From The Head of the Junior School

"It's a girl!"

I am pleased to advise parents and friends that Emily and Rohan Taylor are the proud parents of a beautiful daughter, who arrived safely last Saturday, arriving some four weeks early. I know the whole community joins me in welcoming, 'Alice Elizabeth Taylor' and also in wishing the new parents every best wish for the future.

Congratulations are also extended to David Ngan (4K), who recently competed at the 'Dandenong Festival of Music and Art for Youth'. David's talents earned him a first place award in 'Pianoforte Solo' for 9 Years and Under; third place in the 10 Years and Under, and an 'Encouragement Award' in the 12 Years and Under. Well done, David!

Congratulations to the following Year 6 boys who were premiers for the 2000/2001 season in the Under 12 Cricket Team with the Glen Iris United Cricket Club: Andrew Clowes, David Derham, Stuart George, Mark Rattray, Edward Ripper and James W. The team received the Premiership Flag and shield at The Eastern Cricket Association presentation evening at the Hawthorn Town Hall.

On Tuesday, the Junior School assembled on the oval for a commemorative photograph. Photographs and details will be available later in the term, however, a visit to the Junior School Web site will give you a sneak preview! I congratulate the boys on the way they cooperated with staff and the photographer.

On Wednesday, I was pleased to welcome some 50 Heads of other independent Junior Schools and many of their Deputies, for a special meeting and professional development at Scotch. The school was well presented and I thank our very talented staff for their efforts. I was so proud to receive feedback from our guests who made comments such as, "You can 'feel' that this classroom is an exciting environment and you can see it, too!" We have so much to be thankful for in our teachers, as it is they that make the school what it is, not the buildings or resources - these things just make their jobs a little easier!

My theme for the week has been "Self discipline". Whilst we have not displayed our weekly theme on the regular sheet (an oversight on my part!!), I did remind the boys that practising self discipline means you step back from your emotions so that they don't control you; you speak and act calmly when you are hurt or angry; you get things done in an orderly and efficient manner, by creating routines for yourself; you do what is expected without having to be reminded; and you agree to do things on time.

The Bible tells us in Paul's letter to the Hebrews, "Discipline, to be sure, is never pleasant; at times it seems painful, but afterwards those who have been trained by it reap the harvest of a peaceful and upright life." (12:11). This is especially true when focussing on the self.

My thought for the week....

"If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. It's the hard that makes it great."

Art

The special project the '150th Mosaic Garden' has commenced this week. Ms Michelle Newman has been working with Year 3 and Year 4 boys, who have commenced making their mosaic tiles.

Boys have been breaking tiles into small pieces and arranging these tile pieces into different designs. This project will continue during Terms 2 and 3.

If any parents have tiles at home, please send them now to the Art room so they can be used in this special project. I am also collecting margarine, ice cream and large yoghurt containers for the boys to use in their tile pieces.

Thank you to all parents who have supported this project so far.
