From the Head of Junior School

This week we saw the departure of the 'Life Education Caravan.' All boys have participated in this worthwhile programme and all have received follow up material to be used at home. I encourage all families to review this material with their son.

Health Week, tied in with the Life Education visit concluded on Tuesday. We welcomed Grant Weir, an ex-Australian Baseball player, to our Monday Assembly. He encouraged the boys to take on board a healthy attitude to life by enjoying all games and focussing on the things that will help them grow up in a healthy way - not just during a formal Health Week, but every week!

This was a wonderful week of activities, culminating in the 'longest lunch ever' in the Junior School. Boys prepared their own healthy lunch and shared this with their cross-age buddies on the Junior School oval.

Special thanks are extended to the many parents who cut up and prepared the salad items for the boys to make their rolls and also to the staff for the extra time and effort devoted to this important aspect of personal development.

This week the boys also heard about Multiple Sclerosis (M-S) and how they can help fund research into this condition by entering the M-S Read-a-thon. Any boy interested in participating in this activity should collect a form from the Library.

Next Monday we will welcome a representative from the Royal Children's Hospital, who will receive a cheque for over $2000.00 from Mrs Taylor. This cheque represents the money raised by the boys at the end of last term. The coordinator of the Good Friday Appeal also wrote to me during the week congratulating, and indeed thanking, our Year 2C boys who donated their well-deserved basket of eggs to the sick children. I was, assured that the eggs were thoroughly enjoyed and a most appreciated gift.

Today our School Leaders represented Scotch at an ecumenical service hosted by the Junior School Heads' Association of Australia at the Crossways Baptist Church in Burwood. Over one thousand children from around Victoria shared in this worship service and I congratulate our Leaders on their fine representation.

We have not had a theme for this week; however, Mothers' Day has provided an underlying theme in many ways. All boys have prepared their own gift through the Art Department and, for the first time, the J.S.P.A has provided gifts for purchase.

I extend very best wishes to all our 'mums' for a very special day on Sunday and encourage every boy to take the time to show his mum just how much she really does mean to him.

My thought for the week is taken from a popular hymn;

Now thank we all our God,
With hearts and hands and voices;
Who wondrous things has done,
In whom the world rejoices;
Who, from our mother's arms,
Has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours today.

National Family Reading Month

The month of May is National Family Reading Month. The focus is to create an opportunity for the children to recognise how often we all read, to observe the type of materials we read and to discover ways of making our reading a fun family activity for all months of the year. Your son will bring home a Family guide that provides many ideas that will help 'make reading a family tradition'. These are some ideas to consider for your family:

  • All members of the family buy a new book together or locate an old favourite to read;
  • Read and share together at home;
  • Discuss books as a family;
  • Target titles and authors which family members enjoy;
  • Make recommendations to other families;
  • Search for listening tapes or talking books;
  • Conduct a questionnaire related to reading likes with family members.

Your enthusiasm and involvement in reading at home will be contagious.
