G B Mason

From Head of the Junior School

This week has been Health Week and it has been encouraging to see so many boys, teachers and family members walking, jogging and running around the oval each morning before school. More importantly, it has been great to see everyone enjoying themselves so much!

Lunchtimes have seen a variety of activities involving students and staff and again, it was difficult to ascertain who had more fun! Thanks are extended to Mr Hawkins and the Health Committee who organised the activities for the week.

I remind parents of boys in Years Three to Six that Speech Night will be held in the Memorial Hall next Thursday evening, commencing promptly at 7.45pm. This is a compulsory activity for these boys and full school uniform will be required. This is always a wonderful night and I look forward to seeing you all there.

All current boys will have the opportunity to meet with teachers for 2002 next Wednesday morning. Whilst boys will not know their actual class placement (as this has not been finalised yet), they will however have the opportunity to hear from the staff with whom they will be working at their new year level.

Whilst boys do not have the opportunity to select which staff member they prefer in the new school year, I advise parents of the levels staff will teach in 2002.

Mr Matthew Dickinson will teach ICT whilst Mr Murdoch takes leave for 12 months. All other Specialist teachers will remain in their current area.

I am also delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Andrew Strempel as our new teacher of Christian Education. Mr Strempel joins the staff with a wealth of experience from the Education Department and Trinity Grammar, Kew.

Mr Strempel is married to Jenny and they have three children. Bringing a firm commitment to the Lord Jesus, musical and sporting skills to Scotch, Mr Strempel is well placed to involve himself across many areas of the school and I look forward with anticipation to the many contributions he will make.

My thought for the week….

Remember that without good character,
knowledge and talent are wasted.

From the Deputy Head

Preparations are well under way for our end of year celebrations, with Speech Night being a major focus. If you have a moment, please feel free to drop in and have a look at our Christmas display adorning the walls of the Junior School Hall. A great deal of time and effort, from both staff and students, has gone into the displays, with outstanding results.

Your boys will no doubt have kept you up to date with the many activities that have been planned for the end of year, with Transition Morning on Wednesday, 5 December being an important event. From 10:00am till 10:30am, boys will move to their 2002 classrooms and will have an opportunity to find out about their activities for next year. They will also have time to ask questions about the year ahead of them.

A reminder to parents that if your son requires any form of medication or oral supplements (eg vitamins) to please write to me regarding the form of medication and details regarding its administration. Boys are expected to keep their medication in my office and to come to me at the prescribed times. A list is kept to monitor each boy's medication intake. If medication is to cease, could you please inform me in writing. Boys should not be self-administering any form of medication or dietary supplements (such as vitamins), unless under the supervision of myself and with parental consent. I wish you all well for a happy and safe weekend.

The Giving Tree

At our Prep to Year 6 Assembly this morning, I spoke to all boys about our Giving Tree for this year.

In recent years it has become a tradition for the boys in the Junior School to bring along non-perishable food and /or new toys (unwrapped) for children less privileged themselves. This year everything will

be presented to Anglicare Victoria who will distribute them to disadvantaged families, so that they too may enjoy the sharing of presents and a family Christmas dinner.

The Giving Tree is already set up in the Assembly Hall in anticipation of the many toys and food for hampers.

The Giving Tree will run from Monday, 3 December to Friday, 7 December. Boys are asked to leave their Christmas gifts/food under the tree, where they will be suitably directed to children of various ages.

All donations need to be at school by Friday, 7 December as a representative from Anglicare will speak to the boys at assembly that day and take away the gifts for distribution to needy families. We look forward once again to your generous support.

I can't believe there's only one and a half weeks of school to go for 2001! Next week I will be including with the newsletter the dates for the Morning Teas that are held in the first few weeks of 2002.

The next one and half weeks also sees lots of end of year parties and excited chatter about the coming holidays, and we all wish all our Year Sixes well as they go off to Senior School next year. We're sure they've got many wonderful memories of their time in the Junior School.

Calling all Year Three Mums and Dads for 2002 - we need you!

At present Year Three has only one class rep and one or two more would be wonderful. Please call me ASAP. Your job will be fulfilling and rewarding. Ph 9822 9995

A reminder that the last Swap Shop for the year is on Friday, 7 December from 2.30 pm- 3.45 pm.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries, suggestions, terrific ideas or just to say 'Hello'. Thanky ou.
