31 August 2001 No. 25From Head of the Junior SchoolWell, tonight's the night that we all have been all waiting for! The Rod Laver Arena is set to come alive with the sights and sounds of Scotch College in an action packed and highly entertaining program of musical festivity. For boys, families and friends, this is set to be a night that will never be forgotten - a once in a life time opportunity and all present will look back in later years and say, "We were there!" I trust everyone enjoys the night and if you still have not purchased your tickets, some will be available at the door or through Ticketek outlets. Starting at 7.45pm sharp, we are set for another history making event. See you all there!! Congratulations are extended to Mr Dickinson and the boys of 6D who combined with girls from Ruyton in setting up small businesses over the past few weeks. This week, we saw the final result, with each business selling their items to both school communities. Money raised has been used to repay initial 'start up' loans from the schools, with any profits then being donated to charity. I know the boys have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and challenges associated with this exciting project and whilst final amounts are still to be tallied, I am advised that a healthy sum has been raised. Well done 6D! Well done also to the boys in Prep -Year Two who read and sang so beautifully in their Chapel Service on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Robertson has reported that this was another very special Junior Primary service, again well attended by many families and friends. This morning whilst the older boys had their final rehearsals for their concert evening, our Prep to Year 3 boys enjoyed their first 'Soccer Morning". Thanks are extended to the many families who shared in the morning's proceedings and to the many staff who organised the finer details. Special thanks go to Mrs Robertson who was instrumental in arranging the day and I hope all boys enjoyed their special morning. Today we farewelled Miss Rebekah Harvey from the King's School in New Zealand. Rebekah has spent the last two weeks with us in 1R and has provided a wonderful program for the boys. This exchange has been extremely successful and I sincerely thank and congratulate Rebekah on the way she so capably joined our school community. In wishing Rebekah a safe journey home, we also look forward to welcoming home Miss Raymond, who has also enjoyed her time away at Kings. Thanks, Rebekah - it has been a pleasure having you at Scotch! Congratulations are extended to Derek Yu (4I) who is a budding Chess champion. Derek recently competed in the 'Australian Rapid Play Championships" and was awarded 1st place in the Under 10 division. He also won $50.00 for his efforts. Well done, Derek! We have had no theme running this week, but I would like to share some thoughts passed on to me by Mr Irvine from a book titled 'The Ripple Effect' by Tom Ryan. The scenario: Breakfast - everyone is rushing around, attempting to prepare themselves for the day ahead. The children, as usual, are finding it hard to get up! The turning point: In spite of your frustration with the children making you late, you directly compliment your youngest child at the breakfast table. "Thank you," you say, "for your great efforts with your homework last night." The ripple effect: ' the child goes quiet, and flushes slightly at the praise My thought for the week….
You can't live a perfect day without doing something for
(John Woden) Guy B Mason From the Deputy HeadThe Fathers' Day Breakfasts have been a highlight this week. It was terrific to see so many fathers in attendance over the three mornings. Mr Guy Mason spoke each morning about the importance of positive role models for our boys and, in particular, the importance of role models. He mentioned that the results of recent research is highlighting the important role that fathers play in the development of boys and it was pleasing to see that so many fathers were able share breakfast with their sons. Thanks must also go to the JSPA for their work in organizing the mornings and I look forward to fulfilling the role of judging the Father Son Look-a-Like Competition once again! It was a tough competition and the pressure was on, but I thoroughly enjoyed the good nature of our participants. The term is nearing completion, however events continue to keep both the staff and boys very busy indeed. Year 2 girls from Korowa will be visiting our Year 2 class on Monday, while the Year One will be visiting the Melbourne Aquarium on Tuesday morning. House Public Speaking for Years Three - Six will commence on Wednesday morning at Assembly while the Choir will be traveling to St Catherine's on Thursday for a workshop and a brief performance at 4.00 pm. Parents of the boys are encouraged to attend the performance if they are able to do so. Please see Jenni Allen or myself if there are any difficulties in attending this event. Have a relaxing and enjoyable weekend with your families.
