Parent teacher interviews

8 June 2001 No. 17From The Head of the Junior SchoolWell another busy week has concluded and teachers have now finalised their interim Reports for 2001 and look forward to the Parent/Teacher Interviews scheduled over the next week or so. This process involves an enormous amount of work and I commend the teaching staff to you for not only the time but also the effort, that goes into ensuring each report is a fair reflection of how each boy is progressing. I remind parents that you should arrive some 15 minutes before your scheduled interview, in order to collect and read your son's report. Each interview will last just under 15 minutes and if further time is required, a mutually convenient time will then be arranged. Specialist teachers will also be available to meet with parents. Congratulations are extended to Year Three who presented a wonderful concert to families and friends on Tuesday. "Rolf's Liederkalender" was presented entirely in German and led by 25 solo performers, who were backed by all of Year Three. Drama was added to complement the singing, and a variety of costumes, props and masks all contributed to a memorable occasion. I extend sincere thanks to Mr Walker, Mrs Cowley, Miss Allen, Mrs Piggin, Mr Clarke, Mr Robertson and Mrs Richardson for their efforts with Year Three. I also extend congratulations to all boys who performed in the Music Recitals held over the previous two nights. These recitals provide a wonderful opportunity for boys to perform in a nonthreatening environment and to a real audience! Well done to all! Our Prep to Year Three footballers enjoyed their annual 'Footy Day' this morning. It was great to see so many boys enjoying their sport and so well supported by family and friends. I again thank the staff for the enormous amount of extra time devoted to organising this special event. The JSPA Lecture was extremely well supported on Tuesday evening and I trust those who attended found the session informative. We are planning some small follow up sessions early next term, where parents will be able to go 'on-line' whilst assisted by staff. Stay tuned for further details. Boy NewsCongratulations to Jonathan Wilcox (6D) and Christopher Baker (6G) who were both awarded an "A" on their Grade 1 Bassoon exams. This is a very complex instrument to play and it is great to see two young men really enjoying this challenge. Congratulations are also extended to Stuart Watson (6G) who was awarded a mark of 98 on his Grade 4 Music Theory Exam. Daniel Parisi (6P) has been selected in the final squad of 30 players to be trialled for the VPSSA AFL side. Daniel will face final selections tomorrow and I extend best wishes to him. Stuart Watson (6G) and Harry Borthwick (4I) have both earned a place in the next round of selection for the VPSSA Hockey squad and I wish both boys well for their next round. My theme for this week has been Purposefulness. The boys were encouraged to act with purpose; to set clear goals and objectives; concentrate on what is most important and to rely on God's help to accomplish great things. Acting purposefully can help to achieve just about anything. My thought for the week…. You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try.Guy B. MasonParent Teacher InterviewsParent Teacher Interviews will be conducted on Tuesday, 12 June, Thursday, 14 June and Monday, 18 June. All parents should have received a specific time for an interview with the class teacher. Prior to this interview, the written report and portfolios for Prep-4 will be available from the Junior School Assembly Hall. Please allow 15 minutes to read these before your interview. We look forward to this opportunity to communicate with you and hope that it will be of benefit to all concerned. Brian Sampson - Acting Deputy Head Educational SupportThis is a reminder to parents whose children are currently participating in the THRASS (Teaching Handwriting, Reading and Spelling Skills) programme as part of their Educational Support spelling sessions. We would like to extend an invitation to you to visit the Access Unit at some stage during the following Parent/Teacher Interview evenings. The times are as follows:
**Note the inclusion of Thursday afternoon and evening sessions and the exclusion of Monday's late evening session. You will have the opportunity to view, listen to and use the THRASS resources that are used by the boys in their sessions. This allows you to develop a greater understanding of your son's experiences, as we fully encourage your involvement in his learning process. We look forward to meeting you during one of these evenings and answering any questions pertaining to the THRASS programme. Please note, this is not for the purposes of a parent/teacher interview. Access Reports will be mailed to you in the last week of Term Two. Should you wish to discuss your son's progress, please do not hesitate to make an appointment with the appropriate teacher in Term Three.
Marcia Bacon -Director of Educational Support,
SportGood luck to Henry Dick, Angus Harlock, Sebastian Woodard, Anthony Bordonaro, Jad Hamzi and Stuart Watson who will be running in the Victorian Primary Schools State Cross Country Championships at Bundoora Park on Tuesday, 12 June. Netball
Scotch has five mixed year level netball teams, who rotate each week. Cross CountryAll boys competed at Caulfield Grammar Wheelers Hill. Stuart Watson 3rd, Will Lester 8th, Edward Keating 9th, David Tuckwell 16th, Harrison Wilcox 23rd. Well done to all teams. We look forward to next week's games. Peter Hawkins - Head of Junior School Sport Cordner-Eggleston CupWith the Cordner-Eggleston Luncheon, Match and Sculpture Unveiling August 3 will be an important day, not only because of the traditional Scotch College/Melbourne Grammar School match for the Cordner-Eggleston Cup, but also because it provides an opportunity for an event which will be significant in Melbourne's commemoration of the Centenary of Federation. It also contributes to the 150th Anniversary celebrations of Scotch College's foundation in 1851. Thanks to the most extensive and generous support of past footballers of Scotch and Melbourne Grammar, and the parents and friends of both Schools, a special Football Sculpture has been commissioned as a Centenary of Federation Gift to the people of Victoria. The SculptureThe Sculpture will be of bronze, and will stand 2.7 metres in height. Eminent Sculptor, Mr Louis Laumen, has created a significant work which will mark the birthplace or 'first footprint' of our great game of Australian Rules Football. The Sculpture will commemorate the first recorded game of Australian Rules Football, which was played between Scotch and Grammar on Saturday, 7 August 1858. Prominently sited near the Gallery of Sport, the Sculpture will become a key part of the historic presentation walks carried out by the MCC guides for international, interstate, intrastate and local visitors. There is no doubt that the Sculpture will become a celebrated element of Victoria's sporting history. Invitation to Pre-Match LuncheonAn invitation to attend the pre-match luncheon at the Hilton Hotel on this day will be sent to parents of current senior teams of both schools, parents of selected players from the Junior School, donors to the Sculpture Appeal, team members from earlier school teams, Club 150 members and other involved parents and friends of the School. We expect a sell-out of over 480 and as numbers are limited, early booking is essential. Priority bookings will only be given to parents of players and donor captains for the Sculpture Appeal. All sections of the School Community are warmly invited to attend the Cordner-Eggleston Match at the MCG, which will commence at 2.20 pm, and the important unveiling of the Sculpture outside the Gallery of Sport at 5.30 pm. AFL Match Pass-Outs.The AFL match between Richmond and Collingwood will begin at 7.40 pm. Entry to the MCG will be on a special pass. Anyone leaving the ground to witness the unveiling must obtain a Pass Out if they wish to re-enter to see the AFL match. Timetable for the Day
Leigh McGregor - OSCA JSPAChat Rooms, Cyberspace and Your ChildThe forum last Tuesday evening on the Internet and the Scotch Intranet proved to be interesting and informative with healthy audience participation. A brief outline of the Scotch Junior School IT curriculum was covered. The attendees were also privileged to a sneak preview of the exciting Scotch Intranet that is targeted to go live in 2001. Various scenarios of primary school students using the Internet were presented, provoking enthusiastic discussion from the audience. If you missed the lecture and would like some simple guidelines for on-line behaviour, you may like to look up the Australian Government's Family website (www.aba.gov.au/family).
