Terry Denton's visit
|
10 June 1999 No. 17From the Head of Junior SchoolOn Wednesday morning I was delighted to have received a phone call from a member of the public who travels daily on the Glen Waverley train into the city. The caller wanted to praise the manners of our Junior School boys and stated that in her experience, our boys were the only independent school children who regularly offered their seats to adults. To conclude with her words, "Well done Scotch!" I have recently observed a number of parents collecting children after school with the family dog. Whilst on most occasions the dog is restrained on a leash, I am concerned that many young children are quite frightened of dogs, regardless of their "nature". Last week I observed two very young children, one in a pusher and the other clinging to a parent, extremely frightened by a large dog that had passed at their level. In the interests of all children, I urge parents to give this matter serious attention. The Milk for Schools programme will be operating again next term and enrolment forms should now have been returned. It has been noted that a number of full milk containers are being discarded around the school and not being drunk as ordered. The staff attempt to monitor this as closely as possible, however, I encourage parents to discuss this matter with their own boy, especially if he no longer wishes to be involved in the programme. I trust that all parents have responded to the opportunity of meeting with class teachers during the Parent/Teacher Interviews scheduled for next week. Whilst every day is a potential Parent/Teacher Interview, formal meetings such as these provide a wonderful opportunity to discuss your son's report and receive additional feedback from specialist staff. The staff have worked tirelessly to prepare reports and Portfolios (P-4) and I know that parents will appreciate the feedback provided. Next Friday afternoon sees the running of the annual House Cross Country at Fairview Park. Spectators are more than welcome to share in this afternoon of competition. Final details were included with last week's Newsletter. Congratulations to Year 3 who produced a wonderful concert on Wednesday. All items were most enjoyable and I extend thanks to the staff involved for the extra time and effort devoted to this activity. A special mention must go to Mrs Beverley Richardson for the many hours of work (and talent) that went into the creation of the most stunning masks! I only had one response to my question from last week. What well-known saying is represented by the lettersÉ E N T U R Y ? The response received from the Haines family was, "To 'C' in the beginning of the new century," and whilst not the response I was after, win the Mars Bars! I was looking for, "Long time, no see (C)!" A great try by the Haines'! I hope all families enjoy the extended weekend.

Terry Denton's visit to the Year 4 classes.By Derrick Tsang, Tom Gin, Alastair Meallin and Alexander Tallent 4W On Thursday 3 June, Terry Denton a well known author/illustrator came to visit the Year 4 classes. He has goldish brown, curly hair and he was very tall. Terry was very funny and said lots of jokes, which made us laugh. He talked about his books "Gasp!, Splat! And Zapt!". He showed us how he first sketches with pencil. Then he uses black ink for the outline and adds water colour paints. He then take the sample book to his publishers. Many times he changes his colours and designs after seeing the publisher. Terry showed us how to sketch characters and how to make pictures look 3-dimensional. We made lots of fun pictures like a cat tying a dog onto a railroad track. In the next picture the train just missed the dog, but the cat had one paw hurt by the train. We also drew monkeys from many different angles. At the end of the session he drew a picture of Mrs. Wyatt (what she will look like in a few years time) to trick her. Forthcoming Dates
All forms and money need to be sent to school and placed in the box at the office by Tuesday 15 June. Boys will need to stop reading on Friday 11 June, as this is when the readathon ends. Thank you,
Emily Taylor
FootballThe Year 5 & 6 football session on 22 June will run from 3.25 - 5.15. Good luck to Phillipe Gyles and Tylah Breese who play for Victoria in Rugby over the weekend and Andrew Earle who runs in the Cross Country Championships
