26 March 1999 No. 9From the Head of Junior SchoolA busy term is rapidly coming to a close and with only a few days remaining, this will be the last Newsletter until next term. On Monday 29 March we will be presenting badges to the newly appointed school leaders. While all Year Six boys are considered leaders and as such, have many opportunities for taking on leadership roles, I extend special congratulations to the following boys:
Mr Ian Savage (Vice Principal), Tim Downing (Senior School Captain), and Tom Cade (Senior School Vice Captain) will attend our Assembly and present the badges of office. In last week's Newsletter, I posed a 'family' Mars Bar question. The answers required were: Emulate, Simulate and Formulate. Well done to the Weldon, Arsenakis, Taylor, Robey, Matthews, Black, Jonson, Marriot, Worth and McPhee Families who all produce correct answers. In a 'lucky draw', the Weldon Family were the winners for the week - congratulations! On Wednesday, our Year Five and Year Six boys competed in their annual Swimming Carnival. All boys are to be congratulated for trying so hard. With Year Three and Four events to be held next Monday, final results will be unknown until then. This week my theme has been 'Forgiveness', which ties in beautifully with the Easter message. (All boys will participate in Easter Chapel services next week). The boys were encouraged to learn from their mistakes and those of others and left with the following passage of scripture: 'For God loved the world so much that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.' (John 3:16) The Prep boys enjoyed their annual Teddy Bears Picnic today, which has prompted my thought for the week, a quote from Winnie-The-Pooh. I trust that all families enjoy a wonderful Easter, taking time to reflect on what is such an important time in the Christian year. GUY B MASON The James Forbes AcademyYou may be wondering when you can hear about the most significant project undertaken by Scotch College in 60 years 'The James Forbes Academy' and consider how you too may support this most exciting venture. Keep one of these dates free
For the second time in the 148 year history of the school you will have the opportunity to dine in the Memorial Hall. Invitations will be sent out in late April Portfolio'sWith the end of term rapidly approaching parents of Prep to Year 4 boys are asked to return their son's portfolio to his class teacher. Teachers and boys are keen to add more work to the collection. We trust that you enjoyed sharing your son's work.
Thank you
From the JPSAAll the year level Cocktail Parties have now been held. All were attended and I enjoyed meeting with the Junior School Parents at these evenings. Despite the weather, Sunday's Tennis Day went ahead with a keen sports person insisting on playing through the rain. Lunch was held at several host homes and all reports have been of a lovely time being had by all. The raffle was drawn at school on Monday morning with the following results for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes - 1st Prize - Accommodation and Breakfast at The Bayside Novotel Value $250.00
2nd Prize - A Brolley Trolley Value $195.00.
3rd Prize - Wild Winter Polar Fleece Jacket Value $190.00
Congratulations to these families and also to the other 14 prize winners who have been notified. Thank you to all who supported Tennis Day. As Easter is fast approaching, Dominique Yu has organised the Easter Egg Guessing Competition for this year. For guessing times please check last week's Flyer or the JSPA Notice Board. Monday will be the last chance to order Hot Cross Buns and of course the class with the most orders wins a basket of eggs!!! Please find today in your son's bag a 'very special invitation' to the JSPA Mothers' Day Luncheon on 7 May next term. This major function will be a delightful day with lots of special treats for very important people in our lives. Due to the unique venue the numbers are limited so please book early. I hope that everyone has a wonderful Easter Holiday.

Art NewsBoys in the Junior Primary section of the school have been involved in Easter Activities. Prep and Year 1 boys have painted Easter Rabbits and made Easter baskets. There is a display of Prep rainbows in the Junior School foyer. Year 2 boys have made paper mache chalices which has been exciting and challenging for the boys. Year 3 and 4 boys have been working on class topics. Year 3 boys have made paper mache hot air balloons as part of their Transport topic, while Year 4 boys have made large collage puppets as part of their theme. Many Classes have been painting large murals for the Easter display in the Assembly Hall. Please find time to see this display of the true meaning of Easter. Thank you to all parents who have helped this term in the Art room and for boys and parents who have collected materials for use in Art room activities. Could boys please smooth out and save the coloured shiny paper around Easter eggs as this is most useful for other activities. Susan Ferres Year 2 MathsDuring term 2 all year 2 boys will be participating in a hands on maths programme. This programme is designed to improve the boys' knowledge and interest in every day mathematics. The activities are measurement, chance and data, number games, number 1 - 100, calculators, cooking and 2D/3D shapes. Teachers will provide a sequence of all activities and questions that will lead the discussion and activity. The success of the programme requires the assistance of at least 8 parents who can commit themselves to a regular time and day of the cycle. You would be required between 11.00 and 12.00 on the following Day 3 dates:
22 April
I look forward to your continued support.
