From The Head of the Junior School

I trust the many Junior School parents and friends who attended Dinner on the Main on Saturday night enjoyed the night as much as my wife, Jo, and I did. What a wonderful night of celebration and entertainment it was. I was delighted to see such tremendous support from the Junior School community.

This will surely be an event that we will all remember and I have no doubt that for a number of dads, this will have been the only opportunity they will ever get to kick a 'footy' on the main oval!

It has fortunately been a much quieter week for the boys and I know the staff have been grateful for this. The boys of Year Five returned today from a very successful camp and I look forward to hearing more about the week's activities. Also this week, Year Six participated in a session on 'Leadership' presented by Graham Hyman from 'Youth Specialities" in Queensland. Year Six boys and staff are also to be commended on their most informative 'Great Scot Biography' afternoon tea on Thursday. Many notable members of the College community joined together in the Assembly Hall, where the boys of Year Six were the hosts.

Next week, boys from Years Three to Six will participate in their House Swimming Carnivals. Details of these events can be found elsewhere in this newsletter and parents and friends are always welcome to come along and cheer for their favourite House.

Last Sunday, we were saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs Wyatt's father after a long illness. Mrs Wyatt has spent the week with her family in Adelaide, and I know the Junior School community join me in extending deepest sympathy to the Wyatt family.

Mrs Emily Taylor (3T) was due to commence maternity leave at the end of the term, however under medical advice, she has been forced to finish this week. I thank Mrs Taylor for all her hard work and wish her and Rohan well for the exciting times ahead, we can now officially welcome Mrs Annmarie Cowley to the staff. Mrs Cowley will be with us until the end of 2002 and I look forward to the many contributions she will make during her time with us.

My theme for this week has been Unity.

The boys were reminded that each one of us is a member of God's universe and that we should welcome the differences that each one of us brings to the world and our community. They were encouraged not to support prejudice, to be peacemakers and to care for the earth and all living things. By uniting together, we can bring great strength and unity, as designed and intended, by God, our creator.

My thought for the week....

[Jesus' prayer] "That they all may be one; as thou, Father,
art in me, and I in thee, that they may also be one in us:
that the world may believe that thou has sent me."

(John 17:21)

JSPA

The school oval was magically transformed into a glittering and most glamorous venue for the Dinner on the Main last Saturday evening. It was a memorable and truly splendid evening for all who were there to celebrate the landmark event of Scotch's 150 anniversary! We could have danced all night........ There are more 150 functions to come throughout the year, so please look up the 150 Celebrations Programme of Events and do join in the celebrations! The next highlight is the Highland Gathering on Saturday, 7 April with pipe bands from Australia and New Zealand, Highland Dancing, Fireworks and, of course, our JSPA Scottish Provisions Stall. It should be a fantastic day! The stall is a major fundraiser for the JSPA, so please drop your Scottish food off at Hawthorn or simply bring it with you on the day. There are still time slots available for mums, dads and grandparents to help serve at the stall on the day, so please ring Gabrielle Goldsmith on 9822 9995 if you are interested. As there are so many events being run this year, the JSPA will NOT be holding the annual social evening which was marked for the 23 June 2001. For those wishing to get together to enjoy the company of other Scotch parents for an evening out, there is a Gala Literary Dinner on Friday, 17 August 2001 which you may like to attend.

The JSPA will still hold our very popular Mothers' Day Luncheon as mentioned in previous newsletters. Invitations will go out with next week's newsletter to give you time to get your response back, preferably before school breaks up for the holidays. We are happy to seat you on a table of your indication/year level or you may like to form your own table of 10 people instead. You may like to bring your mother, mother in law or friend or simply come on your own.

We will also be having our Mothers' Day Stall on Tuesday, 8 May. The Mothers' Day Stall is a service the JSPA provides and not a fundraiser as such. The boys do so enjoy being able to buy a gift for Mum for Mothers' Day. If you or your business is able to source goods that we can sell at the Mothers' Day Stall, please phone Louise Tuckwell on 9819 0745. We would love to hear from you. Any help is greatly appreciated.

As Easter is during the school holidays, and also in view of the fact that we have requested your contribution towards the JSPA stall at the Highlands Gathering, there will not be a Hot Cross Bun Drive this year. However, Scotch Buns (with even more fruit than Hot Cross Buns) baked by Bakers Delight, Malvern will be available for purchase at our JSPA stall at the Highland Gathering.

The Easter Egg Guessing Competition which our boys have so much fun with will be held on Monday, 2 Tuesday, 3 and Wednesday, 4 April from 8.00 am to 8.30 am, as well as lunchtime. Each 'Guess' costs 20 cents or one may make 6 'Guesses' for $1.00. The Easter Egg Jar is at the Junior School Office.

I was pleased so many of you took the opportunity to say good-bye to Rod Carson, his wife, Samantha, and gorgeous little Brent at the Farewell Morning Tea last Wednesday. Rod Carson has been with us at Scotch College for 12 years. Although most of us would not have known Rod in his earlier years at Scotch, he has certainly earned our respect and admiration in the time we have known him and most certainly so in his role as Deputy Head of Junior School. I also wish to thank Rod on behalf of my predecessors and myself for the instrumental guidance, endless patience and great sense of humour he has provided us with in our role as Presidents. I also speak on behalf of JSPA committees past and present, as well as the general parent community, and thank Rod for all that he has so admirably helped us with. We bid Rod and his family farewell and all the best for the future. We hope to see the Carsons again very soon!

Junior Primary Chapel Service

A warm welcome is extended to all parents and friends to the Junior Primary Easter Chapel Service on Thursday, 5 April at 2.15 pm, in the Littlejohn Chapel. This will be the last Junior Primary Chapel Service for boys in Year Three, so parents of these boys are particularly welcome to join us.

Mrs Chris Robertson - Director of Junior Primary

Social Service

Today we were privileged to have as guests at our Assembly two students and other members of the Port Phillip Special School Community. Amelia and Morgan performed beautifully for us and the boys responded in kind with a moving rendition of 'The Tree Song.'

The appreciation of the gifts and talents of others was very evident as each group responded so warmly to the others' performance. It was indeed an uplifting and humble experience, leaving all who were there with a wonderful, warm glow which I'm sure will remain for a long time. A special thanks must go to Sam Cruickshanks and his parents for their part in arranging the visit.

We are hoping to maintain our connection with Port Phillip Special School through a visit by some of our boys to their school later in the year.

On Tuesday, 3 April we will be permitted to wear casual clothes on this day. The gold coin donation which the boys make for coming in casual clothes will go to the Port Phillip Special School, so that they can purchase much needed computer software.

I encourage everyone to get behind this very worthy cause.

Mrs Emily Taylor - Social Service Co-ordinator
