23 April 1999 No. 10From the Head of Junior SchoolWelcome back to all families and I trust all enjoyed a refreshing vacation. The end of the last term proved very busy and a number of activities occurred which are reported below. I wish all boys a very happy and fruitful term. At our final assembly in Term One I presented the annual swimming trophies to Nicholas Slater and Eugene Hubay, Leaders of Waller House. I congratulate all boys on the fine level of competition, results of which can be found elsewhere in this edition. At this assembly, I was also pleased to present a basket full of Easter Eggs to Year 2C who sold the most hot cross buns for the J.S.P.A. I was delighted when 2C informed me that they wanted all of the eggs to go to the Royal Children's Hospital. The eggs were delivered by Mrs Sampson and were gratefully received. Well done 2C! I also presented Class Captain badges to those boys selected for this role in Term Two. Congratulations are extended to:
Our Easter Hat Parade was a huge success and a most enjoyable walk-a-thon followed in cool, but pleasant conditions. Over $2,000.00 was raised and donated to the Good Friday Appeal. Special thanks are extended to our parent 'Sausage Sizzlers' for preparing a wonderful lunch and all families who donated to this worthwhile cause. All boys participated in Easter Chapel Services during the last week, where the true meaning of Easter was shared. Both services of worship were led by Reverend Bradbeer and provided a wonderful end to a busy term. During first term, the J.S.P.A. have been extremely active and I was thrilled to receive a cheque for over $13,000 to provide Lap Top storage cabinets in the Library, a networked colour Laser printer and the Annual Teachers' 'Wish List', where additional resources are provided to enhance our academic programmes.
The Laser Printer, which will be located centrally in the Resource Centre was donated by profits from the Swap Shop. Special thanks are extended to Mrs Helen Worth and her helpers for this special addition. I indeed thank all parents who have contributed in making these 'extras' possible. I received a letter from the Metropolitan Ambulance Service making parents aware of 'Fake Tattoos' that are being distributed. These are called 'Blue Star' and I am told, have been saturated with L.S.D, which is ingested when licked to stick to the skin. There are also brightly coloured tattoos in the form of postage stamps depicting Superman, Mickey Mouse, clowns, Bart Simpson and butterflies. They are individually wrapped in a piece of foil. Please be aware of these and the possible side effects. As Term Two commences, I extend a warm welcome to two new members of staff, who have been employed for this term. Ms Julie Piggin joins us in the Music Department four days per week and Ms Annie Green will teach Drama on a Wednesday. These temporary arrangements have been made, whilst searching for a new Music/Drama teacher to replace Mrs Byrne. We wish both Julie and Annie a happy term. Today I presented badges to the following boys who have been selected as Art Monitors for 1999. Congratulations to: Nicholas Denby, Jamie Robertson, Simon May, Perri Pulitano, Mark Leung, Kenneth McAllister, Edward Butler, Hamish Morgan, Jonathon Goldsmith, Christopher Taylor, Christopher Jewitt, Hamish Lockwood, Lachlan McDonough, Dwayne Ganesh and James Doidge. I was also pleased to present 'finalist' ribbons to Andrew Earle, Peter Earle, Alistair England and Nicholas Turner who finished a brilliant fifth place in the 9/10 years freestyle relay at the Victorian Primary Schools' State Swimming Championships last term. The boys swam a personal best time and are to be commended for doing so well! I have attached to this Newsletter, a letter of invitation to a J.S.P.A. seminar to be held in May, titled 'Understanding Your Teenager'. This seminar is designed for parents with children between 8 and 18 and I can highly recommend it. (Parents with children of all ages will benefit!) The presenter, Graham Hyman, is a parent at my last school and presents an entertaining seminar, not to be missed. All details are attached. I remind parents that winter uniform is now compulsory until the beginning of Fourth Term and I seek your assistance in all boys presenting in full uniform. At this morning's assembly, P - 6 remembered ANZAC Day, hearing the story of the ANZAC's whilst viewing a presentation by Mr Hawkins who visited Gallipoli during his long service leave last year. This moving assembly tied in beautifully with my theme for the week, which was 'Unity'. My thought for the week:
(Colossians 3, 13-14) GUY B MASON From the Physical Education DepartmentAll boys in Years 5 & 6 are required to train after school with their Wednesday Interschool squad. Training will conclude at 4.15 pm and boys going home by car will require their tracksuit.
Inter school matches begin on Wednesday 28 April. Parents are most welcome to support the boys at these games. Congratulations to the following boys who represented Scotch at the APS state teams trials for the Victorian Primary Schools Sports Association.
Art NewsMany classes in Term 2 will be participating in a clay unit. Boys will be involved in moulding and making a range of items in clay. Years 4 and 5 will be using paper mache to make 3D models. As both of these activities are rather messy, waterproof smocks are essential to protect the boys' uniforms. Could you please ensure that your son has a red smock on his Art day. Scotch smocks can be bought from the Swap Shop. I am collecting cardboard cylinders as the inside of lunch wraps and shoe boxes for construction projects. Thank you

!!!!Canteen Special!!!!Every Friday the canteen will be having a homemade pasta special starting on 30th April. 30th April - Macaroni Cheese $2.20 Easter Hat ParadeOn the final day of Term 1 all boys participated in the Easter Hat Parade and Walkathon around the school. It was a tremendous effort by all boys who had lots of fun, culminating in a delicious sausage sizzle for lunch. As a result of our day the Junior School raised $2,075.45. A fantastic amount, which will be donated to the Royal Children's Hospital. A representative will be coming to Assembly to receive our cheque, in recognition for a job well done! Thank you to all the mothers who assisted with the sausage sizzle, without your help it would have been very difficult to organise. Well done to everyone involved! Health WeekTo coincide with the Life Education Visit the Health Committee has organised a week of activities to reinforce a healthy life style. Activities such as Tabloid games, Aerobics, Jogging, Handball, Table Tennis and Bat Tennis will be available for boys. The finale will be Scotch's attempt to create the longest school lunch. Longest Lunch at ScotchAs part of Health Week all classes in the Junior School are participating in the longest lunch. On Tuesday 4th May all boys are required to bring a cut roll or bread and a healthy drink to make their own lunch. At 12.00 all boys will go onto the oval to enjoy their healthy lunch and drink. Parent Help NeededParents are required to help chop, grate and serve fillings for the longest lunch. All fillings will be prepared on Monday 3rd May from 1.45pm.
