From The Head of the Junior School

A very busy week has passed and it has been a wonderful finish to a fantastic term in so many ways.

On Tuesday, it was a great thrill to see so many boys and staff getting into the spirit of our 'Casual Clothes Day', in order to raise funds for the Port Phillip Special School. I was overwhelmed by the generosity of our boys with just on $1000.00 being raised for these very special children. Proper arrangements will be made in order to present our cheque and I thank the Junior School boys and staff for making this project so successful.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, all boys in Years Three to Six competed admirably in their House Swimming sports. It was great to see all boys having a go and doing their best. Every one who competed is a winner and should feel very proud of his efforts. Whilst only one House can win the carnival, I do extend hearty congratulations to all boys. A special mention goes to Healey House who were declared the victors for 2001.

Yesterday, all boys participated in their final Chapel service for the term. With the focus on the real meaning of Easter, these times of worship provided an ideal opportunity to reflect on the death of Jesus and his resurrection. I encourage all families to take time over the coming Easter period to reflect on the real sacrifice that was made on our behalf.

Last Friday and Saturday, I attended a conference in Adelaide, which was hosted by Apple Australia. At this conference, I received on behalf of the school, a plaque acknowledging our selection as an 'Apple Distinguished School'. This honour enables our staff to gain access to higher levels of professional development, access to other schools that are also doing wonderful things with Technology, regular contact with latest developments and, importantly, a more thorough use of our own technologies in order that the boys get the most out of our IT programme.

During the week, I was pleased to present 'Monitor' badges to many Year Six boys who have demonstrated leadership, responsibility and reliability in the Library or Art Departments.

In today's Assembly, we said 'good-bye' to Mr Rodney Carson. Mr Carson has been at Scotch since 1990 and has been a wonderful contributor across such a variety of areas, none more so than during his time as Deputy Head. As the saying goes, "All good things must come to an end", and with this in mind, Mr Carson leaves with every best wish from the Junior School community. I know that he is looking forward to the many challenges ahead and that he is also looking forward to many visitors from the East!

To Rodney, Samantha and Brent: thank you, good-bye, good luck and may God hold you each in the palm of his hand.

As the Easter period approaches and we enjoy special times with our families, I leave you with the following passages from the Bible….

"For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone
who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. For God did not send
his Son to be its judge, but to be its saviour." (John 3:16-17)

Wishing you all a very Happy Easter and a refreshing vacation.

Artists record our history

'Federation' is an exhibition that explores artists' interpretations of history and includes work that influenced ordinary Australians. The Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen is the first stop for the travelling exhibition which marks 100 years of Federation.

This exhibition is most suitable for Junior School boys and I feel it would be a great place to visit over the holidays. There is a large park at Heide with sculptures set in a bush setting. The 'Federation' Exhibition continues until May 13th.

There are over 60 parents and grandparents who help in the Art room with Prep, Year 1, 2, and 3 Art classes. This is a outstanding contribution to the overall Art program for the boys and is greatly appreciated by the staff.

The 150th Mosaic Garden project will commence in Term Two, so any remaining tiles need to be brought in quickly next term if they are to be used in this special project. Thankyou to all parents who have donated tiles to this major artistic construction.

Mrs. Susan Ferres - Head of Art and Craft.

The boys had lots of fun guessing the number of eggs in the jar. Congratulations to Max van den Broek in 4K and Adam Brown 2C who shared first prize. There were 258 eggs in the jar! Richard Tuckwell 3W, Edward Goldsmith 1R, Charlie Gamboni 5W, Simon Black 5W and Nicholas Tissot 2M won consolation prizes. Well done boys.

Mothers' Day Stall

This stall is coming up on 8 May. We have many appealing items for the boys to buy for Mum and it would be wonderful to have some help with the wrapping of these gifts. We will be holding working bees on Thursday 26 April and Wednesday 2 May from 8.30 am in the Ramsay Room.

If you are able to help for an hour or two on either of these mornings, please phone Louise Tuckwell on 9819 0745.

Mothers' Day Luncheon

Invitations to the Mothers' Day Luncheon are attached to this week's newsletter. I do hope most mothers will take the opportunity to celebrate the well-deserved luncheon we have organised for you. Please do get your replies back to us early to facilitate with catering. Feel free to bring your mother or friend, or come on your own.

If you wish to organise your own table of 10, please appoint a table captain, who is then responsible for booking. Please note if you want to park in the restaurant complex, a $5.00 parking fee applies. Street parking should also be available. We have received some fabulous donations of prizes and vouchers. Further donations would be much appreciated. Telephone Jo Wormald on 9818 4572
