18 June 1999 No. 18From the Head of Junior SchoolFor the boys of the Upper Primary, the past couple of weeks have provided opportunities to foster House spirit whilst competing in the annual Trivial Pursuit competition. All boys prepared for this activity in individual House groups and representatives from each House were then chosen to form a team. Over two Wednesday mornings, a series of 'mind stretchers' challenged each team, with points being awarded for correct responses. At the end of the competition, Campbell House was declared the winner, with Bradshaw, Waller and Healey following closely behind. Congratulations are extended to the Campbell House team of: Nathan Su, Mark Chan, Andrew Wheeler, Cameron Haines, Thomas Strong, Jonothan Kachab, Philippe Gyles and Christopher Sia. Today, the annual House Cross Country was held and whilst at the time of writing the results were unknown, I am sure all boys enjoyed this exciting event. Full results will be published next week. Congratulations to the P-2 boys who participated in their final Chapel for the term. Thanks are also extended to the many parents and friends who were able to share in this service of worship. Next week is also set to be an extremely busy one. Years Five and Six are in the final preparations for their mid year concert, which is to be held on Thursday afternoon at 2.00 pm. All are welcome to share in what is set to be a wonderful afternoon's entertainment. It is also "Mission Week" across the school and as a part of this important week, the Junior School will welcome Mr Colin Buchanan ('Playschool' and renown musician) on Monday and Tuesday. Colin will share with the boys his musical talents, his Christian beliefs and will most certainly provide a valuable contribution to this important facet of our school. This is the first time the Junior School has participated in Mission Week and I encourage the prayers of the whole community for a fulfilling week. Thank you to the parents who have responded to our request that all boys be at school by 8.20 am each morning. There has been a noticeable reduction in the number of latecomers and classes are generally able to commence on time, with little disruption. However, it is of a concern that a number of boys are being left at school well before 8.00 am, especially at this time of the year when the mornings are so brisk! Parents are reminded that playground supervision begins at 8.00 am and that teachers may not necessarily be in classrooms to, allow boys to wait inside. I encourage parents to give this matter consideration so that we can provide every boy the safest and most comfortable arrangements available. I remind parents that Term Two concludes at normal time next Friday and that the regular timetable operates until that time. Thank you to all those parents who were able to participate in our Parent/Teacher Interviews, I trust the information given provided positive feedback on your son's progress. The interview process concludes on Monday afternoon and any reports not collected will be posted before the end of term. With the interviews fresh in all of our minds, I leave you with my thought for the week...
Guy B Mason From the Resource CentreWorld Book OnlineWe have just subscribed to a very new resource: World Book Online. This provides students with access to the encyclopedia on computers in their classrooms, and to all the computers in the Resource Centre. It is not just a multimedia encyclopedia. Boys may visit relaxed web sites or retrieve relevant current articles from various publications. It is continually updated, and a "Behind the Headlines" feature gives a summary of current news events. Audio and video facilities are included. It is simple and easy to use, with accessible text. We know that this is a relevant and purposeful resource which students will be able to utilise in a variety of situations. Ms A Hindson From the PE DepartmentApologies for my overlooking of Angus Brougham (5A) in last weeks newsletter. Angus ran in the VPSSA Cross Country Championship in the 12/13 year age group and Andrew Earle (4D) in the 10 year age group. Tylah Breese (6I) and Philippe Gyles (6I) were part of the victorious Victorian Rugby union team at the National Championships. Congratulations boys. Year 5 and 6 boys have one more week of football, volley stars, netball and cross country before starting Term 3 sports - hockey, soccer and basketball. Training will be afterschool - Mondays Year 6 and Tuesdays Year 5. A reminder that Year 5 and 6 footballers have a special training session on Tuesday 22nd June, this will be followed by a sausage sizzle, which will be supplied by the 1858 club. Written by Grade 2M Boys Cross Age Science - Grade 3N and Year 7On Wednesday, 9 June, Grade 3N went down to the Senior School to meet with our Cross Age buddies. When we got there we split up into two groups. My group went into Science Lab 2 with Mr. Peterson and the other group went into Science Lab 1 with Ms Scarff. We found our partners and then we were told about the rules and safety. We got our safety gear on (goggles and aprons) and collected the equipment. We then got the bunsen burner going to a heating flame, which was blue. Next step was to heat the tube and see what happened. The copper sulphate in the tube started to turn blue and bubbled. Moisture came out and turned to steam and the copper sulphate turned white. We talked to our buddies about what was happening. After that there was a little worksheet to do. Some boys turned their copper sulphate blue again by adding water. Overall it was great fun to go and do experiments with bunsen burners and I hope we can go to the Science labs again. We would all like to thank the Year 7 boys and their teachers for the wonderful science lesson. Declan Smith 3N TUCKSHOP - Friday Pasta Special - Spaghetti Bolognaise - $2.20 Junior SchoolTerm 2 finishes on Friday 25 June at normal finishing times. Boys return to School for the start of Term 3 on Tuesday 13 July. Year 2 Mathematics. The Term Two "Hands on Mathematics" programme has been a great success. The enthusiasm displayed by the boys during these sessions has been fantastic. Their interest in the everyday activities has seen the continued development of their maths concepts and knowledge. This programme would not have been possible without the fantastic support of a keen group of parents, including Mrs Lamont-Stacey, Dr Peters, Mrs King, Ms Lyons, Mrs Wormald, Mrs Lym, Mrs Yu, Mrs Balazs, Mr Carmichael, Mrs Tham and Mrs Watson. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their valued support and look forward to their continued assistance. The Year Two staff intend to run a similar programme during Term Three and would be thrilled to have some additional parent helpers. It would be ideal if you could commit yourself regularly to an 11.00 am to 12.00 noon timeslot, on each Day 3. The dates for the programme are 16 and 26 July, 3, 11, 19 and 27 August and 6 September.
