From the Head of Junior School
Year 6I returned today from the final camp for Year Six this year. On all accounts this exciting adventure camp was enjoyed by every member of the Year Six community. I extend special thanks to those staff who give up their own family time, in order to spend quality time with their classes.
A thorough search has commenced to find a new Head of the Junior School Music Department. Mrs Penny Byrne, who has achieved marvellous results in our music programmes has accepted a half time position at Strathcona, enabling her to spend more time with her own family. More will be said later about, the contributions by Mrs Byrne and her successor.
My theme for this week has been 'self-discipline'. We focussed on a number of areas including; speaking and acting calmly when you are hurt or angry; getting things done in an orderly and efficient way; creating routines at home and at school; doing what is expected, without being reminded, and doing things on time.
I left the boys with the following affirmation in their weekly focus:
"I have self-discipline. I use my time well and get things done. I chose my actions with detachment."
My thought for the week comes from Paul's letter to the Hebrews (12:11)
"Discipline, to be sure, is never pleasant; at times it seems even painful, but afterwards those who have been trained by it reap the harvest of a peaceful and upright life."

Mathematics in the Junior School
Maths Share activity sheets are again being provided to all Junior School students this year.
Each fortnight your son will bring home a Maths Share activity sheet. The second one for this term accompanies this week's Junior School Newsletter.
The tasks are designed to promote interest and family liaison on various and varying mathematical topics.
The ideas are drawn from the main strands of the Mathematics C.S.F. and provide interesting number, measurement, chance and data, space and algebra activities.
Prep, Years 1 and 2 receive yellow sheets
Year 3 and 4 receive green sheets
Years 5 and 6 receive orange sheets
The class teachers and Mathematics Committee commend the Maths Share Sheets to you.

Art News
Most classes have been involved in a painting program over the month of February. Please find time to visit the Assembly Hall as nearly every boy in the school has a painting or drawing on display.
Younger boys have been mixing primary colours to make secondary colours and using class themes as their topics for painting. Year 6 boys have been using Australian poetry and paintings as a stimulus for painting and drawing.
Fine Art paintings from the National Gallery of Victoria are discussed in Year 3 to 6 classes in every art lesson.
I am still collecting egg cartons, ice-cream containers and 2 litre plastic drink bottles for a project with Year 2 boys.
Thank you

Report on Frogs Tom Ryan 2C
Introduction
Frogs have big eyes and they live in Australia and all over the world. Every frog in the world is an amphibian. Toads are kind of like frogs but toads are bigger.
Description
Frogs have long legs so they can jump high in the air. Frogs have big eyes and some are spotty and colourful. They can be round or fat.
Diet
Frogs have long sticky tongues so they can catch flies and mosquitoes.
Habitat
Frogs live in or near water. Tree frogs sometimes live in trees or live on land.
Lifecycle
Frogs start off as taddies and the eggs float and look like eyes. The taddies stay as taddies for two months and then they grow legs. Next they are a frog.
Schultueten
Both Prep grades and their partner classes took part in the presentation of 'Schultueten' during last week. As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, this is an adaptation of the German tradition, that we have carried out at Scotch for the past few years.
5W and 5G produced some excellent 'Schultueten' designing and crafting them with great care and thought! It was terrific to see the looks of joy and amazement on the Prep boys faces as their "armed buddies" walked into the room. A great time was had by all.

Congratulations to Eugene Hubay (6W) who was the runner-up in the APS Junior Schools Tennis Championships. A great effort.
On Wednesday 31 March, boys in Year 3-6 will have the opportunity to be fitted for a mouthguard. Please see the sheet for prices and colours. We strongly encourage boys to use mouthguards during any contact sports like hockey, football, soccer, basketball. Please return forms to Mr Hawkins.
