From the Head of Junior School

By now, all parents should have received an invitation to one of two special dinners to be held in the Memorial Hall in June. These dinners will mark only the second time in the history of the school that the Memorial Hall will have been transformed into such a spectacular venue: this occasion being the launch of the James Forbes Academy (Schools for Music, Drama and Communication). Both dinners are set to be most enjoyable nights and will provide a great opportunity for you to hear about this exciting venture. Tables can be arranged through the Development Office or, should you prefer, we can place you on a table with other Junior School parents. These tables will be arranged closer to the date of your preferred night.

As all current Junior School boys will directly benefit from this project, it would be great to see strong support from the Junior School community on both nights. Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Development Office.

On Monday, we welcomed Mrs Christine Unsworth-Screen, Executive Director of the Good Friday Appeal, to our Prep to Six Assembly. Junior School Captain, Alistair Watson, presented Mrs Unsworth-Screen with a cheque for over $2000.00 towards the 1999 Good Friday Appeal. Mrs Unsworth-Screen then informed the boys about some of the ways that the money will be used and she expressed her sincere thanks for the generosity displayed.

I extend congratulations to the many boys who performed items at the Mother's Day luncheon last week. I hear on the grapevine that the presentations were of an exceptionally high standard, as were the items provided by some extremely talented 'mums'.

At our weekly Chaplain's Assembly on Tuesday, Reverend Bradbeer spoke about leadership. He then presented badges of office to our 'School Officers.' These boys play an important role around the school, assisting staff and boys in a variety of ways.

Congratulations are extended to the following 1999 School Officers:

Music:

Strings - Mark Leong
Band- James Symon
Choir- Michael Katz & Jonathon Goldsmith

Sport:

Lachlan Rough, James Doidge, Edward Butler

Bradshaw:

Robert Bosher, Watkin McLennan

Campbell:

Paul Bowman, Jonathon Docker

Healey:

Matthew Wallace-Smith, Andrew Story

Waller:

Christopher Taylor, Andrew Stern

General:

Nicholas Cheng, Jonathan Choiselat, William Don, Michael Sutherland, Douglas Eager, James Rentschler, Elliott Broadbent, Daniel Hui, Jack Reed, Matthew Adams, Shane Ng, Alistair Leitch.

We wish them well in their new roles.

Next week, Graham Hyman will be presenting his 'Understanding Your Teenager' seminar to over 220 parents. This function will begin at 7.30 pm in the Science Lecture Theatre located in the Senior School. The easiest access to this theatre is by entering the school between the Language Centre and the Senior School Tuckshop. Due to such demand, no further places are available for this seminar.

Graham will also be working with all of Year Six, focussing on the responsibilities associated with being a senior student. He will then spend some time with the School Leaders, specifically focussing on their roles as leaders of the Junior School.

Last night our Choir performed brilliantly at the annual May Concert. It is always a delight to hear our boys performing so confidently and I extend my congratulations to each member for their continued commitment to this important facet of the school. Thanks are also extended to Miss Allen and Ms Piggin for their efforts in preparing the boys.

Some parents may have observed a recent advertisement for a Physical Education teacher, to commence at Scotch from the beginning of Term Three, 1999. I am delighted to inform parents that Mrs Edmanson has announced that she is expecting her first child and whilst she will be greatly missed during her parenting leave, I extend every best wish to Ros and Andrew on this exciting news.

Generosity has been our theme this week and the boys have been left with the following affirmation:

'I am generous. I will look for opportunities to give and share.
There is plenty of time for thoughtfulness. I will
give freely, fully and cheerfully.'

My thought for the week:

'Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.'

Medical information update

We are currently updating our medical files. So as to safeguard your son's wellbeing, especially in the case of an accident, it is imperative that teachers have access to the most recent medical information available. Upon entry into the school you completed a medical form, if there have been subsequent changes that have not been drawn to the teacher's attention, i.e. the onset of diabetes, new allergies, asthma etc. would you please notify the Junior School Office. Please contact your class teacher if you have any queries.

Many thanks

Marcia Bacon

JSPA - Mother's day stall

The Mother's Day Stall held last week was a great success, as evidenced by the delighted little faces of the boys buying for their 'mothers'. The stall was supported by 'Lavender Obsessions' owned by Kaye Balazs and Carmel Parisi of 'Home Max', both Junior School parents.

Last Friday, 172 mothers and grandmothers and 2 special gentlemen attended the JSPA Celebration of Mother's Day at Chapter House, St. Paul's Cathedral. This was a very memorable day. The performing of our boys and three of our Junior School mothers made it a truly wonderful luncheon. Special thanks to Joan Fowles and Catherine Tiernan for their beautiful singing and to Astrida Cooper for her great accompaniment on the piano. The JSPA greatly appreciates the willing assistance from the Junior School Music Department and that of teachers in preparing the boys for their performances.

There are a few tea towels left. If you would like to place a further order, please do so and they will be placed in your son's bags on Friday.

We have another 'FULL HOUSE' !!! The response for the Graham Hyman Lecture 'Understanding your Teenager' on Wednesday, 19 May has been terrific, with over 220 parents indicating attendance. Due to the numbers, the lecture will be held in the Science Lecture Theatre in the Senior School. Please find the attached map showing the location behind the Language Centre, off Morrison Street. Graham will be starting promptly at 7.30 pm so please allow time for parking.

This week we have started the launch of our major function to be held on Friday 4 June.

SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL PARTY

Please watch your letter box for further details and be ready for lots of FUN.

I hope to see many of you at the last Junior School Party for the Millennium!
