29 June 2001 No. 20From Head of the Junior SchoolWell, another term has simply flown past and it seems extremely hard to believe that we are now half way through our very special year. Much has happened again this term and I encourage each boy to spend a few moments reflecting on all that has been achieved. The opportunity is presented to reflect on personal goals and reassess these for the second half of the year. For the boys of Year Six, the last six months of their primary education will continue to provide challenges and an opportunity, later in the year, to participate in a transition program into Year Seven. ProgramsCongratulations are extended to the boys of Years Five and Six for an outstanding concert last night. I am always impressed with the quality of music presented and this year was no exception. Special thanks go to Miss Allen, Mrs Piggin and the instrumental staff for their thorough preparation of the boys. The boys are also to be commended for committing to hectic rehearsal schedules, both at school and personally, in order to present a most entertaining night of music. The boys of Year Two presented wonderful displays of projects, costumes and food from various countries as they celebrated their annual International Food Day. Miss Carney and Mrs Harrison are to be commended on their organisation of this wonderful day and sincere thanks are extended to the many parents who gave up their time to assist during the day. Best wishes are extended to Year 6P who will be attending their annual camp to Lake Nihlacootie on their return next term. This camp is always a highlight for Year Six and I am confident that this year will prove no exception. I look forward to visiting the boys and hearing a complete report on their return. Congratulations to Matthew Goldsmith who achieved his blue belt (two stripes) in Taekwondo. He was also judged 'best on the day' in a recent competition. Staff NewsToday we sadly farewelled Miss Belinda Colaneri who has been teaching Physical Education since July 1999. Miss Colaneri will be transferring to Melbourne Girls' Grammar and she leaves with our thanks and every best wish for a successful career. Mrs Helen Taylor concludes her contract teaching Literature to several classes and I have been delighted with the way she so easily took over Mr Sampson's classes. Whilst Mrs Taylor will remain as our Library Assistant, I would sincerely like to thank her for her most valuable contribution in a very short time. Mrs Gillian Comport also concludes her brief contract in the Access Unit and has once again been a valued contributor in this important area. In thanking Mrs Comport, I am sure that we will see a lot more of her throughout the rest of the year. Mr Sampson concludes his term as Acting Deputy Head, as Mr McKinlay joins the staff from the beginning of next term. I have greatly valued Mr Sampson's efforts in what has been a very busy term. He has carried out the duties of Deputy Head and Director of Studies extremely professionally and I cannot commend his efforts highly enough to the school community. I am delighted to announce to parents that Mr Ian Leith has been appointed to replace Miss Colaneri as one of our teachers of Physical Education. Mr Leith joins us from Haileybury College where he has been Deputy Head and Director of Sport. Mr Leith is married to Carole and they have three sons, two of whom will be joining the Senior School next year. Due to unforseen difficulties, Mr Leith's starting date may be slightly delayed, as Haileybury seek a replacement. In the meantime, some minor timetable swaps have been made for the beginning of next term with Mr James Robertson taking these classes until Mr Leith is able to join the College. HolidaysThe end of the year will be on us sooner than we wish and I again encourage every boy to make the most of the opportunities that will be presented over the next six months. With a very busy Third Term ahead I wish all boys, families and members of staff a very happy and restful vacation. My final thought for the term……
When one door closes, another opens: "May the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way." ~ (2 Thessalonians 3:16) ~ Guy B Mason Year Two Thank you Maths ActivitiesDuring Term Two, the Year Two boys worked with parents on many hands on maths activities. The activities included cooking, 3D shapes, money, time, calculators, number patterns and measurement. The boys looked forward to every Day 3 with great enthusiasm. This programme would not have been possible without the regular support of parents. We would like to thank Ginny Light, Anne Webb, Alex Saliwonczyk, Jennifer Batrouney, Petrina Joyce, Robert Erskine and Margie Tissot for giving up their time to work with the boys. We would also like to thank all other parents who capably filled in as emergency helpers. Cheryl Harrison, Chris Carney and all Year Two boys Sport - Cordner-Eggleston CupFriday, 3 August will see the traditional Scotch College versus Melbourne Grammar School Australian Rules football match for the Cordner-Eggleston Cup to be played this year at the MCG. Finally a big thank you to Miss Colaneri for her contribution to the PE and Sport areas of the school. Best wishes to her for her time at Melbourne Girls Grammar. Peter Hawkins - Head of Junior School Sport JSPAParents and students value teachers' efforts but many of us seldom have a chance to publicly express our appreciation. This is our chance to do so - we can nominate a teacher for the Commonwealth Teachers Prizes for Excellence and the ASG Excellence in Teaching Awards through the NEiTA Foundation, a national awards program which honours and rewards teachers who make an outstanding contribution to our school. We have only weeks to go to the nomination deadline - Friday, 20 July, 2001 (the first Friday of Term Two). Nomination forms are available from the Junior School Office, on the website www.neita.com , or by telephoning Free Call 1800 624 487. Don't forget, you can nominate online. Enjoy the school holidays! Alice Chan - President, JSPA Scotch College Suzuki WorkshopFriday, 1 June is a day that won't soon be forgotten by our Junior School community, not by the 109 Suzuki violin students whom we welcomed to the school for the day. Suzuki students from as far as Werribee and Wantirna and everywhere in between descended on our Junior School for a happy day of music making. Twenty nine boys in our own Scotch Suzuki program relished the opportunity to play and learn together with girls and boys from 39 other schools. There was fun to be had right through the day. Our Scotch Suzuki teachers Bob Wakely and John Officer were joined for the day by guest tutors Wendy Tooke, Toni Robson, Kim Bishop and Alan Tooke. They all showed us totally new and fun ways of playing during the tutorials and repertoire classes. It was amazing to see just what else can be done at the same time as playing the violin! The play-ins were a sight to behold and even students and staff of Scotch who weren't participating in the workshop were able to enjoy them. The beautiful sound of 138 violinists playing together could be heard in all corners of the school! The whole day was such a happy experience that students and parents were heard asking 'When is the next Scotch Suzuki workshop'?
