From The Head of the Junior School

Welcome back to the staff and boys who have spent most of the week in Adelaide on our annual Music Exchange with St Peter's College.

Four days of music, friendship and fun was shared and I was extremely proud of the way in which every boy represented himself, his family and his school. In next week's Newsletter, Music Captain, Thomas Gin, will provide a more complete account of the tour.

Music continues to be a focus with Year Three to Six recitals being held on Tuesday and Thursday of next week. These recitals provide a wonderful opportunity for boys of every standard to perform for an audience. Good luck to all boys who are making their final preparations for their big performance!

A film crew from Channel Seven was at the College yesterday taping a segment to be featured on 'The Game'. Trent Croad, from the Hawthorn Football Club, was involved and was able to stay behind after taping to speak with some of our young footballers, who will appear in the background of the segment. Look out for this tonight.

Boy News

Congratulations are extended to Daniel Qi (4K) who was awarded second place in the City of Boroondara Eisteddfod for 'Recitation'. Daniel shared his performance with the school at our Assembly this morning and it is clear that Daniel is a very talented young man.

Staff News

I regretfully advise parents that Miss Belinda Colaneri (Physical Education) has advised me of her resignation from the College at the end of this term in order to take up a position at Melbourne Girls' Grammar School. Whilst we are disappointed to be losing a wonderful young teacher, I am pleased for Belinda who has obtained a position that will provide advancement opportunities in her career. She leaves the College with our every best wish for continued success in the future. Applications are currently being received for a replacement teacher.

My theme for the week has been Kindness. I encouraged the boys to be kind by looking for little ways in which they can help others, to show kindness to all they meet and to do all they can to help the environment. Boys were also encouraged to practise random acts of kindness on unsuspecting people!

My thought for the week….

If you were arrested for being kind, would there be enough evidence to convict you?

Chat Rooms, Cyber Space and Your Child - Tuesday 5 June

The above lecture was advertised last week and the response has been very good. Most of us are familiar with the World Wide Web (WWW) which we think of as the 'Internet'.

Scotch College is targeting a fully operational Intranet (being the network and applications that have the same 'look and feel' as the Web based Internet applications but are private and internal to Scotch and inaccessible outside of Scotch) by 2002 whereby each person in Scotch will have a user login.

The JSPA has invited three speakers who are at the forefront of Internet Technology as an educational tool to address us. The issues of use and abuse of the powerful tools available to your child are relevant to all of us. Please take this opportunity to hear and to discuss these issues.

Your reservation will assist the JSPA in providing a seat for you.
