G B Mason

From the Head of Junior School

This week saw the annual Year Three to Six House Public Speaking Competition. All boys prepared speeches and presented them at House Meetings, with Year Level finalists being chosen to represent each House.

I was very impressed with the quality of speeches presented and I congratulate all boys on their efforts.

Special congratulations are extended to Jack Naughton (Healey, Y3), Stuart Watson (Campbell, Y4), Chris Robson (Waller, Y5) and Angus Tyers (Campbell, Y6)/Michael Katz (Healey, Y6) who were judged winners on the day.

Other finalists were;

Y3 - Martin Fairservice (Bradshaw), Timothy Mursell (Campbell) and Edward Keating (Waller)

Y4 - Alistair Meallin (Bradsaw), Aria Lokon (Healey) and Andrew Yuen (Waller)

Y5 - Andrew Fairservice (Bradshaw), Colin Kiel (Campbell) and Thomas Naughton (Healey)

Y6 - Hamish Lockwood (Waller)

Final Points: Healey - 12; Waller - 11; Campbell - 10; Bradshaw - 8.

Thanks are extended to Mrs Catherine Tiernan who worked closely with all finalists, as they applied the finishing touches to their speeches.

Yesterday, P-2 enjoyed a wonderful Chapel service following the theme of "Peace". Thanks are extended to Mrs Robertson, the staff and boys who participated in this meaningful service. It was great to see the Senior and Junior School Captains, Tim Downing and Alistair Watson, playing such an important role in this service of worship.

Today, I had the pleasure of welcoming the Federal Executive of the Junior School Heads' Association of Australia (J.S.H.A.A.) to Scotch. Colleagues from around Australia met with our staff, toured the school and then held their quarterly meeting in the Ramsay Room. It is exciting to be able to share the various programmes and activities of the school with colleagues and to have the opportunity to receive welcomed feedback.

Next week is a very important week in the life of the school as we celebrate "Foundation Day". As in the past, Years Three to Six will join with Senior School in a special Assembly to be held in the Memorial Hall on Friday. Foundation Day is completed with the annual Foundation Day Concert at the Victorian Concert Hall and is once again set to be a wonderful night of entertainment.

I look forward to the Junior School involvement in the concert and wish our Choir every success as they represent us.

Once again we have had a huge response to our Fathers' Day breakfasts. So much so, that an extra morning has been scheduled and already this is filling up quickly. I wish all the dads that are able to join us, a special morning with their sons and express thanks, in anticipation, to the J.S.P.A. for all their hard work in preparing what has become one of the most popular social events in the Junior School. Have a great breakfast, dads!

My theme this week has been Consideration and I encouraged boys to think more carefully about others and the things we say and do. I again, reminded the boys of the 'Golden Rule' -

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

My thought for the week:

Today is the tomorrow you were worried about yesterday. Was it worth it?

Book Week Reviews

Boys have attended a number of Book Week activities this week, and we have included a few reviews of these events:-

Andy Griffiths Visit

On the 24th of August 1999, author Andy Griffiths, writer of the popular "Just" book series, visited and entertained the Year Five and Six boys of Scotch College. Mr Griffiths displayed a phenomenal amount of humour with rather enlightening ideas on how to annoy your parents, your brothers or sisters, and of course, your teachers.

Andy's stories actually reflect his own childhood in the many short stories that are in the books that he writes. Andy started his writing career with a book with instructions on how to perform classic practical jokes. His next book, "Swinging on the Clothesline", inspired him to write his best-selling books "Just Tricking", "Just Annoying" and "Just Stupid". One of the main reasons why Andy's books sell so well is that you get a free $1,000 with every purchase (JUST TRICKING!). Andy uses a strange strategy when writing. He writes the opposite of what the reader would anticipate. This makes his stories very funny. After Andy's presentation, all of Year 5 queued up to get Andy Griffith's autograph.

Elizabeth Honey Visit

This week is Book Week. On Tuesday, Elizabeth Honey visited the Assembly hall to talk to all the Year 4 boys. WOW! She is really a great author and illustrator. I've never seen any person like that before.

I was excited when I reached the hall because I have read some of her books and was keen to meet her in person. She had short hair down to her neck and a kind face. This was Elizabeth Honey. She wrote her schedule on the white board and told us about what she was going to do.

Mrs Honey began by talking about her background and how she became a writer. I thought she was only a writer but I was wrong because she is a wonderful illustrator as well. When she was our age she was very good at drawing. After she finished school she went to art school and that is where she concentrated on drawing. She also wanted to become a writer. Now Mrs Honey has written many interesting books and illustrated some of these as well.

Year 2 Excursion to Science Works

On Wednesday 18 August, Grade 2 went to Science Works. When we arrived we went to Sports Works. My favourite part was racing against somebody else on the oars. After recess we went to the Light and Colour Show. We learnt that the eye can only see three colours. It can only see red, green and blue, but it mixes them together to see all colours. My favourite bit was when she lifted the cardboard from the roof and we saw the colours on the graph. Just after lunch we went to Cool Stuff. We found out about liquid nitrogen. My favourite part was when she made the bubbles by mixing washing detergent and liquid nitrogen. At about 1 o'clock it was free time in our groups. I was with Mrs Qi. The first place I went to was Nitty Gritty Super City. After all the excitement it was time to go back to school.

On Wednesday 2C and 2M went to Science Works. When we got there we went to Sport Works. We had recess. After recess we went to the Colour and Light Show. Then we had lunch. After lunch we went to Cool Stuff at Cool Stuff. A girl called Genevieve showed us bubbles and a balloon trick. When the show had finished we had free time. My favourite part was when I went into the mirror maze. When free time was up we went down the stairs. Then we went back on the bus.

On Wednesday Grade 2 went to Science Works. When we got there we went to Sports Works. Then after recess we went to the Light and Colour Show. It was about light and colour. Then we went to a show called Cool Stuff. It was mostly about ice. The girl put a rubber ball into cold water. The water was 196 degrees. The rubber ball was solid when the girl smashed the rubber with a hammer, the rubber ball smashed into pieces. After seven minutes, the rubber ball became rubber again. Then after lunch we got an hour free time and went everywhere we liked.

Last Wednesday Grade 2 went to Science Works. We split into 2 groups and went to Sports Works. My favourite sport was rowing because it was a simulator. The wheel chair race was also a simulator. We saw the Colour and Light Show after recess. Straight after the show was lunch. Our lunch play was very short but very fun. We had the same host for Cool Stuff. Cool Stuff was about liquid nitrogen. They did all kinds of crazy stuff with the nitrogen. After the show we had free time. After that we went back.
