From the Head of Junior School

All Junior School classrooms are now 'on-line' and the world is at the fingertips of each boy through the use of Internet and Email facilities. (Email is currently accessed through the class teacher).

An important aspect of involvement with Internet activities are the issues of security and what type of material boys both access and produce on their own or class web pages. In order to maintain the safety of our boys, the Junior School staff is currently working on a set of guidelines to be followed when using the Internet.

The guidelines will reflect current policy and practice from around Australia and be set to best ensure the personal wellbeing of every boy. I will advise parents of these guidelines once they have been established.

I trust that parents attending this evening's J.S.P.A 'Shake, Rattle and Roll' function enjoy the planned festivities. Stay tuned for a report in next week's Newsletter.

My theme for this week has been Justice.

The boys were reminded that they are practising Justice when they: think for themselves; avoid gossiping and backbiting; refuse to be involved in prejudice by seeing people as individuals; own up to mistakes and accept the consequences; share fairly with others and stand up for people's rights, including their own.

I reminded the boys of the words Luke shared in his Gospel...

'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.'

For the family:

What well-known saying is represented by the letters...

E N T U R Y ?

Written responses can be submitted to me via the office and the FIRST correct response received will earn a 'treat' for each member of the family.

My thought for the week:

In the end, everything works out. If it hasn't worked out yet,
that's because you haven't come to the end.

Art News

Last Friday, Mr Jeff Taylor, a professional cartoonist, visited Scotch College Junior School and worked with the Year 5 boys. He showed the boys how to draw cartoons with simple shapes and then develop them into individual characters. He encouraged boys to use their own ideas, together with the techniques he showed, to give perspective and backgrounds to each cartoon character. Boys completed some excellent work and really enjoyed the sessions.

All classes are working with clay at the moment. Year 6 boys are building slab houses, churches and buildings. These 3D models are quite a challenge to build in clay and the boys are mastering the specific skills of slab clay constructions. Year 5 boys are making cylinders and bowls, while Year 4 boys have made clay tiles and dragons. Year 3 boys have made pinch pots and ponds. Year 2 boys have made a plate of food in clay, which was quite a challenge.

Year 1 boys have made faces and pig 'Babes', while Prep boys have made clay dinosaurs. Strong joins are most important in clay work and boys learn the skill of 'vegemite' joins to ensure that their models do not fall apart. Clay is an exciting 3D medium which encourages creativity, use of texture and the ability to mould a great range of shapes. Most of the models will be fired in the kiln, while Year 5 and 6 boys will glaze some of their models.

Thank you to all parents who have been collecting materials for the Art Room, they are greatly appreciated. Also, to parents who assist in the Prep to Year 3 Art classes, thank you for your support, it is especially helpful to have parent assistance during clay classes, which are always very busy.
