extend sincere thanks to families who obviously spent many hours preparing costumes for the day. I was also impressed with the number of parents who came dressed for the occasion - be reassured that your efforts greatly added to the day.

I extend thanks to the JSPA who contributed in so many ways, particularly for our scrumptious lunch, tea and coffee and so much more. To all the mums who gave so freely of their time, the Junior School boys and staff say a huge "THANK YOU!!"

A day such as this cannot happen without the commitment and dedication of such a talented staff and I know the parent body join me in extending a hearty congratulations to every member of staff, who each did so much to make the day so special for our boys. Mr Irvine and Mr Sampson led a dedicated organising committee and they can all be justifiably proud of what will be remembered as a very special day in our 150th Celebrations.

In some ways, it is a shame that it all had to end, but we all have lasting memories of a very special day and with this in mind, I leave you with the following as my thought for the week....

I didn't ask for it to be over, but then again, I never asked for it
to begin. For that's the way it is with life, as some of the most
beautiful days come completely by chance. But even the most beautiful
days eventually have their sunsets.

Ms Alison Hindson - Co-ordinator of Resource Centre

Social Service

On Tuesday 3 April, we will be having our first Social Service activity for the year. This will be to raise money for the Port Phillip Special School.

Amelia Cruichshanks, sister of Sam Cruickshanks 6P will be coming out from the Port Phillip Special School to speak about the school.

As it will be Casual Clothes Day, boys are encouraged to dress in casual clothes and to donate a gold coin.

Money raised will go towards purchasing computer software for the School.

Thank you,

Mrs Emily Taylor - Social Service Co-ordinator

After School Care

Any parent who wishes to send their son to the After School Care must have already handed in the purple form for Terms One and Two. It is important the After School Care Unit has contact details.

If a parent is sending their son on a casual basis, could they please let either the After School Care Unit or the Junior School Office know on the specific day.

Re-Enactment Day Thursday 22 March 2001

Well done and congratulations to the Re-Enactment Day Committee! It was a fun and terrific day, turning the clock back 150 years to a school day in the 1850's! The wide range of Re-Enactment activities kept boys, parents and visitors well entertained despite the weather, and the marvellous display of 'Turn of the Century' costumes certainly added to the atmosphere of the day. The sausage sizzle was enjoyed by the boys - judging from the number of sausages we had to barbeque!

Thankyou to all the parents who helped out at the various stalls. We do have a fantastic parent and school community. I thankyou for your constant participation and high spirits.

Farewell Morning Tea - Mr Rod Carson

As we all know, Rod Carson will be taking up a new position at Tranby College in Western Australia and leaving Scotch College at the end of Term One. The JSPA is hosting Morning Tea to bid farewell to Rod, his wife, Samantha, and his son, Brent. Please do join the JSPA committee for a cup of tea/coffee with Rod, Samantha and young Brent to say goodbye and best wishes for the future. Details of the morning tea are as follows:

Date: Wednesday 28 March
Time 8.30 am to 10.00 am
Venue: Junior School Staff Room

RSVP - 26 March. Phone Sally at the Junior School Office 9810 4236

Highland Gathering - JSPA Scottish Provisions Stall

Please look for your Highland Gathering Kit in your son's school bag today. Since this Scottish Food Stall is one of our major fundraisers for the year, it would be wonderful if you could make/contribute something, and if you are going away, you can drop your 'Scottish provision' off early at the Junior School Office or on the verandah of Joan Fowles' house at 22 Berkeley St, Hawthorn 3122.

We are also in need of helpers to serve at the 'JSPA Scottish Provisions Stall'. Please ring Gabrielle Goldsmith on 9822 9995 if you are available to help out, even half an hour would be great! Thankyou so much. It should be another fantastic day as part of our 150 anniversary celebrations.

Mothers' Day Luncheon

Don't forget the lunch coming up on 11 May. Invitations will be sent out shortly. In the meantime,

please contact Jo Wormald on 9818 4572 if you are able to donate a prize (no matter how small or large)

for the fundraising activities on the day. As always, your support is very much appreciated and is vital to the success of these functions.

Last but not least, to everyone who is attending the grand 'Dinner on the Main' on Saturday 24 March 2001, I look forward to sharing with you in a magnificent evening - a landmark event celebrating the school's 150 anniversary. See you there!

Alice Chan - President, JSPA
