21 May 1999 No. 14From the Head of Junior SchoolOn Wednesday evening nearly two hundred parents enjoyed a presentation by Mr Graham Hyman titled 'Understanding Your Teenager.' This seminar provided parents with children of all ages, some practical advice on how to cope in different situations. If you missed the night but would still like to hear Graham's presentation, you may wish to order a copy of the seminar on tape. Details can be obtained from the office. Grandparents' Day for the Prep boys was held today and, once again it was a huge success with approximately eighty visitors mixed with boys and then enjoyed the company of old and new friends over lunch. The boys showed grandparents and special friends their classrooms, some Art and Physical Education activities and the morning concluded with a short concert. Earlier in the week you should have received an invitation to Parent/Teacher Interviews to be held in June. If you missed this invitation, would you please contact the office in order that the scheduling of interviews can be completed. Next week over ninety boys will represent Scotch in Adelaide, as they share in the annual St Peter's College Music Exchange. I wish all boys and staff travelling to Adelaide a safe trip and I look forward to sharing in a part of the exchange when I visit on Tuesday and Wednesday. My theme for this week has been Honesty. Senior School Captain, Tim Downing introduced the theme by sharing a story and a Bible reading. The boys were reminded that honesty involves: saying what you mean and meaning what you say; making promises that you can keep; admitting your mistakes; telling the truth tactfully and being true to yourself by doing what you know is right. The boys were left with the following affirmation: I have no need to impress others or follow the crowd I do what I know is right.' This was followed by words from the Book of Proverbs... My thought for the week comes from the underlying theme throughout Graham Hyman's presentation and is relevant for both parents and children... Guy B Mason German Department: Strings Attached
German/New Zealander, Mr Norbert Hausberg, brought his travelling Puppertheater, 'Strings Attached', to Scotch College on 12 th May. We were treated to the Grimms tale of Rumpelstiltskin, with such great characters as the king and queen, Rumpelstiltskin, the bird, the messenger, the horse and the old man. It was a superb show presented by a really talented performer who makes his own puppets and has a collection of around 90 different characters. The boys had a terrific time and we all sincerely hope he can return next year and perhaps do a show for the whole school.

Electronic Arts PortfolioDuring Term 2, Year 6 boys have been working with Artist in Residence, Ms. Nina Netherway. They have scanned artwork to build stacks for an Electronic Arts Portfolio. All the artwork was completed in Term 1 and was based on Australian poets and artists. The boys studied traditional Australian poets such as Banjo Paterson, Henry Lawson and Dorothy McKellar newer poets such as June Factor and Aboriginal poets, Kath Walker and Eve Johnson. Throughout the year the boys have been looking at the artists from the Heidelberg School and those artists which have interpreted our history in paint. Boys have used a large range of mediums to portray their artistic interpretations of the poems. These works are now being scanned into the computer along with computer graphics executed by some other boys. When the Hyperstudio stacks are complete, the Year 6 boys will recite the poem which accompanies the artwork. It will be a record of his art during 1999 in the Junior School - hence the name, Electronic Arts Portfolio. The National Gallery of Victoria has given permission for Australian art works to be used in the CD-Rom. We plan to have photos of boys standing in front of famous paintings that are relevant to the poetry. The whole project is very exciting and will progress during the term.
