From the Head of Junior School

This week has seen the arrival of the 'Life Education' Caravan and associated with this, the school has been enjoying Health Week and will continue to do so until next Tuesday. By then, all boys will have visited the Life Education session and I encourage all families to take the time to discuss issues raised throughout these informative sessions.

Each lunch time, a series of activities has been available for boys to participate in and I thank the teachers for devoting so much extra time during their own lunch hours to provide these activities for the boys. It has been great to see so many boys 'having a go', focussing on different areas of fitness and skill acquisition.

Our Health Week will conclude with the whole Junior School combining to enjoy our 'Longest Lunch' ever, by eating our lunch together on the oval.

All boys now require Winter Uniform and I thank parents for their cooperation in this matter. I refer parents to the Junior School Handbook, which outlines our uniform requirements. It would seem that there has been some confusion in regards to the wearing of the College Slicker and I refer to Page 15 of the Handbook, which states that the slicker is an optional item in preference to the tracksuit top for Year 6 boys only. Boys in younger classes are not permitted to wear the slicker as a part of their sport uniform.

As the damper weather begins to approach, I remind parents that raincoats should be grey or yellow, also as stated on Page 15 of the Handbook. Parkas or other coloured coats are not permitted.

As our new term commences, I have observed many boys arriving late to school. School commences with the first bell at 8.25 am allowing for a prompt beginning at 8.30 am. Boys arriving after 8.30 am should report to the teacher on duty or directly to the office. Cooperation here will ensure a smooth start to the school day for both boys and staff.

My theme for this week has been 'Honor' and was an appropriate follow up to ANZAC Day, last weekend. We discussed that Honor involves, among other things, having respect for what you believe is right; living up to the gifts which the Creator has given; not being ashamed of who you are; respecting others and doing what is just, regardless of what others are doing or thinking. The boys were left with the following affirmation:

'I am honorable. I keep my agreements and treat others with respect.
I care about doing the right thing.'

My thought for the week:

Faith and doubt
Doubt sees the obstacles.
Faith sees the way.
Doubt sees the darkest night.
Faith sees the day.
Doubt dreads to take a step.
Faith soars on high.
Doubt questions 'Who believes?'
Faith answers 'I.'

From the JSPA

Welcome back to Term 2. We have an exciting and interesting time ahead for the JSPA. This Term starts with the sale of tea towels that Helen Worth has co-ordinated. They look terrific and they are on display on the notice board. A fabulous memento of your son's time at Scotch!

Next week is a busy week. On Thursday there will be a Mothers' Day Stall for the boys to purchase presents. These will range in price from $2 - $10. (The majority being $5). Please make sure that your son has his money on Thursday so as not to be disappointed. There will be plenty of assistance for the younger year levels to help with their purchasing. Please refer to flyer for more information.

We are very excited about the Mothers' Day Luncheon on Friday 7 May to be held at Chapter House. It has been sold out!!! This will be a lovely luncheon with Junior School mothers and boys performing.

The returns for the Lecture Evening 'Understanding Your Teenager' presented by Graham Hyman on Wednesday 19 May at 7.30 pm have been flowing in. I have heard Graham lecture and I can highly recommend anyone with children to attend. The seminar will be held in the Science Lecture Theatre in the Senior School behind the Language Centre off Morrison Street.

The last event for the JSPA this term will be on Friday 4 June. This is going to be a great fun night with surprises and atmosphere so put it in your diaries now. More details to follow.

At the end of last Term it was our pleasure to hand to the Junior School over $13,000. As the Head of Junior School noted last week this money was used to provide a Lap Top storage cabinet, a networked Laser Printer and funding of the Teachers' "Wish List". We are very happy to be able to support the School in this way.

I look forward seeing you through the Term.
