From The Head of the Junior School
Welcome back to Term Two and I trust all boys and their families enjoyed a refreshing Easter vacation, especially after such a hectic start to the school year. Whilst there are a number of activities planned for this term, we do at last, have an opportunity to draw a little breath!
Staffing
I extend a special welcome to Mrs Cheryl Harrison who married Mr Kevin Harrison, over the holidays. Year Two boys will know that I speak of Ms McBride!
Cheryl and Kevin were married just before Easter and I know the school community joins me in congratulating and wishing them both, every future happiness.
We also welcome Mrs Gillian Comport, who will be working each morning in the Access Unit and Mrs Helen Taylor, who will be teaching some Literature periods in the Library. Mr Sampson is Acting Deputy Head and I encourage parents to feel free in contacting Mr Sampson in the usual way if needed.
Deputy Head
After a detailed and lengthy process, I am pleased to advise parents that the search for our new Deputy Head has now been finalised. Mr Rod McKinlay has been appointed Deputy Head of the Junior School from the beginning of Term Three 2001 and joins us from St Leonard's College in Brighton. Mr McKinlay is married to Kerrie and has a two-year-old daughter, Caitlyn.
I was overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of applications received for this position and the interview and subsequent selection process has been extremely difficult. As such, I look forward to welcoming the McKinlay's to the College and to the contribution Rod will make in this important role.
Boys
On the last day of last term, I presented badges to the Class Captains for Term Two.
Congratulations boys
Today I was pleased to present badges of office to our new School Officers for this term. Parents may recall, that this year, each Year Six boy will be given this opportunity to develop his own leadership skills and service to the school community.
Congratulations to:
Congratulations are also extended to Maurice Clayton (5Y), who was recently awarded two trophies by the Southern Districts and Churches Cricket Association. Maurice attained awards for the 'Most Wickets' and the 'Best Bowling Average'. Maurice also represented his district in the Mitchell Shield competition and plays in the U12A's with the Toorak Cricket Club. Well done, Maurice!
I am always pleased to hear of boys' achievements in activities outside of the school and would be delighted to share their successes in our Newsletter. I encourage parents or boys to drop me a note outlining details and I will then be able to communicate these to our school community.
On Tuesday of next week, Prep to Six will come together for a whole school photo to commemorate our 150th Year. I urge parents to ensure boys are in correct uniform (as always!).
Theme for the Week
Our focus this week has been reflecting on the sacrifices made on our behalf by veterans of so many wars, but none more so than World War 1. On Tuesday, Prep to Six gathered for an Assembly where we heard briefly the ANZAC story, heard a poem from an old digger and gave thanks through prayer for the lives that were so tragically lost. A minute's silence was observed and we concluded with the singing of our National Anthem. I encouraged every boy to take their own time on Wednesday to reflect and give personal thanks for the freedom we enjoy today. It is through understanding and appreciation by the youth of today, that the tradition of ANZAC Day will be carried forward into future generations. I also extend thanks to the School Captain and Vice Captains for their presentations during our special Assembly.
My thought for the week is the 'The Ode', taken from the poem titled 'For the Fallen', written by Laurence Binyon in 1914, which has been used in association with commemoration services in Australia since 1921.
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Guy B. Mason

JSPA
Hello and welcome back to Term Two. Hope everyone had a good Easter and a pleasant break over the school holidays.
Before I move on to the JSPA activities in Term Two, Gabriel Goldsmith (Highland Gathering JSPA Stall Convenor) and I would like to thank everyone who donated goodies, who helped at the working bees and who worked on the stall at the Highland Gathering. If was a fun day with 12 bands competing - our JSPA stall was a popular one with the crowd.
Mothers' Day Stall
As announced earlier, the JSPA will be holding its annual Mothers' Day Stall on Tuesday, 8 May. Thanks to all the helpful Mums who turned up on Thursday at Louise Tuckwell's house to wrap the Mothers' Day Stall gifts. Louise Tuckwell and Janie Sinclair have sourced truly charming merchandise for the stall and the boys have a delightful range of beautiful gifts to choose from.
We will also need some help on the day (Tuesday 8 May) between 8.30am and 12.30pm. This is a lovely job helping the boys choose presents for their mothers and grandmothers. Please phone Joan Fowles anytime on 9818 7491 if you have an hour or so to spare on that morning.
Mothers' Day Luncheon
I hope most of you will attend our Mothers' Day Luncheon. Past JSPA Mothers' Day Luncheon celebrations have been very popular and enjoyable. This year's should once again be pleasant and relaxing in the stylish surroundings of the Fenix restaurant, overlooking the river. There are lots of great prizes to be won thanks to the generosity of everyone who has kindly donated these terrific prizes! So please do get your replies back to us early to secure your mum/mother-in-law and/or yourself a seat quick!
