G B Mason

From Head of the Junior School

This has been a very busy week for the boys of Year Six, who have spent much time reflecting on their first seven years of school and indeed, celebrating their final year of their primary education.

Their busy week commenced with a stunning display of projects and the three classes presented a 'World Expo' of sights, smells, tastes and sounds from countries around our world. I congratulate the boys on their efforts and I know the rest of the school enjoyed their journey around the world in a very short time.

A special gathering in the Chapel on Thursday morning enabled Year Six to look back and reflect on what has gone before. In doing so, they are in a good position to now start thinking of what lies ahead in the Senior School. A most enjoyable luncheon was shared and special guest, Year 11 student Simon Gamboni spoke of his experiences in the Senior School and was most encouraging of every student to get in and 'have a go'.

Speech Night last night also provided an opportunity for the school to acknowledge the Year Six Class of 2001, who received their graduation certificates and were sent from the hall to a stirring rendition of the Irish Blessing. I trust families enjoyed this very special occasion.

Congratulation to James Leung in 6P for achieving a high distinction (A+) in his Grade 4 piano exam. Well done, James.

We look forward with great anticipation to the Prep to Six Christmas Service, which will be held on Tuesday afternoon, commencing at 2.00pm. The boys of the Junior Primary have been working very hard to ensure that this year's is the best one yet. Please feel free to join us on this very special occasion as we celebrate the birth of Jesus and reflect on this very important Christmas message.

As our year draws to a close, so do the careers of two very fine teachers in Mrs Anne Kimber and Mrs Elizabeth Dawe, who retire next week. Many boys of the Junior School have been so capably taught and given a wonderful start to their educational lives by Mrs Dawe and Mrs Kimber. In thanking them both, I extend the best wishes of the Scotch Family for happy retirements to our two Prep teachers. We will farewell Anne and Liz at our final Assembly next week.

Miss Larissa Raymond leaves for Caulfield Grammar with our best wishes and Mr Murdoch is looking forward to his twelve months leave.

Our theme this week has been Perseverance. Mr McKinlay led the boys through various aspects relating to the theme and I note he has made comment on this elsewhere in this Newsletter.

As this will be the last Newsletter for this year (and hasn't it gone quickly!), I take this opportunity to thank the Scotch Family for their continued support of the Junior School, none more so than in our 150th year. In leaving you with my final thought for the year, I wish you all a very happy, safe and joyous Christmas.

May the feet of God walk with you and his hand hold you tight.
May the eye of God rest on you and his ear hear you cry.
May the smile of God be for you and his breath give you life.
May the child of God grow in you and his love bring you home.

From the Deputy Head

This week at our Year Three - Six Assembly I had an opportunity to talk to the boys about our theme for the week: Perseverance. It is a quality that I believe we all need if we are to enjoy success. If we are to become an expert or are able to do something well, very rarely are we able to do it well the first time. I stressed to the boys that if we are to be successful in whatever field we choose, a quality we must have is perseverance. Tim Udorovic read a story about twins, one who persevered with learning an instrument and was successful, and the other who did not and she gave up.

Mr Irvine told a true story about an AFL footballer who was told by the now coach of Collingwood, Mick Malthouse, that he would be cut from the pre season training list. However, he didn't give up, this person still continued to train, he played well in the practice games and eventually he was chosen to play in the first game of the year. A very relevant example of a person who never gave up on his dream. Jimmy Jewitt and Richard Wilkinson gave a visual example of persisting with basketball training or creating a piece of writing that you feel is your best.

The Year Six Valedictory lunch, Speech Night, Christmas Service and the final Assembly on Wednesday next week, will conclude what has been a memorable year for each and every member of the Scotch College family. Scotch College is a wonderful place to be either as a student, parent or staff member and I would like to thank the Junior School as a whole for making my first six months so enjoyable.

I wish the graduating Class of 2001 all the best for a successful entry into Senior School and look forward to welcoming our Year Five class into Year 6 in 2002 as our new school leaders.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and safe new year and I look forward with much anticipation and excitement to working with you and your boys in 2002.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Rodney McKinlay

The Educational Support Team

During the exciting Year 2001, the Access staff has been fortunate to work with many boys on a vast range of interesting and supportive programs. Our never-ending challenge is to meet the needs of your sons. We seek to find the best ways to motivate, stimulate and to support their learning, whether the need is for consolidation or extension.

Next year I hope to develop more parent participation in our programs, in particular in reading activities. Please let me know if you would be interested. More information will be given in 2002.

As the Year 2001 rapidly draws to an end I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all in the Educational Support Team to thank you for your support and to wish you a very happy, safe and relaxing Christmas and New Year.

Ms Marcia Bacon, Director of Educational Support Services
Mrs Jane Beams, Mrs Chris Robertson, Mr Rod McKinlay, Mr Brian Sampson,

Skipping

Well done to the 70-80 boys from Years Three, Four and Five who demonstrated their skipping skills in the gym this week. We are encouraging all boys interested in trying out for a school demonstration team in 2002 to practise over the summer holidays. Ropes will be on sale at school on Monday, 10 December at recess from Ms Beams in the Access Unit.

Hints and instructions on tricks will also be available at this time. Skipping ropes cost $4 each. Thank you.

Jane Beams and David Walker

Giving Tree

Once again we have had a wonderful response to our 'Giving Tree'. This morning at our Prep-Six Assembly, Christine French accepted all the gifts and food on behalf of Anglicare. She spoke about our fantastic response and where everything will be distributed. She also mentioned that others who are less fortunate will benefit from our generosity.

Liz Wyatt - RIL Coordinator.

Sport

Mr Hawkins is missing many of the Scotch College red athletic singlets. If any of the boys still have one at home from the APS Cross Country or athletics carnivals could they please return them to the PE office. These singlets are used each year by boys in the squads.

On Monday, a group of Year five cricketers hosted The Scots College Preparatory School from NSW on the Lower East turf wicket. The Scots team were a group of Year Six boys and in the end won the match. Special mention to Maurice Clayton who was unbeaten on 41runs. A great effort. We look forward to a possible rematch in two years time.

Peter Hawkins

Reading

Thank you to all those parents who have helped cover so many reading resources this year. It has been greatly appreciated by students and staff. Our reading Resource Room is looking fantastic with such a large variety of text types.

At present we are cataloguing our reading resources. If any parents could help count and sort books, please let Larissa Raymond know asap. This work will need to be done at school.

Once again thank you for all your support in this vital area of the curriculum.

Larissa Raymond - English Coordinator
