3 September 1999 No. 27From the Head of Junior SchoolIt is hard to believe that as I write this article, we head into the last week of Term Three. It seems like only yesterday that we welcomed new families to Scotch and here we are now, confronted by an extremely busy and hectic last term. Hold on tight! I remind parents that Term Three concludes next Thursday (9 September) at normal dismissal times. This then, will be the last Newsletter for the term. The staff will use the following day for professional development and this year our focus is to be on the Key Learning Area of Science. When Term Four commences, on Monday 4 October, boys are permitted to wear Winter or Summer uniforms during the first week, after which Summer uniform is required. Winter uniforms should not be put too far away as boys will still need these on formal occasions such as concerts and Speech Night (Y3 to 6 only). I encourage parents to consult the 'red calendar' in order that any dry cleaning necessary is completed well in advance of 'formal' school commitments. If parents have not entered 'Junior School Family Day' into the family diary, I encourage them to do so. Saturday 16 October is considered a compulsory day of attendance for boys and as such, further details will be distributed at the start of next term. This is always a wonderful family day and one definitely not to be missed! Special congratulations are extended to Christopher Robson (Y5) who was successful in winning the Year 5 section at the annual Victorian Association of German Teachers' Poetry competition. Chris presented his poem with 23 other children from around Victoria. Well done, Chris!! Our Interschool Ski team competed at Mt Buller last weekend and a complete report from Ms Pride can be found elsewhere in this Newsletter. However, I congratulate the team of 31 boys on combining well as a team to win the overall cup for the Boys' Schools section - a great achievement in what I believe were extremely trying conditions. Special thanks are extended to Ms Pride, Miss Carney and Mr Paul Choiselat for their efforts in preparing and assisting the boys. On Wednesday of this week, several Year Two and Three boys represented the school at the "Victorian Chess Association Inc. Year 3 Teams Competition (Brighton Zone)". The boys were very excited when they proudly presented me with the "Premiers" banner and showed off their new gold medals! Congratulations and a huge well done to Anders Huitfeldt (2C), Nicholas Inge (2C), Christopher Tham (2C), Derek Yu (2C), Lincoln McPhee (3N) and Matthew Pierri (3M) on this wonderful team effort. Next week, we farewell Mr Gavin Marshall who has worked across all year levels throughout the term. Mr Marshall has once again had a tremendous impact on the lives of so many boys and I sincerely thank him for all of his efforts. Miss Christine Carney will spend next week on exchange at Pembroke School in South Australia. Scotch will welcome Mr Tim Edmonds to Year 2 and we look forward the contribution that he will make, albeit for such a short time. This week our focus has been on Fathers' Day. The JSPA once again held a series of breakfasts for dads and special friends in the Cardinal Pavilion, with over 240 special males in attendance. This was a tremendous response to a wonderful idea and I extend sincere thanks to Mrs Bronwyn Cramond, Mrs Chris Garde and the other JSPA Committee members who helped in the organisation of each breakfast. My thought for the week is a poem that Bronwyn read to those dads in attendance and I share it for all those who were unable to join us for breakfast throughout the week. It's Father's Day, Father's Day, Guy B Mason From The JspaThe JSPA has had a very busy week! On Tuesday over 60 ladies enjoyed the film 'Tea With Mussolini' and a basket lunch at the Balwyn Cinema. This was followed by three Father's Day Breakfasts at which approximately 500 breakfasts were served. The JSPA were delighted with the response to this non-fund raising event that has evolved to broaden the sense of the "Scotch Family" within our community. We hope that all the fathers and sons enjoyed their time together. Special thanks to Chris Garde who co-ordinated both functions and to our 'Walker' helpers.
Please can you help?On Tuesday 7 September (next Tuesday) we are having a working-bee in the Ramsay Room at 1.30 pm to make the Christmas Program Costumes. Could anyone who can sew (including Grandmas) come and help? We also need someone to make the coffee! Help spread the work load an assist in having our little angels looking beautiful. If you have a sewing machine and could bring it to school please contact Bronwyn Cramond.Thank you to those who have offered their help with Sports Day. This is a very important day for our boys and your help is greatly valued.

Book Week AssembliesThe culmination of our Book Week celebrations involved boys and teachers from each year level reporting on a short-listed title, from the Younger Readers' section, at an assembly. We heard a number of reports involving the plot theme and issues arising in the books. We also saw a variety of impressive activities that had been completed in classrooms. This was a wonderful opportunity for students and teachers to share their impressions of differing types of books. Thank you to all who participated.

Ski Team Sizzles the SlopesSkiing is all about weather conditions. Even rain, wind and poor visibility didn't deter a very enthusiastic group of 29 Scotch boys who represented the school last week at the Inter-school Skiing Championships held at Mt Buller. Hundreds of competitors competed from schools all over Victoria and the Inter-schools is the largest ski event in the Southern Hemisphere. All the boys performed exceptionally well and we managed to win the Boy's Primary Division Cup. Several outstanding individual performances added to our overall success. Watkin McLennan won the silver medal in the Alpine event with a staggering time of 57.36 which was just 0.12 seconds off the winning time. In addition to this, fine performances from Jonathon Choiselat (12th), Sam Henderson (16th) and Henry Curtis (40th) enabled our A team to win the silver medal in the team's event. Personal best performances were also achieved by many of our boys, particularly Angus Brougham, Lyndon Neville, Andrew Earle and Mark Gronow. In the Moguls event Jonathon Choiselat won an individual bronze medal with a superb display of skiing over the bumps and together with his team members, Watkin McLennan (5th) and Sam Henderson (11th) they took out the silver medal in the team's event. Snowboarding is a rapidly growing sport and Sam Henderson, Andrew Mursell and Mark Gronow did an excellent job of representing the school on a very tricky rain affected course. Our A team (Alpine and Moguls) have been invited to represent Victoria in the Australian Championships to be held at Perisher Valley next weekend. We wish then all the best for a safe and successful journey interstate. A special thank you to the following parents who acted as officials throughout the Championships: John Curtis, Ken McAllister, Debby Gronow, Julie Henderson and Lynette and Paul Choiselat.
