From the Head of Junior School

A very warm welcome back to all families and especially to the boys as they start the Third Term of the year. A very special welcome is extended to new members of the Scotch family.

I trust that all families enjoyed a refreshing vacation and that all boys are ready for what is set to be, an even busier time ahead.

A special welcome is extended to Miss Belinda Colaneri, who joins the Physical Education Department whilst Mrs Edmanson is on leave, and to Mr Gavin Marshall, who will be working across the Junior School covering classes for Mr Carson and Mr Sampson.

I know that both Belinda and Gavin will make wonderful contributions to the Junior School and I wish them both well for their time with us.

I remind parents that Mr Carson is currently on leave and that Mr Sampson is Acting Deputy Head for Third Term.

Congratulations are extended to Mr Matthew Dickinson and his wife, Jane, on the safe arrival of their first child, Emma. We welcome Emma to the Scotch family and wish Matt and Jane every happiness with their most treasured possession!

At the last Assembly of Term Two, I was pleased to present Form Captain Badges to the following boys:

Grade 3M

Grade 3N

Grade 4L

I wish each boy a successful term in this role.

I mentioned in my last Newsletter that Mission Week was a wonderful conclusion to Term Two. Colin Buchanan had a meaningful impact on the boys and I have heard some wonderful comments from them on Colin's visit. It was pleasing to note that so many boys had reflected on Colin's visit over the vacation period. (Some even saw him on Playschool!)

My thought for the week is taken from one of Colin's popular songs:

'My God is so BIG! So strong and so mighty
There's nothing my God cannot do.
THAT'S TRUE!'

From the Junior Primary Department

Welcome to Term 3. I trust that you all had an enjoyable and refreshing break! Most boys have quickly settled into their routines and are getting on with the business of learning. It is a delight to witness their positive, enthusiastic and energetic approach to school. Visitors to the Junior Primary playground will have noticed the works going on behind the boarding house. Very soon this area will be transformed into a wonderful new playground for Prep to Year 2 boys. Climbing equipment, a sandpit, tunnels, an amphitheatre and grassed areas are all planned. We thank the JSPA and the School Council for their very generous funding of this project and Mr Ashley Miller and his grounds staff for all their dedicated hard work.

Last Term we asked that parents work with their boys to overcome the problem of persistent late arrival at school. Thank you to all those families who responded so positively to this request. This week I spoke to the Junior Primary boys about being properly prepared for each of their daily activities: i.e, having a complete P.E. uniform, an art smock and library books for the relevant days. To date, some boys have been unable to fully participate in specialist activities because they have not had the appropriate equipment or clothing. Whilst it would be easy to make the rule "No gear, no participation", I am aware that sometimes these items are genuinely forgotten and also that some boys may use not having their equipment as an excuse to sit out of activities which they do not particularly enjoy. Specialist lessons are an important and integral part of the curriculum and just as we expect the boys to be prepared for and to participate fully in Maths and English, then we expect them to be prepared for and to participate fully in P.E., Art, etc. I have left the boys with the task of deciding on appropriate consequences for arriving at lessons without the necessary equipment. I await their suggestions. Parent discussion of this matter with their sons would be most appreciated.

The Junior Primary teachers are already looking forward to Term 4 and the much enjoyed Junior School Christmas Service. Mrs Richardson is in the process of checking and refurbishing our wardrobe. Many of the costumes are showing the signs of wear and need replacing. We would be most appreciative of any donations of fabrics, particularly luxurious, decorative fabrics and beading, sparkles, etc. to be transformed into robes and head gear for the wisemen. We are also searching for sewers, washers and ironers who can help restore the costumes. If you can help in any way, please see either Mrs Richardson or Mrs Robertson in the Junior Primary Department

Finally, the Access Unit would like your empty, clean one litre milk cartons. Please pass these onto Mrs Robertson, also.

Many thanks,

Chris Robertson
Director of Junior Primary
