G B Mason

From The Head of the Junior School

What a busy week it has been across the Junior School. Several classes have enjoyed various excursions and all boys have been involved in tree planting in the school grounds. We have almost completed the planting of 2000 trees and it won't be long before we plant and commemorate the 2001st! Stay tuned for further details.

On Wednesday, we were pleased to welcome Mr Petro Georgiou, the Federal Member for Kooyong, and the Principal, Dr Donaldson, to a special Assembly. Mr Georgiou spoke to the boys about Federation and presented commemorative medallions to the School Captain, Christopher Hey, and David Thompson, who represented the boys of the Junior Primary. Each boy then received his own medallion throughout the course of the day.

I trust that the boys will treasure this memento and whilst its significance may not mean a lot at the moment, I am confident that in the years to come, this will become a valued possession for most boys.

On Thursday, boys in Years Three to Six participated in their first 'House Chapel' for the year. Lead by the boys and staff of Healey House, the theme of 'Love' was shared, and I extend congratulations to Miss Arter and her House leaders for a memorable service of worship.

Today, over 90 grandparents and special friends shared a very special morning in the Prep Unit. Activities based around Art, Physical Education, Music and in the Classroom were shared across the generations and thoroughly enjoyed by all. It is always difficult to tell who enjoys these mornings the most - the boys or the grandparents!!

Boy News

Congratulations are extended to the following boys who have been selected to represent the APS, as well as themselves and their school, at the Metropolitan Regional sporting trials to be held shortly:

Jimmy Jewitt (6D) has been selected to trial for the Victorian Primary Schools Sporting Association's Soccer team, and Daniel Parisi (6P) and Andrew Earle (6P) have been selected to trial for the Victorian Primary Schools Sporting Association's AFL team.

We wish these three very capable sportsmen every best wish as they seek representation at State level.

Last weekend, James Gould (4M) competed at an Interschool Equestrian Event held at Sacred Heart College in Kyneton. Competing against 35 other riders and representing Scotch in the Grade Five division, James was awarded 'Individual 3rd place' covering the 'Combined Training and Dressage' test, and the 'Show Jumping' course. This is a wonderful achievement and I extend congratulations to James on his excellent performance.

On 12 and 13 May, David Tuckwell (6G) sang in the 'Centenary of Federation Choir' which performed 'Mahler's Symphony No. 8' with Markus Stenz who was conducting the 'Melbourne Symphony Orchestra'. The concerts were held at the Royal Exhibition Building to sell-out audiences of over 3000 at each performance! Well done to a very talented young man.

I would also like to wish the boys and staff the best of luck for their upcoming Music Tour to Adelaide from 22 to the 25 May. I look forward to visiting St Peters College next Thursday

My theme for this week has been Tolerance.

I reminded the boys that being tolerant involves being open to differences in others; respecting the opinions of others' when they differ from your own; forgiving instead of holding a grudge; overlooking people's faults and asking God to help you accept the things that you cannot change.

The boys were then left with the following text from Paul's letter to the Colossians:

"Be tolerant with one another and forgiving, if any of you has cause
for complaint: you must forgive as the Lord forgave you." (3:13)

My thought for the week,

Remember the 3 R's:

Respect for self;
Respect for others;
Responsibility for all of your actions.

Educational Support Services

If your child is currently participating in the THRASS (Teaching Handwriting, Reading and Spelling Skills) programme as part of his Educational Support spelling sessions, we would like to extend an invitation to you to visit the Access Unit at some stage during the following Parent/Teacher Interview evenings.

The times are as follows:

Tuesday, 12 June 4.00 - 5.30pm 6.30 - 8.00pm

Monday, 18 June 4.00 - 5.30pm 6.30 - 8.00pm

You will have the opportunity to view, listen to and use the THRASS resources that are used by the boys in their sessions. This allows you to develop a greater understanding of your son's experiences, as we fully encourage your involvement in his learning process.

We look forward to meeting you during one of these evenings and answering any questions pertaining to the THRASS programme. Please note, this is not for the purposes of a parent/teacher interview, however, you may wish to make an appointment with us to discuss your son's progress for a later date.

Mothers of all ages were swept off their feet by the wonderful singing of Richard Thomas on a perfect Melbourne autumn day by the Yarra River at the Mothers' Day Luncheon last Friday. More than 100 people walked away with a lucky prize - some people with two or more!

Thank you so very much to the individuals and businesses (in particular within the school community) who most generously donated the fabulous prizes for the day. Thank you also to the people who helped source the prizes! Such a successful function would not have been possible without the overwhelming support from everyone, including each and every person who came along and celebrated the well deserved Mothers' Day Luncheon with us! Many thanks to all.

Next on the JSPA agenda is an information lecture on 'The Internet, the Scotch Intranet and Your Child'. Pleae note that this lecture is on Tuesday 5 June, not 22 May, as originally scheduled.

This lecture is sponsored by the JSPA. Your child's use of the internet and the intranet is relevant to all of us, so please come along if this topic is of interest to you as parents. A flyer is attached to this newsletter.

As per last week's newsletter Don McClean has kindly proposed a Father and Son Tennis Evening on Friday, 25 May at the Kooyong Tennis Club. It should be a fun evening for fathers and sons, so please let Don McClean know (Ph 9853 7553 or via the JSPA box) if you would like to partake in the tennis evening he is putting together.

Congratulations to Andrew Earle and Daniel Parisi (football) and Ashley Lim and Jimmy Jewitt (Soccer) who played in the APS Combined teams against teams from the Northern, Central and Eastern Yarrra zones of the VPSSA.

Andrew, Daniel and Jimmy have been invited to the next round of metropolitan zone trials. Good luck boys.

On Wednesday, we had some fabulous results at the APS Cross Country Championships held at Carey, Bulleen.

The top 6 placegetters automatically qualify for the State Championships at Bundoora Park in June. Well done to all boys.
