G B Mason

From The Head of the Junior School

Congratulations are extended to every boy who represented Scotch during the Adelaide Music Tour last week. Thomas Gin, Junior School Music captain, has provided a detailed report attached to this Newsletter and I commend it to you.

Today saw 125 Junior School students from all parts of Melbourne but predominantly from Wesley, Strathcona and Scotch join together for the Scotch College Suzuki Workshop. In the morning, the students participated in tutorial and repertoire classes catering for their individual level of achievement. All students then came together in the afternoon to perform for the Prep - Year 3 boys and guests. Congratulations to all concerned on a wonderful experience.

Next week will see music continuing to flourish with a series of recitals being held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. These recitals were previously calendared for this week, however, due to unforeseen circumstances, they have been moved to next week. Apologies are extended for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Congratulations are also extended to Mr Matthew Dickinson, the staff and boys from Bradshaw House who lead an inspiring Chapel on Thursday. With the appropriate theme of 'Talented People', each boy was encouraged to accept each person as an individual and recognise that everyone has special abilities that are to be admired. This service was most meaningful and a wonderful way to start our school day.

Next Tuesday evening will see the annual JSPA lecture. This year the topic will be, 'Chat Rooms, Cyber Space and Your Child - home computer use and the new Scotch College Intranet.' This is set to be a most informative evening and will involve three presenters, covering everything you will need to know about the Internet, our Intranet and possible uses of these powerful tools. A lot of time and effort has been given to the organisation of this lecture and I encourage as many families as possible to be represented and become more informed about the technologies available to you. Further details can be obtained from the attached flier.

Boy News

Congratulations are extended to:

Christopher Tham (4I) who achieved a perfect score on his Grade Two Music Theory Exam;

Steven Stamopoulos (4M) who achieved an 'A+' in his Grade 5 Pianoforte exam and an 'A' in his Grade 2 Violin exam and also earned 1st place in the '10 years and under Piano Solo' at the Boroondara Eisteddfod;

Harry Borthwick (4I), David Derham (6D), Thomas Caldwell (6G) and Stuart Watson (6G), who have all earned the right to trial for the VPSSA hockey team next Monday;

Jimmy Jewitt (6D) who will face a final selection trial for the Victorian Primary Schools' soccer team on 14 June, Jonathan Chow (2H)who will be doing his Grade 1 pianoforte exam and Daniel Parisi (6P) who faces final trials for the Victorian Primary Schools' AFL team.

These are all fantastic achievements and I am delighted to be able to share this news with our community.

Next Friday sees the annual 'Prep to Three Footy Day.' Family and friends are more than welcome to share in this long awaited morning, which will commence at 11.00am on the lower ovals in the Senior School.

On Monday, Mr John Trellor from the Multiple Sclerosis Society visited our Assembly and outlined this year's M-S Read-a-thon. This is an optional social service activity for boys, however, it has been well supported in previous years and I encourage boys to give this cause their consideration. Registration forms can be obtained from Mrs Cowley or via the Internet.

My thought for the week....

Do not undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others.
It is because we are different that each of us is special.

Art

Many classes have been involved in designing and constructing mosaic tiles for the Scotch 150 Year Mosaic Garden, planned to be installed in the Junior School this year.

Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 boys have made clay tiles based on the graphic of the Scotch College school crest. Year 3 and 4 boys have made mosaic tiles in the shape of a range of Australian animals. They also have made mosaic trivets to take home at the end of the project, as their animal tile will become part of the mosaic garden. All tiles will be grouted next term, after every boy has completed his personal tile.

Year 5 boys have just started making their decoration for the bird bath. They are using the indirect method of mosaics, where the tiles are glued onto muslin that later can be attached to the bird bath and bent around a shape. The Year 6 boys have been working on a large burning bush. This one metre square mosaic piece incorporates glass and ceramic tile pieces and uses the Scotch colours: bright reds and yellow for the flames; and blue for the background.

Ms. Newman, Artist in Residence, has worked with Mrs Ferres and all Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 boys to develop their various mosaic projects. As part of the process of developing the boys' awareness of possible art forms, Ms Newman has shared a number of her mixed media sculptures with the boys.

In addition, I ask parents to collect ice cream and any other plastic containers for projects in the Art Room.

Adelaide Music Tour - 2001

After months of preparation and hard work, especially by Mr Sampson and Miss Allen, it was finally happening. About 100 Junior School boys, accompanied by Scotch teachers and music staff, boarded the buses to commence our Adelaide music exchange. This year, it was our turn to visit. We hosted St Peter's last year, and those of us who had had billets were looking forward to seeing our friends again.

We felt excited as we waved goodbye to our parents. This was going to be a bit different from a school excursion or camp. At the airport, several of us innocently set off the alarm when we stepped through the security check. Was it the pens we carried, the wallets, watches, keys, puffers, or the leadership badges of the Year Six boys?

Fortunately, we were mostly waved through. Everything went smoothly on our flight and we were fed drinks and snacks. Some of us were even allowed into the cockpit to see the pilot.

After a relaxing visit to the Adelaide Zoo, we arrived at St Peter's College to meet our host families. There were smiles, introductions and handshakes all around. Before long, we were making ourselves at home in our new environment. This was easy to do as they made us feel very welcome. It was fun living with another family and experiencing how they go about things.

Wednesday 23 May

The Junior School Choir, Concert Band, Drum Corp, String Orchestra and several soloists, including Stuart Watson and myself, performed first at Seymour College in the morning and then at Pembroke College in the afternoon. It was a busy day and our performances went well.

Thursday 24 May

This was a full day at St Peter's. There were combined rehearsals for Choir, Band and Orchestra to prepare for our concert in the afternoon. The trumpets, trombones, oboes, flutes, percussion and clarinets, etc. had separate rehearsals before coming together for the combined band. The Choir had their own part and combined rehearsals, and so did the strings. Everybody was kept very busy and it was exciting working with other musicians who were also of a high standard. After the rehearsals, the instruments had to be organised in the Memorial Hall where the concert was to be held. Then it was our lunch break. Energised by a tasty sausage lunch, we felt ready to perform at our best. The concert was well attended by parents and friends, including some Scotch families. One of the highlights was a student's xylophone solo, 'The Ghost of John'. At a particular point in the music, Tom Maddison pushed open the double base case, stood up and rattled his chain, much to the audience's delight! Naturally, the piece was renamed 'The Ghost of Tom'!

Before long, it was time to say our goodbyes and head for home. The tour was a very successful and one, which we all enjoyed very much. Most of us had the experience of living with another family, learning how to organise ourselves, and being independent. We also made new friends and learned to work together with other musicians to achieve something. The opportunity to perform for others was special.

As Music Captain, on behalf of all the boys, I would like to thank Miss Allen, Mr Sampson and all those involved in making this tour possible for us. I would also like to congratulate everyone who performed.

Thomas Gin - Music Captain
