From the Head of Junior School

In last week's Newsletter, I mentioned that the Camp Quality Puppets visited the Junior School and presented puppet shows informing the boys about "Cancer in Children". This was most informative and I hope that parents have had an opportunity to follow this up in their own homes.

As a part of the day, our invitation for boys to attend school in casual clothes raised over $700.00 for Camp Quality and I extend thanks to all boys for their generosity.

Last Friday the Year 4 boys participated in their first interschool sports fixture. Football, soccer and hockey games were played against Grimwade, at Scotch. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was had by all and congratulations to the boys on the skills and fine sportsmanship which were displayed.

Today, the P-2 boys enjoyed their annual Footy Day. A sea of colour involving jumpers representing every AFL team saw future champions give everything to this exciting day.

Special thanks are extended to the staff who organised and ran this popular day in the life of a young Scotch Collegian.

Last week my theme was Kindness and the boys were encouraged to practise random acts of kindness towards others. I trust that families experienced some of these acts at home, and it is my hope that this attitude will continue through every day in the lives of our boys.

This week, my theme has been Caring and this follows on nicely from last week. The boys were reminded that Caring involves giving attention to the people and things that you love; that you care about people and you say and do things to help them; that you do a careful job giving everything your best effort; and that, when you care for someone, you recognise how they feel and what they need.

Our weekly sheet contained the following affirmation:

I care for others and myself. I pay attention to the needs of people and
animals. I give my best to every job.

My thought for the week was passed on to me by Mrs Ferres and speaks about the ultimate level of care displayed to each one of us:

God holds us in the palm of His hand and calls us by name...
Others hold us by the scruff of the neck and call us names!

From the JSPA

All who attended last Friday's Trivia Night should have had a funfilled evening! Some amazing dancing was witnessed and fabulous prizes were won and bought. I would like to thank everyone who donated prizes and the Scotch families that helped to fill the great hampers. It was a terrific night with a grade 6 table winning the quiz and receiving a dinner cooked and served by the committee at my home.

Please find with this news sheet the flyer for the Father's Day Breakfast. I know many have been asking about this event. Please get your replies in early to help with the organisation of this lovely breakfast for fathers and sons. Also for the girls don't forget the film and luncheon on the 31 August. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Art News

Earlier this week the Year 4 Boys had a special visitor in the Art Room. Mrs Diane Keating was the Artist in Residence teaching the boys sketching and drawing. Mrs Keating has recently had her portrait of the children's writer, Hazel Edwards, featured in the local newspaper.

The boys and Mrs Keating have been sketching major buildings around Scotch College Senior School learning how to sketch something that they see. Adding details and obtaining a sense of depth will be focussed on in the future. A selection of Yr 4 sketches are on show in the office foyer).

Clay models are being fired in the kilns regularly and many have been returned to the boys over the past weeks. Models of animals and dinosaurs look great in a garden setting and after a time they become green with age and blend into the garden. At present there is a display of clay houses, churches and castles made by Year 6 boys in the Junior School Office foyer. These models are made from the slab construction method and have taken the boys a number of weeks to construct. Please take a moment to call in and see this excellent display.

Thank you to all parents who have collected items for the Art Room over the past weeks. I am collecting plastic bags, panti-hose and plastic containers at present.

Preps: Trees

Our Prep boys are thinking about the question, "What Do Trees Mean to Us?"

  1. What are the different types of tress - in our gardens, in the park and in the school grounds?
  2. What are the parts of a tree?
  3. What lives in our trees?
  4. Why are trees so important to living things?
  5. What things cause harm to our trees?
  6. How can we care for our trees?

Year 1: Toys

The Year 1 boys will be able to answer these questions at the end of their unit on toys.

What forces act on toys to make them move?

  1. How can toys be described?
  2. Why are toys made out of particular materials?
  3. Have the types of toys we play with changed?

Year 2:Energy

Year 2 are learning about energy.

  1. Why do we need energy?
  2. Why should we conserve energy?
  3. What is energy?
  4. What is sound?
  5. What is light?
  6. What is heat?
  7. What is magnetism?

Year 3: Time and Change

Boys in Year 3 are studying time and change during Term 3.

  1. What causes change?
  2. How does time effect change?
  3. What effect does change have on society?
  4. What effects does change have on the environment?
  5. What effect does change have on things around us?
  6. Are all changes for the better?

Year 4: Melbourne

  1. What is a city?
  2. How does a city begin, grow, change and what are the effects?
  3. Why do people live in the city?
  4. Who are city workers?
  5. How do they depend on other workers?
  6. How are people and things moved to and around a city?

Year 5: Early Australia

A Year 5 unit called "Early Australia: European Settlement and Exploration" will discuss the following questions.

  1. What was Australian life like for the early white settlers?
  2. What was life like for the early explorers?
  3. Why did white people come to Australia?
  4. What problems did they face on the voyage?
  5. What sort of people made up Australia's first white population?
  6. What were some of the problems confronting the early white settlers?

Year 6: Government

All Year 6 boys are focussing on Government and the environment this term. They are developing these understandings.

  • The three levels of government are constantly making decisions which affect our everyday lives.
  • Everyone has the opportunity to be involved in and to influence the decision making process in a democratic society.
  • Various internal and external influences affect the lives of all people in the community.
  • There will be costs and benefits to the community and to different people in any decision made by the Government.
  • Co-operation is essential in decision making; we must be prepared to listen, understand and respect others' reasons for their decisions, and question and respond in an appropriate manner.
